October 2012 Newsletter
Volume 42, Number 2
September, 2012
Fall Meeting, October 21 & 22, 2012
Holiday Inn, Harrisburg (Grantville), PA
I
Bob Hancock, President
t’s late August as I prepare my final message as president of our Association. We’re having a very busy
time here at our studio. My job as president was easier than the previous leaders who came before me,
and having only 2 meetings has made a difference. I am looking forward to completing my year. I find
myself worried, but not discouraged, about my profession and livelihood, as a Professional Photographer and business owner. After several down years, our business is doing well again this year. We have experienced some big sales in Pennsylvania Art, and Our Sports and Special events are doing well.
As far as our Association, things have definitely changed! Digital Technology is changing not only
the way we operate our business, its changing our Associations. People have vast amounts of information
available 24 hours a day on the Internet. Many do not see the need to belong to professional groups like ours.
Memberships in most state associations are declining. However, I am happy to report, we had many renewals
and new members for this year. Belonging to the State Associations keeps you in personal contact with our industry. So, please
make sure to renew your membership for 2013.
We have made arrangements for some great talent in October, Kirk Volclain will be our main speaker, along with Llew
Wentzel. Kirk will be talking about Seniors, and Llew will be talking about sports and school photography. Both are great photographers, and great teachers. Kirk's program is scheduled for all day Monday, and Llew’s, for Sunday afternoon. I will also provide a
short program on Sunday, about Landscape photography and the simple use of NIk Filters. I will share some of my secrets
about how we are selling our Art images, using Facebook as our primary way of marketing. It will be fun and entertaining.
Bob Hancock, PPA of Pennsylvania President; Master Photographer, Photographic Craftsman
Ron Bookwalter, First Vice-President
For those of you who are new or just forgot, I had already served as President in 2005 when our
meetings were held at the Radisson Penn Harris in Camp Hill, PA. I have accepted a request to complete the
remaining term of John Hanneman who resigned and would have been our 2013 President. I have been
working closely this year with our current President, Bob Hancock, to make his year as successful as possible
and also to plan ahead for another exciting year in 2013. Past-President Rodney Clark M.Photog.,Cr.,CPP
has graciously agreed to serve as Convention chairman to make sure that our members not only have access
to some of the best photographic talent available but also to explore some new and different meeting venues
that offer some wonderful opportunities for our members. Right now a lot of different ideas are on the
board and I will keep everyone informed of what we have in mind later this year.
Both our annual Convention and the October 2013 meetings will be held at The Comfort Suites in downtown Carlisle, PA.
The 2013 Convention is set for April 14-16 2013 and the October meeting will be October 13-14 2013. Mark you calendars now!
The Comfort Suites is in the heart of the Carlisle historic district with easy access to scores of boutique shops and eateries.
Carlisle is also the county seat for Cumberland County and the old historic courthouse is only a few yards from our hotel. You can
even check out where Confederate cannonballs took pieces out of the columns of the old courthouse! I can assure you that the cannons will be silent when we are there! Downtown Carlisle also abounds in many fine dining establishments within short walking
distance from the Comfort Suites. The hotel has it’s own restaurant, The Gaslight Grille, and a full breakfast as well as free parking
next to the hotel are included in our room fee. You can check out the hotel amenities at:http://www.comfortsuitescarlisle.com
Please spread the word about all of the new and exciting things coming to PPA of PA both this year and next. We have
membership categories to suit photographers at any level who want to learn and improve the quality of our profession. Looking forward to seeing everyone again in October in Grantville! Respectfully, Ron Bookwalter

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2012 CONVENTION
PRINT COMPETITION
TERRY BLAIN SWEEPS THE AWARDS
Terry Blain won multiple awards at the 2012 Convention of the Professional Photographers Association of
Pennsylvania in State College last March. She won
both the Best of Show Trophy and the Imagemaker of
the Year. She was awarded a place in the Club of Excellence for her four blue ribbon prints in her case. Her
image titled “Village Smithy” won both a Kodak Gallery Award, and a LexJet Sunset Award, as well as Best
Portrait of a Man Trophy sponsored by B&S Picture
Frames. Her image, “A Lover’s Lament,” won the Portrait of a Woman Trophy
sponsored by More Photos, as well as a Judges’ Choice Gallery Award.
Cindy Howard Honored with The National Award
It took some time before Cindy Howard realized that they
were actually talking about HER! The narrative always
starts with an acknowledgement of the recipient’s background, character, and service to the organization and
industry. Cindy was first moved to tears, and became
delighted as the realization dawned on her that all those
nice things were being said of herself. The moment was
all the more sweet when her family walked in the door as
a surprise. Esther Beitzel couldn’t have presented the
award to a more deserving candidate.
Congratulations, Cindy!

lew Wenzel
Llew was first introduced to photography by his grandfather at a young age. He spent
many hours working together with his grandfather in the darkroom his grandfather had
built.
Llew started photographing weddings at the age of 14 and worked out of his home doing weddings until 1995 when his dream of opening a full time studio was realized.
The first studio was located on Main Street in Hughesville, but that space was quickly
out grown. The current studio is located on Penn Street in Muncy and continues to
grow and grow.
Llew travels around the US & Canada teaching other photographers. He has won numerous state, national &
international print competitions.
The studio staff currently consists of Llew, doing most of the photography, and his wife Tracy is the face of the
studio.
Volume Production: Templates, Green
Screens, and Actions
Llew’s program will focus on how to systematize all aspects of the volume photography business. He will talk
about how he adopted green screen technology, created
custom backdrops, and created actions to save time doing
putting it all together.
Come to the program with your questions and you will
come away with an up-to-date experience from a working
professional who is doing it all.

BECOME THE COOLEST STUDIO IN TOWN FOR SENIOR PORTRAITS
Inn Grantville
With Kirk Voclain! Monday October 22, 2012 Holiday
Grantville, Pa 17028
T
his program centers on COOLNESS, or popularity, in (717) 469-0661
the eyes of your seniors. Yes, seniors have an opinion,
and if they don't think your studio is the COOLEST, then forget it, they won't
come to you. This ain't your Momma's senior portraits. Get ready to learn, laugh,
and love taking senior portraits. Kirk will
show you all of his secrets to getting that
$2000 average. The senior will love you,
and the parents will pay handsomely for the work.
This program will help you look at your studio and your studio operations through the eyes of a 17 year old. It will show you some new
posing, backgrounds, and marketing ideas. This program will help you
open up your mind to look at things in a new way, a bizarro, backwards way of thinking that will have you running to the bank!
Kirk has a motivational style of speaking that will keep
you on the edge of your seat. He is a very competent speaker who has
won several awards for this teaching and speaking. His style of delivery is both easy to understand and enthusiastic. You will not be disappointed!!This is a fast paced, motivational program using slides and
audience participation. This is a must see program for all who photograph seniors or
young people.
Kirk Voclain was
born on July 4,
1962. His love for photography began at just 8 years old when he got
his first camera by saving box tops from a popular breakfast cereal. He
photographed his first wedding professionally at the age of only 15,
and charged only $100. He learned the technical aspects of photography, marketing, and business by managing a camera store for 9
years.
He married his lovely wife Tammy on February 28, 1987, and opened
Kirk Voclain Photography in April 1987. He then quickly grew into
the areas’ most creative and innovative photographer. He became a
member of the PPA in 1988 and has hung photographs in both national, state, and regional competitions every year since. He has received countless awards, including Photographer of the Year 1995, Best of Show/Masters Division, Best
CPP entry, numerous Fuji Masterpiece Award, etc. He has also
received numerous blue ribbons and distinguished print honors.
He has had several photographs accepted into the Disney World
Kodak EPCOT exhibit. His work has been published in PPA affiliate magazines and nationally in the Professional Photographer
Magazine. He received his Certified Professional Photographer status in 1990, his Masters Degree in 1994, and his Craftsman's Degree in
1995. 2 weeks after his Masters Degree, he received his greatest award to date, his daughter
Scarlett.
