Title in original language Rewolucja na szynach - Dostosowanie taboru Tramwajów Warszawskich do potrzeb osób niepełnosprawnych Title in English Revolution on rails - Adaptation of tram rolling stock to disabled people's needs Location Warsaw, Poland Year 2008 - 2013 Initiator City President of Warsaw & Warsaw Trams Developed by (one pick only) Administration / Political actor Operator Implementation Area City Urban Supported accessibility level Macro accessibility Micro accessibility Elements of the working process Preconditions User needs Current state Elements of the working process Policy Policy on paper Elements of the working process Strategy Programme / Plan Partnerships People Budget Elements of the working process Implementation Supportive measures Accessibility measures and accessibility planning Type of PRM Affected Visual impaired Motor impaired Hearing impaired Cognitive / Learning impaired Application Field / Target area - Public Transport - Tram Service Vehicle Stops / stations Information Why is it a good practice example? This example enables people with reduced mobility of different kinds to move around the city without restraints at specified times (special information at tram stops regarding timetable of low-floor trams) and on different lines eventually covering the whole tram network of Warsaw. Background and Objectives / Aims The project began in 2008 (although before this there were also low-floor trams operating on theWarsaw network) after a few years of discussions with the city authorities regarding new and modern tram rolling stock. However, only the signing of a long-term agreement with the President of Warsaw by Warsaw Trams has assured a stable financing source for the investments. Therefore, Warsaw Trams has started a project which aim is to equip the city of Warsaw with 186 modern low-floor trams (made by PESA) fully adapted to PRMs' needs. The project aims to exchange 40% of the existing tram rolling stock and also to withdraw the oldest ones from the network. Implementation The project is ongoing until 2013. There was a special information day with the (incl. obstacles, participation of city authorities and also with the possibility to ride the new trams, to which public participation) people representing PRM organisations were invited. The city inhabitants are encouraged to provide their comments and opinions to Warsaw Trams regarding the new trams. The trams themselves are equipped with a monitoring system in the tram driver's cab. The buttons to open the doors and also to stick out the ramp for wheelchairs are conveniently located inside (next to the space for wheelchairs and on the doors) and outside the tram (on the doors). Also ticket validators are located low enough for people in wheelchairs. There are ticket selling machines onboard the new trams. The space dedicated to wheelchair users is designed in a way it can accommodate more than one wheelchair (spacious and with a very long safety belt). The electronic information system inside the tram provides information about tram stops: current stop, number of stops, time to destination; there is also a voice information system for people with visual impairments, and light system at the doors (indicating whether the doors are closing or when the tram starts to move) for people with hearing impairments. The timetables at the tram stops indicate times of operating of low-floor trams (marked with a square). Also the seats are made of bright coloured materials so they are easily visible. The aim is to provide modern transport for all traffic users regardless of their disability in the future with the most participation of low-floor trams enabling them to reach their destinations without having to fight the barriers. So far the Warsaw Trams have received much positive feedback.
