Who Are the Lepers of Today? In Jesus’ time, those suffering from leprosy were isolated in special camps outside cities in an effort to contain the disease. According to Jewish law, the only way a leper could be allowed to return to society was if he/she was declared “clean” by the priests. Who are the present day lepers? Who are the outcasts in our society? In my visitations to the sick and homebound, I have come to find that the elderly and those confined to nursing homes may be viewed as outcasts. I have observed the mentally ill as also being neglected. Our county jail system is home to future outcasts because society does not want to have them as neighbors. Even in our school system, we have an increased incident of bullying because children display prejudice at an early age. Pope Francis calls for “a greater commitment by our Church to alleviate these social problems, particularly of the young and the elderly.” The month of October is “Respect Life” month. We, as Catholic parishioners, need to be counter-cultural. Let us reject the common views of society and open our hearts to respect human life from conception to natural death. If we believe in the dignity of human life, we will be declared “clean” by our Lord. Deacon Mark Notice to Second Grade Parents Sacrament letters were mailed Thursday, October 10. Marriage Banns II Keith Rabideau and Aubrey Huelsbeck I Tyson Sargent and Katie Wettstein Two Notes for Ministers of the Eucharist 1) Each parish ministry is putting together a theme basket for the Oktoberfest Silent Auction. We would like to put one together from the Eucharistic Ministers and Sacristans with a theme of bread and wine. If you want to contribute to the basket, please contact Kim at 766-3773 or bring your donation to the rectory... Anything related to bread or wine. 2) Just a training refresher at the altar. When you come to the altar, if you are a chalice holder, please line up so you’re all facing the back of the altar. If you are a host distributor, face the side of the altar. The servers should always stand between the chalices and the hosts for receiving. Thus, on a typical weekend, there will be two host distributors on the side of the altar, server(s) next, and then the four chalice holders facing the back of the altar. Sound good? You’re all doing a great job! Just that one little tip as a reminder. Call Kim for any training. And, don’t forget to join the fun with the theme basket! Do you know how much Jesus loves you, Mark? He loves all of us so much. Prayer Service for Veterans All are invited to join the KCSS students and staff for a prayer service to honor veterans on Monday, November 11, at Holy Cross Church (8:20 am) or St. Aloysius Church (8:30 am). Share in our appreciation of freedom as we honor those who have sacrificed so much. We thank you! KCSS Guidance Class Teaches the 6 Pillars of Character In our KCSS guidance class, Miss Rachelle Schmidt teaches the 6 Pillars of Character to encourage students to act in ways that align with our Catholic faith. The character traits are Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. Many different activities and lesson plans are used to get the students engaged and thinking critically. During each character trait unit, the current character trait is taught along with a related guidance topic. The students will be posting work they have completed on the guidance bulletin boards at Holy Cross and St. Aloysius campus. Check it out!
