New Product
Innovation Competition
The New Product Innovation Competition was established by the Sawyer Business School
in 2006 to encourage innovation among its students. The Competition was founded by
Executive in Residence Sushil Bhatia, a globally known innovator, entrepreneur, inventor,
author, and professor, who holds several patents for his innovations. The competition is
open to all undergraduate and graduate students and alumni of Suffolk University’s Sawyer
Business School, College of Arts and Sciences and Law School.
Participants compete for cash prizes of $3,500 (first), $1,000 (second) and $500 (third).
The Urvashi Bhatia Green Product Award ($2,500) is awarded for an environment-friendly
new product idea. The MGT 101 prize is awarded to freshmen business students enrolled
in the required business course MGT 101 Business Foundations.

Sushil Bhatia is a globally known innovator, entrepreneur, inventor, author, and professor. His innovative
patented and proprietary products such as the Glue Stic, mailing labels, name badges and ink are used in our
daily lives and have generated millions of dollars in sales. For his innovative work he has appeared on CNN,
NBC, Good Morning America, etc. and has been written up in the Wall Street Journal, Economic Times,
and other global publications.
He is the founder of several companies in the areas of office products, packaging, pharmaceutical and
software and is the currently President and CEO of JMD Manufacturing.
Sushil is the author of numerous articles, holds several product patents, and has won several innovation
awards.
He is the past president of the Rotary Club, and is a past board member of the Metro West Chamber of
Commerce. Sushil is also founder of the Laughing Clubs of America and author of “Laughing Your Way to
Fitness with Yoga and Meditation” and combines his use of meditation, laughter and breathing techniques in
promoting innovation and development of new products.
After receiving his initial education in India, he earned his PhD in Chemistry from the Universite de Liege in
Belgium and his MBA from Suffolk University’s Executive Program.

William J. O’Neill, Jr.
Dean, Sawyer Business School
Dean O’Neill brings extensive corporate experience to this role. His goal is to develop influential leaders of
global business and public service. Since his tenure as Dean, the Business School has established a Global
MBA degree and an undergraduate degree in global business management. To intensify the student’s
exposure to global issues, the Business School has increased the number of faculty with global work and
education experiences and has increased the number of countries students may visit as part of their global
travel seminar program.
Bill began his business career in the Finance Training Program at the Ford Motor Company. After Ford, he
moved to the Polaroid Corporation where he spent much of his career in the executive offices directing
global strategy, worldwide marketing, sales, and business development, financial management, and investor
relations.
He is a member of the Board of Directors for the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, Concord Camera
Corporation, AdvanSource Biomaterials Corporation, and EDGAR Online. He has been associated with
many profit and nonprofit organizations and has served as Trustee for Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and the
Massachusetts Business Roundtable Education Reform Committee. He is also a Life Trustee for The New
England Aquarium and Lesley University.
Bill earned his JD from Suffolk University Law School, his MBA from Wayne State University, Michigan,
and his BA in Mathematics from Boston College.

Rick Mattilla
Director of Environmental Affairs
Genzyme Corporation
Rick is Director of Environmental Affairs for Genzyme Corporation, a worldwide
biotechnology and pharmaceutical company. At Genzyme for the past 24 years, he
has held positions in laboratory management, health and safety and environmental
management. Currently, he directs a department responsible for guiding environmental
management and performance for the corporation.
A microbiologist by profession, he is a LEED Accredited Professional working on
Genzyme green building projects. He is currently chair of the Massachusetts Renewable
Energy Trust, Green Building Advisory Committee, the City of Cambridge, Climate
Protection Advisory Committee, Museum of Science Environmental Sustainability
Committee, on the board of A Better City and member of the Massachusetts Zero Net
Energy Buildings Task Force. He is a Lt. Colonel (retired) in the US Army (Reserve)
Medical Department.
He also earned his BA in Biology from Boston University and his MS in Health Science
from Northeastern University.
Neill centers his attention on software and infrastructure technologies and is actively
involved in Highland’s investments in Desktone, Ocarina Networks and XORP. Prior
to joining Highland Capital Partners, Neill was a Business Development Manager
at Sandbox Industries, a Chicago incubator, where he worked with the founders to
develop innovative business concepts and bring new ventures to market. Previously,
Neill held operating roles in a number of technology startups. Most recently he was
at InnaPhase Corporation, where he led development of their Newton product line
until the company’s acquisition by Thermo Electron Corporation. Neil earned a BS in
Computer Science from Duke University and an MBA in Finance and Entrepreneurship
from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dmitry Andreyev
Dmitriy is a patent attorney for the Boston office of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris,
Glovsky and Popeo PC. Dmitriy’s work encompasses all aspects of intellectual property law
including prosecution, acquisition, valuation and enforcement of patents, trademarks and copyrights. He is
experienced in client counseling regarding intellectual property issues, strategies and enforcement programs
including patent prosecution and patent enforcement through litigation. Some of his recent litigation experience
includes patent enforcement cases brought against Microsoft, Oracle, Google and E.Piphany.
Dmitriy works with local and international clients ranging from individual inventors and small start-up companies to
major corporations. His intellectual property experience covers a variety of technologies, including internet search
systems, intelligent software solutions, web development tools, software licensing tools, database memory sharing
mechanisms, medical device, mechanical, portable insulin pumps, computer networks, data processing, lasers and
optics, wireless transaction systems, hardware systems, e-commerce, internet, customer relationship management
systems (CRM), telecommunications, medical laser systems, financial applications and clean energy.
Dmitriy received his BSc in Computer Science, summa cum laude, from Boston University and his JD from Suffolk
University Law School.
Aaron Bromberg
Aaron is a technology strategist in the Home Entertainment Division at Bose Corporation in Framingham, MA.
He is responsible for assessing technology and market trends, and creating the long-range product strategy for the
division. Additionally, Aaron works with product managers and engineers to plan the features and functions of
future Bose products. Prior to joining Bose, Aaron was a management consultant in Deloitte Consulting Growth
and Innovative practice. He received his BS from Cornell University and his MBA from Duke University.
Vijay Chaddah
Vijay works in the areas of corporate and transactional law at Gesmer Updegrove. He represents corporate
clients in a variety of areas including venture capital financing, mergers and acquisitions and general corporate
maintenance. Vijay received his bachelor’s degree from Kenyon College, his MA in philosophy, summa cum
laude, from the University of Illinois, and his JD, cum laude, from the University of Minnesota. Prior to joining
Gesmer Updegrove, he was associated with Testa Hurwitz and Thibeault, LLP.

Clara Chow
Clara is principal and founder of Cura Consulting Group. She has an extensive background in management and
sustainable development which includes the creation of a framework for green business/sustainable enterprise.
Clara’s expertise in this area covers strategy and market development for a clean technology start-up, industry
analysis for an environmental management software firm, environmental evaluations of energy alternatives for a
Cypriot consulting company, and green innovations to improve corporate social responsibility for an international
financial institution. Also, in partnership with GfK NOP, a global market research and consulting firm, her projects
include: analyses of customer value and positioning for one of the largest international express delivery companies
as well as assessments to measure the awareness and effectiveness of regulatory outreach and communication
efforts for a federal agency. Prior to founding Cura Consulting Group, Clara was part of the management team at
the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Robert Creeden
Bob is managing director of the Center for Innovative Ventures (CIV) at Partners Healthcare, where he oversees
the creation and launching of new ventures generated from Partners innovative research discoveries.
Bob has spent more than twenty-five years focusing on the commercialization of new technologies and promoting
emerging business, including fifteen years early stage venture capital investing experience and culminating in his
2005 appointment by Partners to establish the CIV. Previously, he was general partner at Egan- Managed Capital,
a $150 million dollar Boston-based venture fund, after having served as vice president of the Massachusetts
Technology Development Corporation, a 25 year old early stage venture firm that funds technology-based
companies in Massachusetts. Earlier in his career, he gained strategic operating expertise as a COO/CFO with
start-up ventures and as a management consultant with Control Data Business Advisors.
George M. Davison, III
George Davison is founder of Davison.com and creator of Inventionland. The mission of his innovative
product development company, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is to inspire creativity through new product
development, education and a variety of other means.
Davison provides comprehensive services to inventors, corporations and entrepreneurs using an exclusive
development process that has revolutionized how an idea is developed. The industry breakthrough has resulted
in Davison-designed products in stores around the world, such as Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Target, Bed, Bath &
Beyond, QVC and more. In 2006, George Davison built Inventionland - “the world’s most creative workspace,”
for which Entrepreneur Magazine called him a “creative genius.” The 65,000-square-foot design facility, with 15
themed sets that include a pirate ship, castle and tree house, is part of Davison’s state-of-the-art product sample
production factory.

A. Joseph DiBiase
In addition to having practiced law for more than nine years, Joseph has held
several positions in fields as diverse as publishing, software, and education. He is currently
Director of Business Development at Insight Direct, Inc., a leading software development company
for the field service industries. In this position he is involved in identifying business and technology
opportunities to improve Insight Direct’s features and product line, improve workflows for Insight’s customer
base, establish software integrations with partners, and drive revenue through creative and non-traditional
methods. A life-long early adopter of new technologies, he has been on numerous committees evangelizing
the benefits of technology in streamlining processes, automating repetitive tasks, and in selecting and improving
technologies for various organizations. He earned his JD from Suffolk University Law School.
John N. Driscoll
John is the founder and technology and marketing manager of PID Analyzers, LLC. PID Analyzers develops and
markets portable and process instrumentation using technologies such as photoionization, flame ionization, GC,
Infrared, UV, and, electrochemistry. Prior to founding PID Analyzers, he founded and was President of HNU
Systems, Inc. where he developed the first commercial photoionization detector for measuring ppb levels of
VOCs in the environment. John is also the Founder, Chairman and was president of the Environmental Business
Council of New England.
He is the author of over 100 published papers and has presented his papers at many conferences. He earned
undergraduate degrees in chemical engineering and chemistry from the Franklin Institute of Boston and Suffolk
University. He also earned a graduate degree in physical chemistry from Boston University and a graduate degree
in business from Suffolk University.
Dennis Fernandez
Dennis is managing partner of Fernandez & Associates, LLP. He has had over twenty-years experience in Silicon
Valley and High-Tech Industry, as a patent prosecutor and intellectual property litigator, a venture capitalist,
and an engineering manager. He specializes in developing offensive and defensive patent strategies for start-up
electronics, software and biotech companies and their investors.
Dennis serves as strategic advisor to leading venture capital firms, including Sevin Rosen, Venrock, Charles River
Ventures, and Walden International. Representative clients include Marvell Technology, SiRF Technology, Ayala
Corporation, Stanford University, and Northwestern University, as well as various start-up companies acquired by
Cisco, Broadcom, Ciena, and Cadence Design Systems.
He also serves on the Editorial Board of the Nanotechnology Law & Business Journal, the Board of Directors of
the Association of Patent Law Firms, and the Science and Technology Advisory Council.
Previously Dennis served on a consultancy with the United Nations Development Programme on Asian
economic development.

Mukul P. Gupta
Mukul is professor of marketing and dean of Research, Consulting, Strategic Planning and International Linkages at
the Management Development Institute (MDI) in Gurgaon, India. Under his leadership, MDI has become one of
the largest providers of executive education and one of the best globally networked business schools in India.
In a career that has spanned 25 years, he has spent equal time in industry and academia. His corporate experience
includes manufacturing and marketing of pharmaceutical products, advertising and consulting. Prior to MDI, he
held positions at the International Management Institute and Indian Institute of Management in India.
Edward J. Keefe
Edward is chief financial officer at M/C Venture Partners. In this capacity he is responsible for the oversight of
the finance and administration activities, information technology and reporting to the Limited Partners. Prior to
joining M/C Venture Partners in October 2004, Keefe was Vice President of Finance of Atlas Venture, a
leading international early-stage venture capital firm, investing in communications, information technology, and life
sciences companies. Previously, he also served as Manager of Financial Planning and Analysis at Instrumentation
Laboratory, Tax Consultant at Coopers and Lybrand, and as a Senior Financial Analyst at Raytheon Company.
He is also is a member of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, Private Equity CFO Association and the
Treasurers’ Club of Boston. Edward earned his BS in Business Administration with a concentration in finance
from the University of Maine, MBA from Suffolk University Sawyer Business School and a MS in Taxation from
Bentley College.
Christopher P. Lynch
Chris Lynch is senior vice president of Data Solutions, F5 where he oversees F5’s data solution technology
portfolio. Before its acquisition by F5, Chris served as President and CEO of Acopia Networks. Previously, he
served as Vice President of Worldwide Content Delivery Networking Sales at Cisco Systems, and was Vice
President of Worldwide Sales, Marketing, and Support at ArrowPoint Communications, which was acquired by
Cisco. Chris also served as Vice President of North American Sales at Prominet Corporation, which was acquired
by Lucent Technologies. Chris earned his BSBA in Management from Suffolk University Sawyer Business School
and his MBA from Bentley College.

Avrum Mayman
Avrum is responsible for new product management of Bose Corporation’s
Lifestyle Home Theater systems. In this role, Avrum is responsible for long
range planning, setting the product vision, creating product definitions, working with the
development teams to ensure the vision becomes reality, and launching the product into the
marketplace. In addition to his 5+ years experience at Bose, Avrum has held a variety of marketing,
strategy, and business development roles in a variety of industries including financial services, logistics, and
software manufacturing. Prior to these roles, Avrum spent five years as an Engineer on the Space Shuttle’s Orbital
propulsion systems, where he helped return the fleet to launch after the Challenger disaster. Avrum earned a
BA in Physics from Vassar College, an MS in Aero Engineering from the University of Michigan, and an MS in
Management from the MIT Sloan School.
Katerina Papp
Katerina is a vice president, portfolio manager in the Commercial Banking Division of Eastern Bank. In this
capacity she manages a diverse portfolio of commercial customers with the total exposure of $220 mln and is
responsible for expanding the medical device/life sciences specialty banking group. She is a board member of
the Risk Management Association‘s Young Professionals Committee. Katerina holds a MBA degree from Suffolk
University Sawyer Business School and a BS in Economics from Vilnius University (Lithuania).
David Parkinson
Dave is president, chief executive officer and Director of Vericept. He is a technology Executive with 25+ years
of demonstrated success in leadership roles. Dave joined Vericept from Sigma Partners where he served as an
Executive in Residence since March of 2002.
Prior to Sigma Partners, he served as the President and CEO of Books24X7, the fastest growing e-learning
company for six consecutive years since 1999. Books 24X7 was sold to Skillsoft in December of 2001 under
Parkinson’s leadership. Prior to Books24X7, Parkinson was with Boston Consulting Group, an international
consulting firm, where he served as Director, Partner and Chief Financial Officer.
Prior to Boston Consulting Group, Parkinson was Co-Founder of SystemSoft Corporation, which had a successful
IPO in 1995. He has also held the position of Chief Financial Officer at Phoenix Technologies, a Sigma Partners
portfolio company that went public in 1988.
Parkinson started his high tech career at Cullinet Software, the first independent software company listed on the
NYSE. Parkinson holds a BA in Philosophy from Suffolk University College of Arts and Sciences and a master’s
degree from Northeastern University.

Narottam Puri
Narottam is president of medical strategy and quality for Fortis Healthcare Limited in India. He possess over 40
years experience in the Indian healthcare system. He’s held positions in government, as a teacher, practicing
clinician, a medical entrepreneur, then in a management role in a “not for profit” hospital and then a top
management role in corporate healthcare. His travels and work experience has given Narottam a 360 degree
view of healthcare. He belongs to a rare breed of healthcare professionals who have been exposed to and have
experienced all facets of healthcare in India.
A topper in Delhi University in MBBS & MS, Narottam is a winner of several prestigious awards and recognition
and is a member of several medical associations and industry bodies including FICCI. Passionately involved in
quality, training and education, he has written about twenty articles in various medical journals, and has contributed
to three medical books.
Bill Shaw
Bill is a patent attorney for Boston Scientific Corporation(“BSC”). He has been at BSC for 17 years and has filled
many roles including R&D engineer, Patent Agent and now Patent Attorney. Bill is responsible for all intellectual
property issues (contracts, product clearance, patents, training) for an $800mm division at BSC and oversees
a patent portfolio of nearly 5,000 US and foreign patents and applications. He earned his JD from Suffolk
University Law School with a concentration in Intellectual Property.
Prior to BSC, Bill was an R&D engineer for Kendall Healthcare. He holds an ME in Biomedical Engineering and a
BS in Mechanical Engineering. Bill has contributed as an inventor on more than 35 patents and applications.
Mark Solomon
Mark Solomon is a principal of the Hamilton, Brook, Smith & Reynolds, and has dedicated his legal career
to guiding engineering companies and university engineering centers through the development, management,
protection, and enforcement of intellectual property rights. He drafts and prosecutes patent applications and
assists clients with intellectual property matters relating to patent litigation, trademark oppositions, written and
oral opinions, trademark prosecution, copyright law, licensing, domain name disputes, the sale and licensing of
intellectual property assets, and associated counseling strategies.
Marks technical background includes diverse engineering technologies such as telecommunications, optics,
digital signal processing, optical and electrical networking, control systems, business methods, analog and
digital electronics, software, GPS systems, antennas, medical devices, mechanical devices, fuel cells, and other
renewable energy sources.
Mark takes a partnership approach to client matters, often personally serving on patent committees and advising
on successful and cost effective US and international patent strategies aimed to support the client’s unique and
specific business goals.
Mark is a respected leader in the legal community and is preparing to serve as the 2009 President of the Boston
Patent Law Association. He speaks frequently, addressing a variety of intellectual property topics and audiences.
Specific presentations include addressing the International Society for Law and Technology (ISLAT) on the
comparison of US and international business method patent strategies, presenting to medical device industry
leaders and technologists on patent strategy, and guiding inventors, entrepreneurs, and investors through the
intellectual property life-cycle at Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s Invention2Venture event.

Paul D. Sorkin
Paul is a partner with the firm of Weingarten, Schurgin, Gagnebin, &
Lebovici, LLP and has over fifteen years of experience preparing, prosecuting
and maintaining patent and trademark portfolios for corporations of all sizes as well as for
individual inventors. He has extensive expertise in preparing patent applications in the software, electrical,
electromechanical, and electronic arts. He has also prepared numerous pre-filing patentability studies and has often
been called upon to assess questions of patent validity and patent infringement. Sorkin has also been involved in
due diligence investigations during his career.
Before becoming a patent attorney, Sorkin worked in the high tech industry for approximately eight years. At Data
General, Sorkin worked as a test engineer designing, implementing, and supporting test equipment (hardware and
software), reviewing product designs for testability and manufacturability, and coordinating test plans and capital
spending budgets.
Sorkin earned his BS in Electrical Engineering, with high honors, from Rutgers University College of Engineering
and his JD, cum laude, from Suffolk University Law School.
Thomas M. Sullivan
Tom is a partner in the intellectual law firm of Lowrie, Lando, and Anastasi, LLP (LL&A). Tom is wellexperienced in all aspects of Intellectual Property Law and in particular in strategies for successfully building and
maintaining corporate patent portfolios. He is practiced in a wide range of technology fields including analog and
digital electronics, power electronics, computer software and hardware, electromagnetics, electronics assembly and
manufacturing, and computer vision systems.
Tom’s practice is built around a strong technical foundation. Before entering the field of law, Tom had a successful
career as a Senior Electrical Design Engineer at Raytheon Company, and in total, has over ten years of experience
as an Electrical Engineer. Prior to attending law school, and while working as an Electrical Engineer, Tom
obtained an MBA. In his practice, Tom particularly enjoys using the combination of his business and technology
backgrounds to work closely with clients to develop intellectual property strategies that are consistent with the
clients’ business goals. In 2005, he was named in Boston Magazine as one of Massachusetts’ “Super Lawyers” in
the field of intellectual property.
Gaurav Tewari
Gaurav is a principal at Highland Capital Partners focusing on technology with specific experience and interest in
internet, digital media, mobile and online marketing technologies. Gaurav represents Highland on the boards of
StyleFeeder and Top Ten Media.
Prior to joining Highland Capital Partners, Guarav was a Corporate Strategy Manager at Microsoft Corporation,
where he worked with top leadership to define and implement corporate-wide growth opportunities via organic
initiatives and acquisitions. Before Microsoft, Guarav was a consultant with McKinsey & Company, where he led
strategic projects for Fortune 100 companies across a number of verticals, including high tech, financial services,
healthcare and energy. At McKinsey, Guarav extensively advised senior management on investments and
divestitures, operational improvement and organizational initiatives, and in developing and executing technology
strategy roadmaps.
Gaurav holds seven US technology patents. He is the author of nine published works of research.

Ralph Trementozzi
Ralph is senior counsel with Foley & Lardner LLP. He is a member of the firm’s Electronics Practice and Emerging
Technologies Industry Team.
Ralph provides a broad range of legal services in the area of intellectual property, including counseling clients
in matters pertaining to patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. He is also experienced in a variety of
high-technology areas including wireless and Internet technologies, computer hardware and software, biomedical
devices, optics, fiber optics, electro-mechanical devices, and circuitry.
Ralph earned his BS in electrical engineering and MS in electrical engineering from Northeastern University. His
undergraduate studies included over two years of practical engineering experience at GTE Communications
Systems, where he designed, prototyped, and tested hardware circuits and systems. After graduation, he was
employed as a radio frequency (RF) engineer at SAIC where he developed antennas and antenna instrumentation
for various radiowave communications systems. In 1989, Ralph joined The MITRE Corporation, where he
contributed to a variety of programs concerning telecommunications, satellite communications, radar, and avionics.
In 1996, he joined Raytheon as a senior hardware design engineer supporting the development of various
electronic systems.
Ralph earned his JD degree, cum laude, from Suffolk University Law School.
Dennis Walczewski
Denis is chief executive officer for MBL International where he has set the long term strategy and focus for MBL
International. This includes product acquisitions and the acquisition of Bion Enterprise, a company with a virology
diagnostic focus. Since joining MBL International, and under his leadership, the company has tripled its revenue
and the number of employees. The Boston Business Journal recently listed MBL International as one of the
largest science companies in the Boston area. Today MBL International is viewed by its parent company as the
leading business unit responsible for Global markets outside of Japan, Korea and China.
Before entering business, Dennis held positions for the US Department of Justice, and US Drug Enforcement
Administration as both a forensic chemist and special agent and may be Suffolk’s first forensic chemist. With his
science background he managed sales organizations on national levels in both the area of diagnostics and research
reagents. During his career he was worked closely with research and development teams and introduced project
management to Boehringer Mannheim (Roche). He was instrumental in changing the packaging of enzyme
products by Promega in which a design patent was issued.
Dennis earned his BS in Chemistry from Suffolk University College of Arts and Sciences and an MBA from
Indiana Wesleyan University.
William Shawn Yeager
Shawn Yeager is a senior strategic business development and legal executive for Matchmine. Shawn joined
Matchmine to start up and lead the company’s business development efforts in July 2007.
Previously, Shawn founded Auditude Inc., the premiere content tracking and advertising verification firm serving
studios, media houses, and advertising agencies. While serving alternatively as CEO and Vice President of
Business Development, Shawn was responsible for strategic direction, partner generation, and revenue, landing
clients ranging from subsidiaries of Clear Channel to Stacom MediaVest.
Shawn began his career in the early 90s in Silicon Valley while still in graduate school. After stints at 3Com and
Pointcast, Shawn joined the Atlanta based SearchByMedia, the first media-centric syndicated search platform
in the world. Shawn was responsible for over 50% of all partnerships and revenue generated during his term,
resulting in him being promoted to run both Business and Partnership Development.
Shawn graduated with honors from the UCLA with degrees in Economics and Political Science and earned his
MBA and law degrees from UC Davis. Shawn is a member of the Georgia Bar and sits on the advisory boards of
several start-up companies.
