The subject of identity is one most artists battle with – whether by voiding it of its
importance, basing their art entirely on it, or simply questioning it.
As a young African-American, Gordon Skinner was frustrated by his lack of
ownership in society – feeling fragmented, colonized, and lost. “I felt robbed of my
heritage and culture” he said, and turned to painting to vent that sense of invisibility.
In 2009, Skinner began painting figures wearing colorful masks that represent
both concealment and expression. Though the figures’ true identities and defining
features are concealed by the masks, the images are expressive and dynamic and full
of vigor and animation.
Skinner produces work that is raw, spontaneous, colorful, and fragmented.
Through a variety of mediums, he is locating his voice out of voicelessness, and
emerging into a category of human that transcends definition and exists purely in
a place of creativity and innovation.
Hard Works will be on view through March 13. The Gallery is open Monday to
Friday: 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed Sunday. For more

Leadership Workshop this month on February 22. There
will be three 40-minute sessions for club members to
attend to better enhance individual student leadership and
improve the success of their clubs. Session 1 runs from
11:30 a.m. to 12:10 p.m., Session 2 runs from 12:15 to

One billion women dancing is a revolution.
The Fairfield County Women’s Center (FCWC) and
Student Activities invite you to join a gathering in the
NCC East Campus Art Gallery to protest global violence
against women.
All NCC, students, friends, faculty, staff, community
members and guests, both female and male, are invited
to share their commitment to end violence against women.
Self-expressive art forms (poetry, song, dance, posters,
etc.) are welcome to show solidarity in a global initiative
to demand an end to violence against women. Inform
yourself by watching a three-minute video on this

Lumina String Quartet
to Perform
The Center for Teaching is pleased to announce that
K.C. Senie, Director of Institutional Advancement and
Strategic Planning, will hold two workshops on grants.
Topics will include: where to find grants, how to write
them, how to submit them, and how to manage them
once they’re obtained. The workshops promise to be not
only interesting but also necessary for those who would
like to investigate the available grants out there, but don’t
know how to begin the process.
If you are already involved with grants, you are also
invited to attend and have your questions answered.

NCC Plus 50 Initiative
ePortfolio Template
Available to Graphic Design
Students
Norwalk Community College was recently chosen to join
the Plus 50 Encore Completion Program, a national effort
to train 10,000 baby boomers for new jobs in healthcare,
education and social services. This program is sponsored by
the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).
The college will assist adults age 50 and over in completing degrees or certificates in high-demand occupations
that give back to the community. With many adults over
50 out of work or seeking to transition to a new career, the
program offers skill updates and career makeovers.
NCC will prepare older adults for such careers as
medical or dental assistants, home health aides, and child
development associates.
NCC has long been committed to serving mature
learners and understanding their unique needs. In 2010,
NCC launched an innovative partnership with Meadow
Ridge, a senior retirement community in Redding, CT,
to provide on-site courses for residents taught by NCC
faculty. NCC also hosts the Lifetime Learners, a 20-yearold nonprofit adult education organization offering lectures
and courses on the NCC campus for learners over 50.
Norwalk Community College is one of only 17
colleges recently selected for the Plus 50 project.
The Plus 50 Encore Completion Program is offered by
the AACC in cooperation with its member colleges and
will ultimately comprise 100 colleges with special training
programs for students age 50 and older.
An ePortfolio template has been created and will soon
be required for use by all students in the Graphic Design
Program. Students will create an ePortfolio with the new
template in the Intro Graphic Design I course (GRA 151)
and then populate it as they move through the program.
Pages exist in the template for all required studio courses.
Students can customize it within the framework, and
may add pages to it for any non-required studio courses
they take. Ultimately, this can be used for the Portfolio
Prep class, for overall assessment purposes, and for
student career and/or transfer-oriented goals. For more

Please remind students that the deadline for applying
for May 2013 Graduation is Friday, March 1, at 4 p.m.
Applications are available on the web or at the Records
Office in room E102. Completed applications should be
returned to the Records Office. There is no charge for
applying for graduation.
The deadline for applying for August 2013
Graduation for students who, in advance of graduation,
want to walk in the May Commencement Ceremony
is also Friday, March 1, at 4 p.m. Commencement 2013
is Thursday, May 23.

in the culinary arts industry including an A.O.S. degree
in Culinary Arts from the Culinary Institute of America
in Hyde Park, NY, and a Grand Diploma from the
International Pastry Arts Center in Elmsford, NY.
Maronian is married to Chef Stephen Maronian, who
also teaches in the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management program at NCC. The two own the highly acclaimed
Sweet Lisa’s Exquisite Cakes bakery in Cos Cob, CT.
On February 4, Dr. Elsa Núñez, Vice President of the
Board of Regents for Connecticut State Universities
and President of Eastern Connecticut State University,
approved Linda Lerman, Director of Library Services at
NCC, to be the Board of Regents and Department of
Higher Education Representative to the State Library’s
Advisory Council for Library Planning and Development
(ACLPD). The ConnSCU Library Directors and the State
Librarian made a joint proposal recommending Lerman
