attend a Pre-Jordan meeting prior to baptism, which is arranged
at a mutually convenient time.

Dear Parishioners,
I used to tease a woman that
worked for the Redemptorist. Often I
would call her over the phone to discuss
ministry/business. “Thanks a lot, sister,” I’d say. But
then one day she caught me off guard. I was signing off
the phone conversation with my usual “Sister” comment
when she asked if she could speak to me on a more
personal / spiritual level. I wasn’t really sure what was
about to come next. A crisis of faith, serious illness,
resignation, engagement, or perhaps she was simply
going to tell me off? I was preparing for the worst. She
said, “You know how you are always calling me
sister…?” I was ready to get an ear-full, when she told
me that she had been praying and discerning for a very
long time and has decided to enter the convent. I
exhaled and said, “Congratulations, Sister!” Of course,
being the Redemptorist Vocation Director at the time,
nothing could have delighted me more than to welcome
another religious vocation in the religious life and
ministry of the church. However, since this was the
first I had heard of her interest, I was a bit curious how
she settled on the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters. We
would keep in touch, mostly running into each other at a
church celebration.
Recently, I celebrated Mass for a group of
various religious sisters by Immaculata University in
Malvern, Pa. My friend attended the Mass and
afterwards she offered to give me a tour of their Mother
House - which I had never seen. Walking through the
chapel and down the corridors I passed images of Sr.
Theresa Maxis - their founder, statues of St. John
Neumann. As we walked, there were other familiar
faces that appeared familiar to me as well. St.
Alphonsus Ligouri, my founder was also hanging there
on the wall; as well a number of pictures of Our Lady of
Perpetual Help, and a Redemptorist priest by the name
of Fr. Louis Gillet, C.Ss.R.. I began to recall the stories
we were taught many years ago in my own novitiate
year (a 1 year retreat before taking vows) and
suddenly… it hit me. Just like a piano from out of the
sky, or a bright light that now shining upon a marble
head! Our former employee, felt a deep call to serve and
once she visited the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of
Mary, everything just seems to feel right and slowly fell
into place. Fr. Gillet was part of the earliest days in the
founding of the I.H.M. sisters and they draw much of
their spirituality from the legacy of St. Alphonsus and
his band of brothers commonly called, the
Redemptorists. When I turned around and she saw the
reaction on my face, my friend said: “Now you get it…”
In that moment, she was not just my friend, not just a
nun in a habit… I knew she really was… My Sister!

The liturgical year is beginning to draw to a close. Today’s
Gospel story of the curing of Bartimaeus is a cue for us to
open our own eyes and review just how far we have come on
this year’s journey of faith. We have heard much, especially
over the past several weeks, that challenges the accepted
attitudes and behaviors of our society. We have been asked to
examine the strength of our various relationships. We have
been challenged to embrace the cross of Christ. If we have
moved very little on our journey, we are given a chance this
week to make a new commitment. Let us make the words of
Bartimaeus our own: “Master, I want to see.”

Mis Queridos Feligreses,
Yo solía bromear con una mujer
que trabajaba para los Redentoristas.
Frecuentemente la llamaba por teléfono
para hablar sobre el ministerio/asuntos.
“Muchas gracias, hermana,” yo le decía.
Pero un día ella me cogió por sorpresa. Yo estaba
terminando la conversación por teléfono con mi
comentario usual “hermana” cuando ella me preguntó si
podía hablar conmigo en un nivel más personal/espiritual.
Yo no estaba realmente seguro que era lo que venía
después. ¿Una crisis de fe, una enfermedad seria,
resignación, compromiso, o simplemente ella iba a
regañarme? Yo me estaba preparando para lo peor. Ella
dijo, “¿Tú sabes como siempre me estás llamando
hermana…? Yo estaba listo para escuchar el regaño,
cuando ella me dijo que había estado orando y
discerniendo por largo tiempo y decidió entrar al
convento. Yo exhale y dije, “¡Felicidades, Hermana!”
Desde luego, siendo el Director de Vocación de los
Redentoristas en aquel tiempo, nada me hubiese gustado
más que dar la bienvenida a otra vocación religiosa a la
vida religiosa y ministerio de la iglesia. Sin embargo,
como esta era la primera vez que oía de su interés, tenía
un poco de curiosidad de cómo se decidió por las
Hermanas del Inmaculado Corazón de María. Nos
mantendremos en contacto, mayormente encontrándonos
en una celebración de la iglesia.
Recientemente, yo celebré la Misa para un grupo
de varias hermanas religiosas por la Universidad
Immaculata en Malvern, Pa. Mi amiga asistió a la Misa y
después se ofreció a darme un recorrido de la Casa Madre
- la cual yo nunca había visto. Caminando a través de la
capilla y por los corredores pasé las imágenes de la Hna.
Theresa Maxis – su fundadora, estatuas de San Juan
Neumann. Mientras caminábamos, había otras caras
conocidas que eran familiares para mí. San Alfonso
Ligouri, mi fundador estaba también colgado en la pared;
como un número de cuadros de Nuestra Señora del
Perpetuo Socorro, y un sacerdote Redentorista llamado
Padre Louis Gillet, C.Ss.R. Yo comencé a recordar las
historias que nos enseñaron muchos años atrás en mi
propio año de noviciado (un retiro de un año antes de
tomar los votos) y repentinamente… me golpeó ¡como un
piano que cayó del cielo o una luz radiante que ahora
brilla sobre una cabeza de mármol! Nuestra ex –
empleada, sintió un llamado profundo a servir y al visitar
las Hermanas del Inmaculado Corazón de María, al
parecer todo se siente bien y lentamente cayó en su lugar.
El Padre Gillet fue parte de los primeros días en la
fundación de la Hermanas del I.H.M. y ellas sacan mucho
de su espiritualidad del legado de San Alfonso y sus
hermanos comúnmente llamados los Redentoristas.
Cuando di la vuelta y ella vio la reacción en mi cara, mi
amiga dijo: “Ahora te das cuenta…” En ese momento,
ella no era únicamente mi amiga, no solamente una monja
en un hábito… Yo sabía que ella realmente era… ¡Mi
Hermana!
