Appearing just in time to tum the tide in the Battle of Britain, the
Supermarine
Spitfire was the best British fighter of World War li.
Conceived
as the Type 300 by Reginald Mitchell in 1937, the
Spitfire Mark li was an improved version of the original produced
in early 1940 at Castle Bromwich.
With the 1,175 hp RoIIs
Royce Merlin XII V-12 engine and a constant speed three-bladed
propeller, the Mark li was capable of 360 mph at an altitude of
19,500 feet, and had a service ceiling of 36,500 feet. The elliptical,
near-supersonic
wing design of the Spitfire enabled the Mark li
to dive at over Mach 0.92, faster than even the German jets
developed
later in the war. This made the Spitfire as fast and
more maneuverable than its arch-rival, the German Messerschmitt

•
most famous was Air Commander Douglas Bader, who shot down
over 12 enemy, aircraft during the Battle of Britain. Ali of this was
accomplished
in spite of a pre-war accident which left him with
two artificial legs. Most of his victories were scored as a Squadron
Commander in a Spitfire. He preferred the "A" wing armament of
8 .303 cal. Browning machine guns over the less reliable 20 mm
cannon that were available, and up to 500 Ibs. of bombs could be
earried. Downed in an air collísion with a Messerschmítt
over
France on August 7 1941, Commander
BadeF spent the rest of
the war in captivity. Although often outnumbered, the R.A.F, pilots
in their Spitfires and the less-capable but more numerous Hawker
Hurricanes, helped clear the skies over England and preserve its
independence from Nazi Germany during World War li.
