Walpole Weekly February 10, 2016 www.walpole.org.au Free community newspaper Proudly published by the Walpole Community Resource Centre in litter-free Walpole Made possible by our advertisers Tin Shed Pottery end of an era Bob and Ros Quin and the Tin Shed Pottery Gallery have been a part of Walpole for the past 13 years. The closing of the pottery studio marks the end of an era for our community. Bob and Ros have been active community members and hard working volunteers in many community groups. They also founded the ‘Art and Craft in Action’ now the ‘Walpole Art Award’, perhaps their biggest legacy to Walpole. With deep sadness Ros told the Weekly that after suffering from a stroke last year, Bob now finds himself unable to continue making his beloved pottery. They have had to make the tough decision to close the Gallery and leave Walpole to relocate to Mandurah, where they will be closer to specialised medical services and family. The Tin Shed Pottery Gallery has been a well-known artistic hub in Walpole. Bob trained as a potter in Midland Tech and has been producing pottery ever since. His first exhibition was held at the Avon Valley Art Centre and was named ‘Dreaming in colour’. Bob Quin closes the doors of his Tin Shed Pottery Gallery. Photo Weekly Bob has been an active member of the artistic community holding exhibitions, demonstrations and teaching the art of pottery. Speaking to him his love for the craft is evident. Bob said, “After I had my stroke Ros organised for me to go to the Albany potters group, they were very kind and let me work alongside them. I was given small 1 kilogram balls of clay to spin but I couldn’t spin anything. Next to me I noticed a young girl spinning the most magnificent deep bowl. It had perfectly spun sides. “I asked her who had taught her to do that and she said “You! You did!” Now for me it means a lot that I have passed my skills to someone else.” (Continued on page 8) Walpole Weather Published by Walpole Community Resource Centre (Inc) Latham Ave. (PO Box 197), Walpole, WA 6398 Phone (08) 9840 1395 Fax (08) 9840 1394 Email: weekly@walpole.org.au Web: www.Walpole.org.au DISTRIBUTION: Up to 450 print copies + electronic downloads in PDF format from Walpole.org.au + social media promotion. It is refreshing to see an encouraging response to the loss of students from Walpole Primary School. Although the loss wasn't the school's choice, we applaud the school's desire to embrace low enrolments and "reap the benefits of small country school learning". —Name withheld by request. North Walpole Road update Note: As a result of our reader letter 'No excuse for Shire', WW Feb 3, page 4, regarding the need for an upgrade to North Walpole Road from Allen Road to South Coast Highway, the Shire of Manjimup have provided information responding to this issue in this week's edition of the Shire Bulletin. The Shire Bulletin can be found on the back cover of this publication. —Ed. Walpole Weekly Colourbond cottage? ‘abhorrent’ It has come to my notice that this week's Shire Council Agenda includes an application to strip the timber cladding from the Pioneer Cottage (Visitor Centre) to replace this with colourbond. I find this abhorrent. What do you feel? Corrugated iron is excellent for shed building but not a good tourism image. Perhaps there should be a public meeting? —Kate O'Brien The Weekly contacted Visitor Centre Manager Adele Brown . She kindly provided the following statement: “The Walpole Nornalup Visitor Centre has requested approval to carry out the following improvements to the building, access and signage. A facelift to include purchase and installation of new external cladding. Upgrade the verandah entry deck to accommodate wheel chair mobility and make it more user friendly.” Active citizens commended Congratulations to Kay and Dennis Hall recipients of a commendation from The Shire of Manjimup in the Premier's Australia Day Active Citizenship Awards. The awards recognise outstanding contributions to our community and foster Australian pride and spirit through active citizenship. Dennis and Kay were nominated for their valuable contributions to St John ambulance, Walpole Silver Chain and to the Seniors Jarrah Glenn Village. Kay said, “We were very happy to receive an invitation to attend the Australia Day Ceremony as nominees of the award. It was a nice day.” Dennis added, “We don't do it for the recognition, but when you do get recognised it makes you realise that the community do appreciate it.” The Award ceremony was held in Northcliffe on Australia Day January 26. The meetings will be led by the Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister the Hon Michael McCormack MP. They will involve a diverse selection of local community leaders and representatives from Regional Development Australia committees, regional industries and academic institutions. According to Government information the meetings will provide, “A direct channel for the Government to hear first-hand community solutions to respond to challenges and harness opportunities for economic growth.” Federal Member for O’Connor Rick Wilson said, “I am looking forward to discussing important regional issues in the electorate with the Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack when he visits Albany and Kalgoorlie in February. “I believe this regional development policy process will provide many opportunities to showcase our area, and to help shape new ideas to further grow our economy and create local jobs.” Assistant Minister McCormack is leading the policy development process and said he welcomed input into this policy from all regions of Australia. “I encourage all interested parties to get involved by contacting their local Regional Development Australia committees, local MPs or my Department.” To provide feedback on existing government programmes or to share ideas on how to improve our town and region email Rick.Wilson.MP@aph.gov.au or regionalfutures@infrastructure.gov.au. Speaking of his Louisiana pot Bob said, “Look at it. I can see the imprint of the potter’s hand at the bottom of the pot. I can put my hand over it. “I run my finger through the clay and I wonder who did that work. I wonder if someone will ever ask that of one of my pots.” There is no doubt that the Quins have had a profound influence in creating opportunities for the development of other artists in Walpole. Ros and Bob, with the help of Rhonda and Rick Perpoli, started the Walpole Art and Craft in Action in 2008, which has developed into the popular Walpole Art Award. Ros said, “The 3D Art Award last year was a huge success, and we want this to be our legacy. “We want to encourage people to have a go. The district has many talented people yet to be discovered.” Bob who is also a marriage celebrant conducted many ceremonies in Walpole and was also an active member of the Walpole RSL. Ros was a member of the Walpole Nornalup and Districts Historical Society for ten years, she was an active volunteer at the Walpole Community Resource Centre, Silver Chain and Seniors Accommodation, and she even found time to be part of the local Book Club. Jenny Willcox said, “Both Ros and Bob worked very hard towards fundraising for the new Silver Chain building and organised several large wine raffles. Bob travelled all over the countryside picking up donated cartons of wine. Bob would then hawk himself into town and man the table flogging tickets. They raised thousands.” Continuing in their generosity, the Quins have 8 - February 10, 2016 donated art supplies to the Walpole Primary School and also pottery remnants have been donated to the Ficifolia Community Garden to create a meandering mosaic pathway in the garden. Bob said, “It is my way of leaving something for the community. I want to thank everyone who has supported me over the years.” Despite the current circumstances, the Quin’s outlook for the future is positive. Bob told the Weekly that he wants to pour his energy into writing, “I want to get into writing. Even if I can’t do pottery anymore, I can still write. “I have a lot to write about. My belief is if you are not passionate about what you do then why are you doing it?” A community farewell for the Quins is planned for Saturday February 27, with the final details soon to be announced. Willcox Walpole Weekly February the time of plenty From your Ficifolia Community Garden... By Chris Bellanger This month is the time of the year when most home gardeners have so much produce, it can be a full-time job dealing with it all. It is a time of preserving jams and pickles, fruit and vegetable bottling, and drying. Eggplant, or more correctly aubergine, is a prolific producer from January to March in Walpole. Pick them when fully deep and glossy purple, as the green part is quite bitter. This month's delicious middle eastern eggplant recipe is contributed by Di Pickersgill. Baba Ghanoush Ingredients: 2 large eggplants approximately1kg Olive oil or cooking spray 2 cloves of garlic, crushed 2 Tbsp. tahini ¼ cup lemon juice ¼ cup Greek style yoghurt (Seasoning- ½ tsp sweet paprika, salt and pepper). Bake or grill egg-plant until soft. Place in a colander for a 10 minutes to remove excess liquid. Remove skin and chop roughly. Process all ingredients (except seasonings) until smooth. Add salt and pepper to taste. Spoon into a bowl. Sprinkle with paprika and drizzle with good olive oil. Use as a dip. Serve with crusty bread. Enjoy! The Ficifolia Garden is your community garden. Volunteers always welcome, every Thursday afternoon from 4pm. Send off for Dr Florian Mutzke We would like to invite members of the community to join us for an afternoon tea to farewell local Dr Florian Mutzke. Florian, who is part of the Denmark Medical Centre practice, will have his last consultations with Walpole patients on Wed 17th February. He has been an integral part of Walpole Health reform and we wish him well in his new venture. An afternoon tea is planned for Wednesday 17 February at 4.30pm at the Walpole Resource Centre Living herbs garden sculpture made from recycled materials. Photo C. Rod & Rae Burton February 10, 2016 -9 Small grants on offer South Coast Natural Resource Management has announced the first Regional Landcare Facilitators Community Small Grant Programme for 2016 funded by the National Landcare Programme. The programme aims to help community groups get involved in landcare by providing funds of up to $500 that can go towards the cost of running an event or project that benefits the community and the environment. South Coast NRM Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr Justin Bellanger said, “I’m delighted that we can support our regional groups to run events that will ultimately make a real difference to our environment and build resilience in our communities” “The Community Small Grant Programme provides monetary support for on-ground works that the community itself has driven.” Caitlin Jackson, acting regional landcare facilitator for South Coast NRM, encouraged not-for-profit groups, sports clubs, recreation groups, associations or schools within the South Coast region to apply. “We would love to see our local communities taking advantage of this opportunity to benefit the environment we all enjoy using” she said. “Projects and events could include a weeding bee at your local reserve, a beach rubbish pickup, tree planting at your local sports ground, or even a fauna or flora survey.” Application forms are available on the South Coast NRM website. Applications close 22nd February 2016 and projects must be completed by 30 April 2016. For further information, visit www.southcoastnrm.com.au. The research found that low-fat dairy was not associated with any additional health advantages when compared to full-fat products. Research recently published in the journal Nutrients found that full-fat dairy may be just as beneficial for cardiovascular health. Dr Therese O’Sullivan from ECU’s School of Medical and Health Science examined the eating habits of 860 WA teenagers from early to late adolescence. “We have long been recommending people eat lowfat dairy on the assumption that because it has less calories and less saturated fat it is healthier for you, but there was very little out there in terms of good evidence that this is the case,” she said. “When we examined the cholesterol profile of these teenagers we found that those who ate more low-fat dairy were no better off,” she explained. “In fact, we were able to show that for teenage boys, full-fat dairy consumption was associated with a slightly better cholesterol profile than low-fat dairy.” Dr O’Sullivan said that the researchers also examined the waist to height ratio of the teenagers in the study to evaluate obesity and found no link between the type of dairy eaten and obesity. “Given that it has less calories per serve, it was assumed that low-fat dairy would help children and teenagers maintain a healthy weight, but we found that neither low-fat nor regular fat products increased risk of obesity. “This could be because children and teenagers are actually quite good at regulating their food intake, so eating full-fat dairy makes them feel more full, potentially reducing their consumption of other foods, but this is something that requires further research.” Walpole Weekly February 10, 2016 - 11 My Weekly social Post your photos on the web or social media #mywalpoleweekly Helen Pierce enjoys afternoon tea at the Seniors Computing Club.
