10 Oct 2014 Issue 5 - Edmonton County School
Issue 05
Autumn Term
Friday 10th October 2014
Dear Parents and Carers,
Last week I told you that we have been informed by Unison, GMB and Unite Trade Unions
that there will be a day of strike action on Tuesday 14th October 2014. The dispute is
with regards to the rejection of the level of Local Government Pay award for support staff.
I have assessed the possible impact of this action at our school and have decided that
the school will be open as normal.
However, because of the action of members of these unions the following services may
be affected:

There will be some teaching assistants who are striking so your child may not have
the usual support in class;

Food services will operate but may be limited;

The office and administration systems will be operating on a reduced service so
it would be appreciated if calls were kept to a minimum. Any phone call may
take longer to answer. Emails will not be answered as we will prioritise
maintaining reception service.
We will endeavour to keep the school running as normally as possible but hope that
you appreciate that some services may not operate as well as usual.
The school will open as normal on Wednesday 15th October 2014.
Yours sincerely
Dr S M Tranter
Executive Headteacher

ART DEPARTMENT LINKS WITH
SAATCHI GALLERY
Having attended the Saatchi Gallery for several educational trips,
the Expressive Arts Faculty was given an opportunity to submit a
bid to take part in an Art project/workshop with the Saatchi
Gallery. Mrs Jimenez Head of Art put together a detailed
proposal last term and we were one of the fortunate schools that
were selected to take part. We are now arranging 2 free trips for our Able Gifted &
Talented Art students to go to the Saatchi gallery to take part in the project.
The project is sponsored by the Jack Petchey Foundation, The Princes Foundation for
the Children of the Arts and the Saatchi Gallery and will involve 6 other secondary
schools in Enfield.
As part of the project we are very lucky to have a professional artist Sarah Byers linked
to the school. As well as being with us on the gallery trips she will also come to the
school to do a workshop at both campuses with the students.
Sara Byers is a practising artist. She has a BA in Sculpture from
Camberwell School of Art and an MA in Fine Art from the Royal
College. She works with people of all ages and backgrounds in
Museums, Galleries and schools. Sara Byers enjoys using lots of
different ways of making art in order to inspire people, to get
involved and have fun with Art in all its various forms.
The students will also meet and interview one of the artists who are currently exhibiting
at the Saatchi gallery in the Pangaea II exhibition and take part in some workshop
activities. At the end of the project the work the students produce in their workshops
will be exhibited at the Saatchi gallery and a venue/exhibition space in Enfield, where
all the schools will present their work together. This is a great opportunity for our
students which we are very excited about.
There is also a website linked to the project and a blog page for each school which will
be updated by the artists as the project progresses – we will put the link to this on the
school website when it has been updated.
Please keep checking the newsletter for further updates on the progress of this
project .

Dynamic mathematics challenge day for year 8 students.
Last week twelve talented mathematicians from Year 8 were invited to participate in a
Maths challenge day at a local Enfield school.
The activities were all hands on and the students learnt about
the importance of communication skills and effective team work.
They enjoyed the puzzle activities that focused on achievement
rather than competition and the students were genuinely
challenged to solve puzzles by trying a range of strategies to
reach a solution.
This was highlighted by one student who said ‘We all enjoyed
the puzzles as they were confusing but it was fun to finish them
all’. Members of staff noted that all students were focused and
motivated for the whole time and they said it was lovely to see
different learning styles being catered for so that everyone had
a chance to show their own learning strengths.
