My Perspective by Deborah Divins, Executive Director
May has been such a
whirlwind, and it has
led us right into the
start of the County’s
high tourism season.
Celebrate Dorchester took
advantage of the region’s ripening
fields and waters’ bounties by
bringing the harvests directly to our
talented chefs, who took full
advantage of the fresh flavors as
they outdid themselves with their
culinary treats. Our nearly 200
members and guests were able to
partake in these delights from
thirteen Dorchester County
restaurants, as well as tastings from
our local brewery and winery.
Congratulations to our Business
Excellence Award winners Snip
Tuck, Dorchester Banner,
Protenergy Natural Foods, Johnny
Shockley of Hooper’s Island Oyster
Aquaculture, Julia Barker of Quota
International, and Dr. William E.
Bair! Having sat in on the award
committee meetings, it was
heartwarming to see how many
incredible people and businesses
this region possesses. Selecting
winners from among our amazing
nominees was a difficult process, but
every winner was absolutely
deserving of the honor! (See page 7
for more information).
Another wonderful event this May
was the Five-County Upper Eastern
Shore After-Hours Mixer that was
held at Chesapeake Community
College in Wye Mills. The College
was kind enough to sponsor, and
cater, this event – and they did a
wonderful job! This annual mixer
touted about 150 attendees, and was
an excellent opportunity to network
with other Upper Shore businesses.
Speaker Mat Palmer, Senior Vice
President of Government Affairs for
the Maryland Chamber, presented
current legislative trends impacting
Maryland businesses – despite his
wife being ready to go into labor
with their first child. Talk about
commitment to the industry!

“Business Building Blocks”
workshops, which began in May,
have been well received and will
continue on June 5, when we host
“Finding Your Financing,” a free
workshop for entrepreneurs and
existing business owners to help fill
the funding gaps that might
otherwise prevent a business startup, and to identify funding sources
for business expansions. Read
more about this great opportunity
as seen on the cover page!
As always, if you have any
business-related questions or
concerns, are seeking potential
resources, or just want to get to
know us better, feel free to visit,
call, or e-mail us. We will always
do our best to assist you.

Dorchester Winery Exceeds Production Goals
In effort to diversify the family agronomic operation, Joe and Laura Layton, their son
William – a third generation farmer – and his wife Jennifer chose to start a vineyard.
Less than five years since uncorking that first bottle of Layton’s Chance wine, the
business continues to thrive, exceeding production and distribution goals in 2013.
More than ‘value-added’ agriculture, Layton’s – like many wineries throughout the country – has become a thriving
destination for tourists and residents alike. At least 30,000 people have visited the Vienna operation to purchase wine,
tour the vineyards or attend one of their many festivals and special events.
Layton’s Chance Vineyard and Winery is the first farm in Dorchester County to expand into a winery. They offer a
nature trail, picnic area with outdoor games, happy hours on Friday nights and a summer concert series. The winery
also features an event room for rental. Co-owner Jennifer Layton added, “Dorchester County is a great place to have a
business, especially a family business. Everyone is so friendly and they appreciate the wonderful quality of life. There
is so much to do in Dorchester; it makes for great conversation when guests visit the winery!”
In effort to attract businesses, market and unify the county, the Dorchester County Economic Development office
developed the “water moves us” marketing campaign. This serves as the department’s brand identity as well as a
multi-platform, cooperative marketing campaign to promote Dorchester’s assets and opportunities. For more information on Layton’s Chance Vineyard and Winery, please visit laytonschance.com and remember to “Like” them on

Celebrate Dorchester 2014
The Chamber’s 5th Annual Celebrate Dorchester event was an evening of exceptional food, drink and
camaraderie. Regional producers were matched up with County restaurants to highlight both our local bounty
and talented chefs. The culinary adventure was joined by a silent auction and awards ceremony. Musician Pete
Baker provided the entertainment for the evening, treating attendees to his guitar-oriented early Rock and Roll
sound.

The 24th Annual ACES Program Project
Presentation & Dinner Meeting
We extend heartfelt thank you to the participating
businesses: UMCES Horn Point Laboratory, Delmarva
Community Services, UMSMC at Dorchester, Eastern
Shore AHEC, Provident State Bank and Cambridge
International. Thank you also to the teachers and staff who
participated in this year’s program, we are so glad that you
felt it was worthwhile. The presentations done expressed
wonderful ideas to better equip our students for a future in
the business community. The presentations were followed
by a delicious meal catered by DCTC.
Pictured from L-R First Row: Stephen Williams, Susan Todd (Provident State Bank), Phil Albert, Dirk Bayer, and Clark

The Dorchester Chamber of Commerce was host to this year’s 5 Chamber Regional
Mixer at Chesapeake College’s Caroline Building at Wye Mills. The event was attended by nearly 150 people from
Dorchester, Talbot, Caroline, Queen Anne’s and Kent Counties’ Chambers of Commerce. This was a wonderful
networking opportunity providing people with the chance to broaden their business horizon by opening up to contacts in
other communities. This year’s speaker was Matthew Palmer, from the Maryland Chamber of Commerce (who took
time to be with us even though he and his wife are expecting their first child at any moment). The college provided Hors
d’oeuvre’s, sodas, water, wine and beer. There were door prizes given, and a 50/50 raffle which benefitted Chesapeake
College. Pictured top right are winners from the Comfort Inn & Suites in Cambridge.
Trying to help get our community on the road to better health,
Chef Patrick Fanning, Jamie & Brett Summers opened
SQUOZE-A Healthy Carryout at 513 Gay Street, in the same
building with Bliss Jewelry. Official Grand Opening was
marked with a ribbon cutting on Friday, May 30th.
Squoze offers a menu full of natural, organic & healthy
alternative products, providing customers with made-to-order
juices, smoothies, shakes & more – ALL healthy. Well, except
the delicious orange cake from Elliott’s Baking Company that
was offered to all in attendance for the ribbon cutting. Squoze
opens at 8 am, 6 days each week, & offers happy hour specials
from 5-6 p.m.

produce, honey, flowers and more. Knives can be sharpened, crafts, and all while enjoying live music by
the JohnE Wa2C band.
