St. Bernard Parish/St. Philip The Apostle Parish Parroquia de San
St. Bernard Parish/St. Philip The Apostle Parish Parroquia de San Bernardo/Parroquia de San Felipe el Apóstol June 12 & 13, 2010 This past weekend was a “historymaking” time both for the Diocese of Green Bay and our Parish. On Saturday, June 5, José Antonio Castañeda was ordained as the first Latino priest in our Diocese. The ordination ceremony took place in the Cathedral with Bishop David Ricken officiating, accompanied by Bishop Morneau, Bishop Banks, Fr. Dave and some 50 priests from our Diocese as well as from other Dioceses of the U.S. and Mexico. In the presence of the entire assembly, José expressed his desire to carry out the responsibilities of priesthood in accord with the mind of Christ and of the Church under the direction of our Bishop. At the Eucharistic Prayer, Padre José took his place at the altar to concelebrate with the Bishops and Priests. At the end of the ordination celebration, Bishop Ricken announced that Padre José was being assigned as Parochial Vicar at St. Philip and St. Bernard Parishes. The lengthy applause of the Congregation clearly expressed approval and satisfaction with the assignment. Welcome, Padre José, to St. Bernard and St. Philip Parishes! We are so happy to have you with us! May your priestly ministry be filled with much joy and satisfaction as you daily live out the commitments you made at your ordination. S T . JUNE 12 & 13, 2010 A woman walked into the post office and, immediately, the postmaster, noticed the new earrings her husband had given her. “Those must be real diamonds,” he said. “Yes,” the woman replied. “How could you tell?” “Because,” he said, “no one buys fake diamonds that small.” As we return to non-feast Sundays in the liturgical cycle, we are immediately thrust into the real Jesus, where there is nothing fake about his person or his message. He welcomes sinners, accepts their gifts, and shares his forgiveness, all during the course of a big dinner. “What a touching story,” one thinks, yet what makes it even more touching is that, as we gather around his table for a truly big meal (the Eucharist), the same dynamic is going on—we sinners are welcomed, our gifts are shared, and we are forgiven, healed, and sent on our mission. What a marvelous way to return to Ordinary Time (we actually have been in it for two weeks but it didn’t seem like it because of the feast the last two weekends), for every time we approach God’s altar the same dynamic is at work. Thus, Ordinary Time is hardly the boring time of the church year, for who can get tired of God welcoming our gifts, forgiving our sins, and inspiring us to greatness as we go about our daily lives? Plus, school’s out. How great is that! Blessings on our daily lives, Scrip will be sold from the parish office for the summer. We will sell from 8-3 Monday - Thursday. Spring And Summer Celebrations! Save Those Pop Can Tabs For Haiti! As you celebrate those special occasions, please “pop” off the tabs on your beverage containers, save them, and place them in the appropriate drawer in the back of church or drop them off in the parish office. The money generated from the tabs goes toward helping our Haiti Mission. Thank you for your help! New Church Envelopes Please pick up your new church envelopes in back of church as this will help defray the cost of mailing them. Important Note: Starting July 1st - please be sure to use only your new envelopes. Also, it would be greatly appreciated if you would always put your name on each envelope. Thank you for your cooperation! Hospitality Table and Statue of St Philip Have you seen our new “Hospitality Table” and “Statue of St Philip” in back of church? Both are new additions and add a nice touch to our newly redecorated church. The statue was donated by a very generous parish member who insisted we have a statue of St Philip inside as well as outside the church. The Hospitality Table was designed in conjunction with our Catholics Come Home Campaign as one more way we can extend our hospitality. It was constructed by Mike Eggert in the same style as the other furnishings in the church area. With these new additions we now have a statue by the vigil candles… and a hospitality area where we can offer complimentary copies of the Compass, Scrip forms, ministry information and sign-up forms, visitor information and more. Both are beautiful and functional additions to our church! Thank you… To the 9 kind souls who helped change over the new missalettes in church for Ordinary Time. The efficient crew had their job completed in no time at all. Thanks again for your help! Request Please be sure to write your name on your contribution envelope, especially when giving cash. While appointments are preferred, walk-ins are welcome. GRACE System Employees Ten Principals Starting July 1, 2010 As part of the transition plan for parish schools to become part of the Green Bay Area Catholic Education (GRACE) System, the ten principals of Catholic schools in the Green Bay area will become employees of GRACE starting July 1, 2010. The principals have been meeting as a GRACE Leadership Team during this past year and have been setting and meeting goals to make our schools stronger and more united. In order to have better profiles of our schools, each principal and a team of teachers will participate in a Data Retreat® workshop conducted at Notre Dame Academy on June 17-18. Dr. Judy K. Sargent, Director of School Improvement Services at Cooperative Educational Service Agency 7 (CESA 7), will facilitate the event. Test scores in reading, math and science [if available] will be analyzed as will attendance, discipline, school perceptions based on surveys [if available]. Other data may be included as the school profile is created. The purpose of the Data Retreat® workshop is to create hypotheses about the data and move to the creation of goals that will improve the school in the most significant areas. The team takes the information gleaned from the data and the goals that were established back to the remainder of the teachers and school staff as an introduction to the new school year 2010-11. Stewardship has the power to shape and mold our understanding of our lives and the way in which we live. P AG E 6
