Construction Begins on New Off-Campus Student Housing Center in Jacksonville, Fla. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (August 28, 2014) – Leaders in the Jacksonville Catholic community and University of North Florida officials broke ground Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014 on the off-campus Newman Student Housing Center, designed by Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood, Inc. (GMC). The new faith-based housing center, located on Alumni Way next to the current Catholic Student Center, is slated to open in fall 2015. The project is being privately-funded by the Diocese of St. Augustine and the Newman Student Housing Fund (NSHF), which is a company dedicated to building faith-based living communities attached to, or in close proximity to, Catholic Campus Ministries and Newman Centers already established on college campuses across the country. Students do not have to be religious to live in the Newman Student Housing Center, which will be open to students of all faiths from UNF, Jacksonville University and Florida State College at Jacksonville. Officials expect a majority of occupants to be UNF students because of the proximity to campus. The first stage of the three-story complex will hold 204 students in a mix of one-bedroom, two-bedroom and four-bedroom apartment-style units. Lounges, study retreats and space for a priest’s office will also be located within the 75,000 squarefoot center. The second phase of the project is expected to hold an additional 158 students. Other NSHF campuses that are currently open include, St. Thomas Aquinas Newman Hall at Texas A&M UniversityKingsville in Kingsville, Texas; Mary Star of the Sea Newman Hall at the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Fla.; and Troy Newman Hall at Troy University in Troy, Ala., which was also designed by GMC.
