District Profile
The Southwest Technical Education District of Yuma (STEDY), a Joint Technical Education
District (JTED), was approved by a vote of local citizens in 2014 pursuant to Arizona Revised
Statutes 15-392. The District began organized operations in January of 2015 with governance
by a local five member Governing Board. Administrative duties are being coordinated by the
Yuma County School Superintendent on an interim basis and until a Superintendent is hired by
the Board.
The Governing Board and the community is enthusiastic about the opportunities STEDY
presents students in the District. The formation of this JTED is a major step toward providing
students superior opportunities to prepare for careers and higher education in fields related to
career and technical education. The District currently has authority to work with three wellestablished educational institutions in the area. Members of the JTED are Arizona Western
College, Yuma Union High School District, and Antelope Union High School District.
Arizona Western College is a public community college that offers classes throughout the
southwest region of Arizona. Founded in 1963, the College serves a student population of over
8,000 who have the opportunity to study in a wide range of academic and career fields. The
mission of the College is: Arizona Western College offers educational, career, and lifelong
learning opportunities through innovative partnerships which enhance the lives of people in
Yuma and La Paz counties.

Yuma Union High School District serves a student
population of over 10,000 students who have
primarily completed their elementary school years in
Crane ESD, Gadsden ESD, Somerton ESD, and
Yuma ESD. The District is comprised of six high
schools. District course offerings include career and
technical education programs for students in grades
10 through 12 that are designed to address the
knowledge, skills and behaviors all students need to
live, plan, and work successfully in today’s society.

Antelope Union High School serves
approximately 300 students from Wellton,
Arizona and the surrounding area. The District
has a long tradition of excellence and enjoys
strong parent and community support. The
District is committed to the success of its
students. Curriculum offerings include a full
range of academic programs including career
education programs and dual enrollment
classes with Arizona Western College.
Antelope Union High School’s District’s Mission
is: To provide a quality education that ensures
all students meet the expected standards and
graduate with the knowledge and skills to
succeed in life.
Collaboration between STEDY, the College,
and the two high school districts will enhance
and strengthen career and technical education
programs to better meet the needs of students.
This collaboration will ensure that students will
experience an effective transition from high
school CTE programs to advanced, post-high
school CTE along with other higher education
opportunities, and careers.

Salary and Contract Terms
Compensation for this position will range from
$90,000 to $110,000. The successful
candidate’s specific compensation will be
determined during contract negotiations and be
based on professional preparation and
experience.

The Yuma community is located in southwest
Arizona and has a metropolitan statistical area
population estimated, by the United States Census
Bureau, at over 200,000. The City of Yuma, alone,
has a population that exceeds 93,000.
This
geographic region of the state has a rich tradition
dating back to the first Native Americans who thrived
along what is known now as the Colorado River.
The river runs along the west side of the City and
serves as the geographic boundary between Arizona
and California.
Gila Ridge High School: Yuma UHSD
Europeans first arrived in the region in 1540 and Yuma was initially recognized on maps of New Spain in
1774. Early development was enhanced because Spanish explorers found that there was a natural river
crossing that allowed convenient passage from one side of the river to the other. This geographic
feature became known as the Yuma Crossing which has served as a primary passage point across the
river to this day.
With its roots firmly established adjacent to the river, the Yuma community has a growing multicultural
population that embraces a rich heritage. Community members along with visitors enjoy the region’s
world-class golf courses and recreation opportunities such as hiking and mountain biking, as well as
boating and fishing on the Colorado River. Tours of the Marine Corps Air Station and the Yuma Proving
Ground are two favorite activities of visitors. The Yuma community is known for its agriculture. Scenic
drives throughout the community will take a person through citrus orchards, peanut farms, cattle
ranches, produce farms, cotton fields and date orchards. The 665,400-acre Kofa National Wildlife
Refuge, established in 1939, is located 40 miles north of the City of Yuma. The Refuge consists of both
desert and mountain topography which serve as home to bighorn sheep, desert tortoise, desert kit fox,
and a number of indigenous bird species. Also found in the Yuma community are the Imperial National
Wildlife Refuge and the Cibola National Wildlife Refuge.

Superintendent Profile
The Governing Board of the Southwest Technical Education District of Yuma is seeking its first
Superintendent. The Board recognizes the challenges that face the District as it begins to carve its
place in the Yuma community. The Board seeks a person who is prepared to meet these challenges
resulting in the establishment of an educational organization that offers relevant and quality programs to
the students it serves.
The Board will evaluate applicants based on the following:
 Current Arizona Superintendent Certificate (preferred)
 Experience in Career and Technical Education (preferred)
 Knowledge of the operations of a Joint Technical Education District


Public school experience (preferred)
Past experience in a leadership role

The Southwest Technical Education District of Yuma has engaged the services of the Arizona
School Boards Association to direct a search for qualified candidates. Each finalist chosen will
visit the district at his/her expense to be interviewed by the Governing Board. Governing Board
members may visit the communities of selected candidates as part of the final selection process.
To receive consideration, an applicant's file must be completed by April 20, 2015 (12:00 noon
Arizona Time) and must contain:
