Introduction – Highlights of the auction
This catalogue presents important books and manuscripts from a variety of private
properties in a wide range of fields: incunabula, natural science, architecture, travel,
topography, art, fiction and philosophy.
The auction opens with a selection of fine books originating
from the library of the Scandinavian Society in Rome which
includes rare topographic works of Italy, Egypt and Scandinavia,
and some highly attractive presentation copies by the Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen.
Another famous Norwegian author, Knut Hamsun is represented with a large collection of letters and a central archive of
material concerning the trial against the author caused by his
pro-German conviction. The archive is of great importance and
includes the hitherto secret diary which Hamsun wrote during
his stay at the Retspsykiatrisk Klinik in Oslo. There is no doubt
that this material will influence the rather sensitive discussion
about Hamsun’s political position during World War II and perhaps change the public opinion of the celebrated author.
Among the many letters and manuscripts we feature a historical
letter, dated June 1719, written in the hand of the Norwegian
naval hero Peder Wessel Tordenskjold on board the ship “Laaland” fighting against the Swedish army. Also to be highlighted
are two autograph quotations signed by Leonora Christina and
Corfitz Ulfeldt. The quotations forecast the destiny of the powerful couple and are of historical interest.
Special attention should be brought to a fine collection of
personal letters by famous artists living in Paris during the first
decades of the 20th century including Monet, Stravinsky, Proust,
Cocteau and Diaghilev (see article on pages 138-139). Furthermore, we present a large collection of more than 400 volumes
published by ”The Olympia Press” during the 1950’s and 1960’s
in Paris (see arcticle on pages 148-149).
The rare first edition of Saxo Grammaticus’ chronicle of the Danish kings printed in Paris 1514 is presented in a fine copy from
the library of the Danish artist Vilhelm Hammershøi. In addition,
we present several Bibles from the Ragnar Fjalar Larusson Collection including the King Gustav Vasa’s Bible printed in Uppsala
1540-41, the first Bible to be printed in Scandinavia.
To be mentioned in connection with the Bibles is the well preserved copy of an early 16th century Koran in a rare and unusual
octagonal format measuring only 6 x 6 cm. The illuminated
Koran is dated 1513 and it consists of 362 leaves.
The auction features several fine Russian works: An illuminated
liturgical manuscript written in Church Slavonic (254 leaves)
in a fine Russian binding, a complete set of N. Kutepov’s “The
Imperial Hunt in Russia” (1896-1911), and a rare set of V. Timm’s
famous “Russian Leaves of Art” (1859-1862).
Several of the books here presented are included in the presti
gious publication ”Printing and the Mind of Man”, including
”Das Kapital” by Marx, ”Disquisitiones arithmeticae” by Gauss,
”On Liberty” by Mill, ”Laokoon” by Lessing, ”Geschichte der Kunst
des Alterthums” by Winckelmann, and ”Histoire Naturelle” by
Buffon.
No book auction in Copenhagen without Hans Christian Andersen. This time we highlight the rare German edition of Andersen’s
tales illustrated by Petit (1845) and Andersen’s own dramati
zation of “The Sandman” (1850). Both copies are inscribed to his
friend, the dancer and choreographer, August Bournonville .
The auction closes with the sale of the enigmatic artwork “Still
Life with stuffed Owl” by Karen Blixen. She painted the poetic
canvas in Kenya in 1923 for her companion, Denys Finch Hatton
and since then the famous painting has been in the possession
of the Blixen family. The painting complements her literary
achievement “Out of Africa”, the much admired memoir of her
years in Kenya.
On the last pages of the catalogue we present the collection
of the Danish author and multi-artist, Rune T. Kidde, which is
to be sold at our online auction 7 December 2008 along with
books from other properties. Considering this collection to be of
specific interest to a Danish audience, all descriptions are here in
Danish including the article on page 161 (translations available
on request).
We hope you will take an interest in the catalogue and visit us at the auction either in
Bredgade or online.

The trial against Knut Hamsun
- Important archive
Comprehensive archive with material concerning
the trial for treason against the Norwegian author
Knut Hamsun. The archive consists of a secret
dairy written by Hamsun when he was confined
for several months in a psychiatric hospital in Oslo
after World War II. The diary is written with small
letters on three pages in his Danish son-in-law
Hans Andreasen’s novel “Manana” (1945). The
achive also contains 7 autograph letters and two
post cards signed by Knut Hamsun written in the
period 1944-1947 together with 6 autograph letters signed by Marie Hamsun written in the period
1950-1953. All the letters are written to Hamsun’s
daughter Cecilia and her husband Hans Andreasen.
In all more than 20 pages.
26
Moreover, the archive contains various typewritten
transcripts, including Hamsun’s speech in court,
dated 16 December 1947, a letter from Hamsun
to the Public Prosecutor [no date] and a report by
the police concerning the confiscation of Hamsun’s private correspondence, dated 11 December
1945.
The archive also contains several original photographs of Hamsun, family members and his farm
“Nørholm”, various private papers and letters concerning the prolonged trial, together with other
collectable items of documentary interest.

This hitherto inaccessible,archive documents several
central aspects of the last years of Knut Hamsun’s life
and the rough years after World War II when the 90
years old Nobel Prize winner was arrested, stood trial
for treason and convicted.
Not only the diary, which was secretly written from
15 October 1945 to 11 February 1946, but also the
letters written to Hamsun’s daughter Cecilia, constitute a strong documentation for the trial against the
disgraced author. The letters show how Hamsun is not
allowed to decide anything for himself. He awaits his
trial, and he makes no secret of the fact that it gives
him pain.
This important archive - not least the diary - was
used as source material for the Danish author
Thorkild Hansen’s work “Processen mod Hamsun”
(“The Process against Hamsun”, 1978) and has
hitherto been kept away from the public by the family
of Hamsun’s son-in-law, the Danish author Hans
Andreasen.

Knut Hamsun – Important autograph letters
Collection of 5 autograph letters signed by Knut
Hamsun to the famous Norwegian vicar Jonas
Dahl. Dated Aas, Nordstrand and Drøbak [No year,
c. 1904-07]. Enclosed autograph letter from the
Norwegian Church department, dated 19 January
1907.
The letters deal with Hamsun’s strong wish for a
renewal of the Norwegian psalm book.
Jonas Dahl (1849-1919) was a vicar in Ullern in Oslo
and he contributed with several psalms for the Norwegian psalm book. Hamsun was strongly concerned
with a renewal of the Norwegian psalm book and
was convinced that Dahl was the only one capable
of lifting this task. In the letters Hamsun mentions
the psalm book as being the only poetry and book of
sermons for the common people.
Provenance: Private Norwegian collection. Please
note that this item is imposed with export prohibition from Norway by the National Library in Oslo. The
National Library has rejected our application to have

Man
reviderer Bibelens Sprog, Kirkebønnernes Sprog osv.
men lader Salmerne staa.
Knut Hamsuns verk”. Eftersyn efter aftale.

Hammershøi - Important autograph letter
Autograph letter signed by V. Hammershøi to

Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916) writes to his friend
and colleague Alexander Wilde (1855-1929) about
his art and his difficulties of getting his paintings
finished. He comments on Paris, on J.F. Willumsen and

love i retfærdighed. Den havde direkte indflydelse på
lovgivningsarbejdet i Sverige, Preussen og Rusland i
1700-tallet.
sit bogtrykkeri i 1682.
omfang og udstyr ragede højt op over tidens øvrige
typografiske frembringelser.

“A landmark in
the history of natural science”
Buffon: Histoire Naturelle [...]. 32 volumes. Paris:
Imprimerie Royale 1749-89. 4to. 1st edition.
With 1045 full page engravings mainly depicting
animals, 2 maps and 2 charts. The set comprises
the following sections: 15 volumes “Histoire
Naturelle Générelle”, 9 volumes “Histoire Naturelle
des Oiseaux”, 2 volumes of “Histoire Naturelle
des Quadrupèdes Ovipares et des Serpens” and 6
supplementary volumes. Minor foxing. Bound in
contemporary, uniform full calf. Bindings with
minor signs of wear. (32)
First edition of one of the landmarks of popular
natural science. Georges Louis Leclerc Buffon (17071788) had an enormous impact on the study and
education of natural history. His “Historie Naturelle”
describes everything known about the natural world
and was published in several editions. This set is
the first edition and contains all volumes published
during Buffon’s lifetime. After his death several other
volumes were published making the total number of
volumes 44.
“Buffon’s “Natural History, General and Particular”
presented for the first time a complete survey of
natural history in a popular form [...] he was the first
to present the universe as one complete whole and
to find no phenomenon calling for any but a purely
scientific explanation” (“Printing and the Mind of
Man” # 198).
Together with Diderot’s Encyclopedia, this work is the
peak of book printing of the French enlightenment.
Buffon was the first to sum up an entire natural
history, based on science instead of theology. In a
part of the work, named “Des Époqeus de la Nature”
(Supplement vol. V, 1778, present here), Buffon
attacked several Christian doctrines on natural
science: He saw man as a part of the animal world,
he objected to earth being only 6000 years old, and
he dismissed a rigid classification system (thus
preparing for Darwin’s thoughts).
Reference: “Printing and the Mind of Man” # 198.
Nissen # 672.
Provenance: Most volumes bear the autograph name
of the Danish zoologist Jonas Collin (1840-1905),
who issued a new edition of Kjærbølling’s “The Birds
of Scandinavia” in 1875-1877 (Anker # 251) - a work
most likely inspired by his knowledge from his copy
of Buffon’s “Histoire Naturelle”.

Imaginative account of the North
Pierre Martin de La Martinière: Voyage de pais

Lappons [...]. Paris 1671. Small 8vo. With engraved
frontispiece and 14 engravings in the text. One
tear in one leaf expertly restored. Name on titlepage and autograph note on flyleaf concerning
the author of the book, stating that he was the
first French to have published a maritime journey
of Europe. Minor foxing. Bound in full calf with
all edges gilt (Thomas).
First edition of this rare and important source in the
history of travel. Based upon an expedition that Pierre
Martin De La Martinière (1634-90), born in Rouen,
had undertaken to the far North in 1670, his travel
narrative became one of the most famous of its kind.
The author relates (and illustrates himself) of strange
sights and sounds and the wind magic of the northern
people. His narration is one of the most fantastic and
imaginative of the time, so imaginative that Knud
Leem (1696-1775) specifically aimed at correcting
Martinière in his monumental work “Beskrivelse over
Finmarkens lapper” (1767), see lot # 4000.

A 4000 year old receipt for beer
Cuneiform tablet recording a receipt for beer for
the troops. Tablet dated 5th year of Shu-Shen, King
of Ur (2028-2004 BC) = 2024 BC. 4 x 4,5 cm.
The writing system called “cuneiform” (“wedgeshaped”) was developed by the Sumerian people
during the late fourth and fifth milleniums BC. The
writing system grew out from a series of pictures to a
system of symbols designating ideas and even sounds.
The signs were written on wet clay with a stick and
the tablets were used to record various information.
In this case the cuneiform tablet records a receipt for
beer for the troops.

of Fredensborg Castle after drawings by the grea

Tordenskjold - Highly important letter
Autograph letter signed by Tordenskjold. Dated
[June] 1719. 4 pages. Framed. Full transcription in
Danish available on request.
This highly important letter is written in full by the
Norwegian naval hero Peder Wessel Tordenskjold
(1691-1720) on board the ship “Laaland” fighting
against the Swedish army. The letter is written to
“Høyedle og welborne Herr Admiral” [Admiral Ole
Judichær] and contains important information about
the conquering of Göteborg: “Jeg kand slutte af eders
langt merre pragticabel att erobre; thi naar Hising
landet først i Poseseion bliver taget, er Resten en
meget pragticabel sag.”
Of great interest is also that Tordenskjold mentions a
map of his own invention on which he has marked his
personal suggestions for an attack.
It is extremely rare to see autograph letters by
Tordenskjold on the market. Most letters are in public
collections. This letter is of particular rareness since it
- probably due to its important content - was written
in full by Tordenskjold and not just signed by him as it
was custom.
Provenance: The letter was registered by the Norwegian marine historian O. Bergesen in 1963 (Bergesen:
“Tordenskiolds Brev”, Oslo 1963). Bergesen had never
seen the letter, but he knew of its existence from
an account by the Danish historian C.F. Allen who
stated that the letter was owned by J.H. Petersen, the
private teacher of King Fr. VII’s children. Petersen had
a fine collection of historical items which included
Tordenskjold’s letter. Until now the letter has been in
the ownership of the Petersen family.

Laurits Tuxen - Autograph letters
Collection of 18 autograph letters (15 with the
orig. envelopes) signed by Lauritz Tuxen to
Frederikke Tuxen. The letters are sent from Paris,
London, Edingburgh and Copenhagen between
1912-1921. The letters comprise more than 40
pages.
These very personal letters from the Danish painter
Laurits Tuxen (1853-1927) are written to his Norwegian second wife Frederikke. The letters relate of his
art, his teaching and of his colleagues, friends and
family. Extrait of one of the letters to Frederikke:
“Min elskede Fredemor!

J.F. Willumsen – J. Wilhjelm
- Autograph letters
Collection of 30 autograph letters signed by the
Danish artist J.F. Willumsen to the artist Johannes
Wilhjelm, including two letters sent to Wilhjelm’s
wife. Mostly dated from 1928-1938. The letters
comprise more than 50 pages. Enclosed collection
of 40 autograph letters and lettercards signed by
Wilhjelm to his son, including 3 letters written by
his wife, 50 photographs, and two sketch books
with drawings in pencil by Johs. Wilhjelm.
J.F. Willumsen (1863-1958) was one of the pioneers
in the modern breakthrough in Danish art at the turn
of the 19th century. Willumsen lived most of his life
in France, but he closely followed the work of his
colleague, the artist Johannes Wilhjelm (1868-1938)
of whom he painted a portrait. Wilhjelm, in return,
painted a portrait of Willumsen (1930, in the collection of ARoS). In his letters to Wilhjelm, Willumsen is
very informative of his own art and life, relating of his
personal art collection (Giotto, Donatello, Watteau),
his travels and difficulties finding stable male models,
his efforts to establish a museum of his own art in
Denmark and his love story with Michelle Bourret. He
also comments on his own letters and demands one
of them destroyed.

Christen Dalsgaard - Christian Winther
Collection of 8 original drawings in ink and pencil
by Christen Dalsgaard. All signed and dated 1845.
Each measuring 15 x 20,5 cm. Framed. Enclosed
Christian Winther: Træsnit. Copenhagen 1871.
First illustrated edition. Bound in full paper. (9)
The drawings were executed by the Danish artist
Christen Dalsgaard (1824-1907) as illustrations for
Christian Winther’s (1796-1876) poem “Christen og
Lene” from his popular work “Træsnit” (first issued in
1828). The drawings were never used, but in 1871 an
illustrated edition of “Træsnit” was published with
two other illustrations by Dalsgaard.
96
Dalsgaard’s illustrations for Christian Winther’s
poem are central for his artistic point of view. Like his
contemporaries Julius Exner and Frederik Vermehren,
Dalsgaard painted primarily national romantic folk
scenes rooted in the grasslands of Denmark. He was a
storyteller and paid great attention to folk costumes,
manners and habits of the people.

Peters Jul
- Important presentation copy and letter
Johan Krohn: Peters Jul. [1866]. 1st edition.
Illustrated and partly hand-coloured by Pietro
Krohn and Otto Haslund. Inscribed by the author.
Original wrappers, spine strengthened. Housed
in box. Enclosed one autograph letter signed by
the author, Johan Krohn, giving highly important
bibliographic information about the book. (2)
Presentation copy of the first edition of the most
famous children’s book in Denmark with the celebrated first verse: “Jeg glæder mig i denne Tid!/ Nu
falder Julesneen hvid”. The book was the work of three
men, the brothers Johan (1841-1925) and Pietro
Krohn (1840-1905) and their friend Otto Haslund
(1842-1917), describing the Christmas traditions in
the home of the Krohn family. Today, the book is only
known in around 20 surviving copies, most of which
are in public libraries.
The book is inscribed by the author to his youngest
brother, Mario (1846-72) who died at an early age.
The inscription sounds: “Til Kemikeren, Fysikeren,
Botanikeren, Zoologen mm.
Forf.”
98
After his brother’s death, Johan Krohn got his book
back and preserved it carefully throughout the years.
After nearly 50 years he decided to grant it to Paul
Michélsen (1881-1957), a well-known Danish silversmith, together with the letter here enclosed.
The letter is dated June 4, 1921, and relates of the
history of the book: “Den udkom 1866; billederne
er dels tegnede af min broder, dels af Otto Haslund;
(Transcription
available on request).
Both the letter and the inscription to his younger
brother (given to him at the time of publication)
document that Johan Krohn - contrary to previous
assumptions - in fact was quite proud of his book.

Leonora Christina and Corfitz Ulfeldt
- Historical quotations
Two autograph quotations from a poetry album
dated and signed by Leonora Christina and Corfitz
Ulfeldt: “Dieu console mon Âme et conforte mon
Coeur”. Signed Leonora Christina and dated Royen,
May 1645. + “Tout le monde est une farce”.
Signed Corfitz Ulfeldt and dated København, May
1641. The leaves are octagonal and measure 13,5
+ 11,5 cm. (2)
Countess Leonora Christina (1621-1698), was the
daughter of King Christian IV of Denmark and wife
of Count Corfitz Ulfeldt (1606-1664). Both were important persons and had great power. After the death
of King Christian IV in 1648, King Frederic III wanted
to reduce the influence of the couple and he claimed
Ulfeldt for treason. Ulfeldt fled the country together
with Leonora to Sweden. Five years later, Leonora
visited Denmark hoping that she and Ulfeldt could
reconcile with King Frederic III but she was refused
admission and expelled from the country. Hereafter,
Leonora followed Corfitz Ulfeldt who fought with the
Swedes and Karl X Gustav against Denmark.
In 1663 Ulfeldt was condemned to death in absentia
by the Danish gouvernment because of treason, and
Leonara Christine was accused of being a part of
the crime. She denied all guilt but without trial she
was imprisoned for the next 22 years in Copenhagen
Castle’s infamous Blue Tower (“Blåtårn”). Here she
wrote the posthumously published autobiography,
“Jammersminde”, written secretly during two decades
of solitary confinement.
The quotation by Leonora Christine is of historical
interest not least due to the fact that it is written
before she knew of her sad fate. Also the quotation
by Ulfelt is of particular interest seen in relation to
his fate. From other historical sources we know that
Ulfelt often used the quotation “Tout le monde est
une farce” and that he often added “... et se gouverne
par opinions”.
Provenance: The quotations were originally part of a
book of autographs collected by the Danish Bishop
Erik Eriksøn Pontoppidan who wrote the first Danish
grammar, “Grammatica Danica” (1668). Later, the
quotations have been in the collection of H.I. Andersen and in the Troensegaard Collection.

The English modernist theatre practitioner, Edward
Gordon Craig (1872-1966) worked as an actor, producer, director and scenic designer, and developed an

Craig’s idea of using neutral, mobile and nonrepresentational screens as a staging device became
extremely important for the symbolist theater and
is probably his most famous scenographic concept
together with his innovations in stage lighting.
Provenance: The letters were all sent to Craig’s Danish
friend Gorki Schultz who wrote a book (unpublished)
about Craig. The manuscript for the book is here
enclosed. The letters deal with the art and private life
of Craig.

Zola’s famous open letter in defense of captain Alfred
Dreyfus, a jew, who in 1894 had been convicted of
spying for the Germans and sentenced to solitary
confinement for life on Devil’s Island. The letter accuses the war office of concealing a grave miscarriage of justice. Zola was prosecuted and sentenced
for a year’s imprisonment, but he escaped to England
and his trial aroused further support for Dreyfus who
was pardoned in 1899, but not released until 1906.

xviii + 668 + [10] pages. With all tables and errata.
Bound with the original marbled wrappers (prof.
restored) in modern half morocco.
Fine copy of the first edition of Carl Friedrich Gauss’
(1777-1855) mathematical masterpiece which created a new epoch in the history of number theory. The
work is extremely rare in this condition.
“Gauss ranks, together with Archimedes and Newton
as one of the greatest geniuses in the history of
mathematics [...]. Gauss published his “Arithmetical
Disquisitions” at the age of twenty-four, an astonishing achievement, as it is considered to be a book that
begins a new epoch in mathematics, being a fundamental book in the modern theory of numbers.
126
Part IV contains a discussion of the theory of qua
dratic reciprocity, which Gauss had discovered at the
early age of eighteen; yet Euler and Legendre before
him had failed to prove it. His discovery of a method
of inscribing in a circle a regular polygon of seventeen
sides is described in Part VII - it was the first new
discovery of this kind in Euclidean geometry for over
two thousand years”.

Provenance: The book bears the autograph names (on
the inner front wrapper) of six scientific professors
from the University of Copenhagen, including H.C.F.
Schjellerup (1827-1887), Ludvig Oppermann (18171883), H.G. Zeuthen (1839-1920), and J.F. Steffensen

John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) defends the liberty of

mankind is justified in interfering with liberty of action is self-protection”.
First edition of one of the greatest books in political

Many of Mill’s ideas are now the commonplaces
of democracy. His arguments for freedom of every

H.C. Andersen - Philosophy of life

Christian Andersen. Dated Stuttgart 2 October
1860. Framed.
The quotation is a translation of the very same words
which his friend, the Danish physicist, Hans Christian
Ørsted, wrote in Andersen’s personal album on 21
April 1833:

H.C. Andersen: Ole Lukøie. Eventyr-Comedie i tre
Acter. Copenhagen: C.A. Reitzel 1850. 20 pages,
double-columned. Bound with original blue front
wrapper in full paperbinding.
Presentation copy inscribed to Bournonville of the
first edition of H.C. Andersen’s own dramatization
of his fairy tale of the same name “Ole Lukøie” (“The
Sandman”) published in his first circle of “Eventyr,
fortalte for Børn” (1842).
Indeed, it was not least due to his own dramatization that the tale of “The Sandman” became famous.
The fairy-tale play was performed 66 times at the
“Casino” theatre in Copenhagen. “Ole Lukøje” is one
of Hans Christian Andersen’s more obscure folk tales,
telling of a mysterious mythic creature “Ole Lukøje”
132
(meaning “eye-closer”) based on the folklore character of the Sandman (and most likely inspired by the
tale by E.T.A. Hoffmann), it gently takes children to
sleep and, depending on how good or bad they were,
shows them various dreams.
Inscribed by Hans Christian Andersen to his friend,
the Danish master of ballet, August Bournonville:

Autograph letter signed by Hans Christian Andersen to F.C. Klixbull. Dated 15 January 1870. 2

Hans Christian Andersen responds to some poems
sent to him by the young hopeful poet, F.C. Klixbull.

Princess de
– Music’s Modern Muse
The following pages present a highly
important collection of personal letters
by famous artists living in Paris during
the first decades of the 20th century
including Claude Monet, Igor Stravinsky,
Marcel Proust, Jean Cocteau, Serge
Diaghilev and many others.
Most of the letters here presented (lots # 41064110) are written to Winnaretta Singer, Princess Edmond de Polignac (1865-1943) who
was the heir to the famous Singer sewing
machine fortune and became an important
patron of the arts in the colourful Paris at the
beginning of the 20th century.
The letters all derive from the Danish family
of one of Winnaretta’s girlfriends, Sonia
Galpérine (c. 1885-1983) who was born
in Russia, but escaped to Paris during the
1917 revolution. Galpérine became close
friends with Winnaretta Singer, who allowed
Galpérine to live in her residence, 3 rue
Cortambert in Paris (today, the residence of
Fondation Singer-Polignac) until Galpérine’s
death.
A heaven for avant-garde
music – and for homosexuals
After the death of her father, Winnaretta
Singer inherited a substantial part of the
Singer Sewing Machine fortune, making her
a millionaire at the age of eighteen. Later,
she generously dedicated a great part of her
fortune supporting modernist music and
musicians like Debussy, Satie, Vincent d’Indy,
Stravinski, Gabriel Fauré, and Manuel de
Falla.
138
In 1893 at the age of 28 Winnaretta Singer
married the 59-year-old Prince Edmond de
Polignac (1843-1901), a homosexual amateur
composer who lived for the arts. Given that
also Winnaretta was attracted to members of
her own sex, but nonetheless desired to maintain the proper protocol, Edmond and Winnaretta agreed to a mariage blanc - a marriage
of convenience.
Behind the façade of her marriage, Winnaretta was involved in numerous affairs with
other women, both married and unmarried.
It is most likely that Winnaretta also had an
affair with Sonia Galpérine.
During the 1890’s and the early decades of
the 20th century, the home of Polignac be
came a celebrated salon in Paris frequented
by several like-minded avant-garde artists
including Marcel Proust, Jean Cocteau, Serge
Diaghilev, Gabriel d’Annunzio, and Colette.
Many of Proust’s memorable evocations of
salon culture in his monumental work “À la
recherche du temps perdu” were born during
his attendance at concerts in the Polignac
living room. First performances of Vincent
d’Indy, Claude Debussy, Gabriel Fauré, and
Maurice Ravel took place in the Polignac
salon.
The letters here presented document the
artists’ close relationship to the Princess de
Polignac, who continued to benefit the arts
all through her life.

Igor Stravinsky - Signed photographs
Igor Stravinsky: Chroniques de ma vie. Paris 1935.
Inscribed by Stravinsky to Mademoiselle Sonia
Galpérine. + Two photographs both inscribed by
Stravinsky to Sonia Galpérine. One with remnants
of prior mounting on verso. Studio Lipnitzki (8,5
x 13 cm) and Aladár Szêkely (12 x 8 cm). Enclosed
two amateur photographs, one depicting Stravinsky, the other Mlle Galpérine with a girlfriend.
Sonia Galpérine (c. 1885-1983) was born in Russia,
but escaped to Paris during the 1917 revolution.
Galpérine became close friends with Winnaretta
Singer, Princess Edmond de Polignac who allowed
Galpérine to live in Polignac’s residence, 3 rue Cortambert in Paris (today, the residence of Fondation
Singer-Polignac) until Galpérine’s death.
During the 1920’s and 1930’s Galpérine was included
in Winnaretta’s social circles, which counted Stra
vinsky, Proust, Monet, Debussy and many others.
Galpérine and Winnaretta shared much personal life,
which probably was the reason why Galpérine in
herited several of the Princess’ personal letters.

Marcel Proust - Autograph letter
Autograph letter signed by Marcel Proust. Dated
44 rue Hamelin [c. 1919/1920]. Sent to Princess
de Polignac (name erased and replaced by “Ma
dame”). 7 numbered pages on two large sheets,
each measuring 18 x 27,5 cm.
The letter is sent from 44 rue Hamelin, which was the
last place Proust lived (from 1919).
Marcel Proust (1871-1922) is best known for his
monumental work, “À la Recherche du Temps Perdu”
(“Remembrance of Things Past”) regarded by many as
the greatest literary work of the 20th century. At the
time of the letter Proust has just finished “À l’ombre
des jeunes filles en fleur”, the second volume of “À
la Recherche”, and he mentions his receipt of the
Goncourt Price.
144
Many of Proust’s memorable evocations of salon
culture in “À la Recherche” were born during his attendance at concerts in the living room of the Prince
and Princess de Polignac. In this letter he recalls
the time of Edmond de Polignac who died in 1901.
Proust was close friends of Polignac and frequented
the same circles. One of their shared friends was the
Comte Robert de Montesquiou, who is remembered
as a model for the Baron de Charlus in Proust’s “À la
Recherche”.

Edouard Manet: “Olympia” (1863). The nation of France acquired
the painting in 1890 with a public subscription organised by
Claude Monet. The letters here presented document the role
played by both Monet and the Princess de Polignac in the effort
to have Manet’s work placed in a public collection.

Claude Monet
- Letters dealing with Manet’s “Olympia”
Collection of 4 small autograph letters signed by
Claude Monet. The letters were all sent to “Madame” [Winnaretta Singer, Princess de Polignac]
and dated Giverny par Vernon 16 February 1890,
20 February 1890, 15 September 1908, and 13
June 1909. With holes from archiving.
It took Claude Monet more than a year to collect enough money to pay Madame Manet for her
husband’s painting. The scandal provoked by this
painting in 1865 was still remembered and it was
only reluctantly that the administration accepted the
donation.
The letters dated 16 and 20 February 1890 are both
dealing with Monet’s assistance buying the famous
painting “Olympia” (1863) from Edouard Manet’s
widow. The letters document the role played both by
Monet and the Princess de Polignac in the efforts to
have Manet’s epoch-making work of art represented
in the national collections. The letters also reveal how
much money the Princess Polignac contributed.

O
o l y mp i a press
lympia Press
In the 1950’s and 1960’s, Olympia
Press published a flood of titles with a
strongly erotic content. A number of
them were banned and seized. Today,
several of these books are considered
major works of literature.
In the first half of the 20th century, it was
still against the law to publish erotic or pornographic literature. It was also difficult to
have such works judged according to literary
or artistic criteria. The authorities seized what
could seem offensive, and the publishers were
afraid to publish daring literature for fear of
damaging their reputation.
An Enterprising Publisher
One publisher, however, dared breaking down
this wall: The Frenchman Maurice Girodias
(1919-1990), son of the publisher Jack Kahane (1887-1939), who in the 1930’s was the
first to publish writers such as Henry Miller,
Anais Nin and James Joyce at his colourful
Paris publishing house, Obelisk Press. In 1953
Girodias founded Olympia Press in Paris. The
publishing house was named after the French
artist Édouard Manet’s scandal-causing
painting of the courtesan Olympia.
Maurice Girodias was the ingenious type, and
his business methods were quite enterprising.
He would write blurbs for unwritten books.
He would then print a list of catchy titles and
fancy pen names and send it to all his cus
tomers. If these ”preliminary novels” had what
it took, his dealers would order and pre-pay
for works that had not yet even been written.
148
This way, he could afford to give advances to
the hard-pressed writers, who in turn would
come up with novels that fulfilled the expectations created by Girodias’ popular blurbs.
Literary Masterworks
Along with the easily read and soon forgotten erotic titles, Olympia Press published
works that came to rank among the most
important publications of the post-war era:
Donleavy’s The Ginger Man (1955), Burroughs’
focus
Nabokov’s novel, later adapted for the screen by
Stanley Kubrick, is about a middle-aged man’s
erotic obsession with his flirtatious, twelve year
old step-daughter. Subsequently, the word ”Lolita”
became a widely used term throughout Western
popular culture. Nabokov’s novel was Olympia Press’
greatest success ever.
“The Teasers” were small illustrated
pamphlets, issued illegal in 195354. The extremely rare pamphlets
contained teasing extraits from
the novels in Olympia’s “Travellor’s
Companion” series, including “The
Bedroom Philosophers” and “Justine”
by De Sade and “Plexus” by Miller.
The Naked Lunch (1959) and not least Nabo
kov’s masterwork Lolita (1955). Many publishers had rejected Nabokov’s novel, before it
was finally published by Girodias.
Lolita was highly controversial, and many
considered the book a questionable half-pornographic product without artistic merit. The
book was soon banned in France, but when
an American edition was published a few
years later, it became a huge success. Lolita
was the first title on the American market
since Gone with the Wind to sell more than
100,000 copies within the first three weeks.
Today, the importance of Olympia Press is
widely aknowledged, both in the history of
literature, publishing and pornography. Last
year Liverpool University Press issued the
definitive bibliography of all the publications
of Olympia Press. Much information in this
bibliography was supplied from the Copenhagen Collection here presented, owned by Finn
Edholm.

Large collection of more than 400 volumes published by “The Olympia Press”, mostly issued in
“The Traveller’s Companion” series. The collection also includes publications from “The Atlantic
Library”, “Othello Books”, “Collection Merlin”,
“Ophelia Press”, “The Odyssey Library”, “Ophir
Books” and “The Teaser Magazines”. Most volumes
unbound as issued, often with signs of use. More
than 70 vols. from “The Traveller’s Companion”
are bound mostly with original wrappers in full
green cloth by the Danish binder Ole Olsen. Itemized list is available upon request.
The Olympia Press was launched in Paris in 1953 by
Maurice Girodias. It published a mix of erotic novels
and avant-garde literary works including the first
printing of Vladimir Nabokov’s “Lolita”, William S.
Burrough’s novel “The Naked Lunch”, J.P. Donleavy’s
“The Ginger Man” and novels by Beckett. Most of the
major works, including the above mentioned titles,
are represented in first editions in the present collection. Most Olympia Press publications were issued as
“Traveller’s Companion” books, mostly numbered.

First edition of one of the most famous and controversial novels of the 20th century. Nabokov had
tried in vain to have his novel published by several
American publishers, but the novel was turned down
in fear of the repercussions of publishing such a
“pornographic” work.
152
The novel was finally published by Maurice Girodias
at the Olympia Press in Paris. The novel became both
a succes for Nabokov and Girodias, but caused a great
debate: The British government pressured the French
to ban the novel, and it was not published in America
until 1958.
Today, nobody argues its literary importance and its
popularity increased through the cinematic versions:
The 1962 Stanley Kubrick directed film starring James
Mason, Peter Sellers and Sue Lyon. And the 1997
Adrian Lyne remake starring Jeremy Irons.

The work “Still Life with Stuffed Owl” (1923) is much
admired and interpretated, not least because of the
enigmatic symbols of an owl and a chessboard.
4119
The enigmatic art of Karen Blixen
Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen): “Opstilling med Udstoppet Ugle” (Still Life with Stuffed Owl). Oil on
canvas, 41 x 61 cm. Executed in Ngong Hills 1923.
The painting has been exhibited several times and is
included in a number of books about Karen Blixen and
has been pictured on museum merchandise, such as
deck of cards, poster, and postcards.
Karen Blixen (1885-1962), the supremely gifted
Danish storyteller known under the pseudonyme Isak
Dinesen led one of the most exotic, compelling and
legendary lives in modern times. Her experiences
range across continents and her finely crafted work
spans the vast realms of the imagination.
Blixen’s visually strong artwork complements her
literary achievement. Educated privately at the
Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, she was a painter
of considerable skill and note. The painting “Still
Life with Stuffed Owl” is the only work in private
ownership. The remaining works are all owned by the
Rungstedlund Foundation and are on display at the
Karen Blixen Museum outside Copenhagen.
Painted at her estate at the foot of the Ngong Hills,
Kenya in 1923, this work of radiant colour and
harmonious line is a canvas of inspired beauty. Karen
Blixen was a woman of the world par excellence.
Her book “Out of Africa”, a much-admired memoir of
her years in Kenya, and one of the best prose pastoral
of our times reveals a near mystical love of Africa
and its people. Its poetic-like reminiscences of her
triumphs and her sorrows, the death of her companion Denys Finch Hatton (1887-1931), the scholarly
hunter and aviator, her love, mentor and muse and
the disappearance of the simple African way of life
she admired, spoke to readers, as well as to cinema
viewers, the world over.
Indeed, the painting, a visual rhapsody in blue, was
drawn for Denys Finch Hatton. After his tragic death
in a plane crash in Africa and upon Blixen’s return to
Denmark, the work reverted back to her family.
Blixen, Denmark’s most prominent writer of the 20th
century, was one of the most distinctive voices in
modern literature. She brought to the canvas the
same rich detail, sensuous spirit, and soaring imagination that made her the mistress of the written and
spoken word.
Provenance: Painted at The Karen Estate, Ngong Hills,
Kenya in 1923, this work was originally intended for
Denys Finch Hatton. After Denys’ death and on her
return to Denmark the painting was given to Ellen
Dahl, Karen Blixen’s sister. Until now the painting has
been in the ownership of the family.

It is possible to leave commission bids if you can not
be present at the auction yourself. This service is free
of charge.
When leaving a commission bid, you are instructing our
customer service to bid up to a specified amount on
your behalf.
The situation can occur that another buyer has already
bid the same as you were prepared to. Are you then
willing to bid further? If not the lot will be sold to
another buyer.
If you do not wish to exceed your bid then write “Max”,
for maximum, next to the amount. You can also allow
us to raise your bid by approx. 15% or approx. 25%.
The hammer price may be higher or lower than the
estimated price, so it is possible to buy below the estimate. Bruun Rasmussen will always buy at the lowest
price possible, as if you yourself had been present at
the auction.
All commission bids are strictly confidential.
Commission bids must be submitted no later than
24 hours prior to the start of the auction.
beløb i hammerslag.

§ 1. Bidding
The buyer shall be the highest bidder at the “hammer price”. Any
person bidding on behalf of a third party shall be liable in surety
for completion of the sale.
At the request of Bruun Rasmussen Kunstauktioner (hereinafter
called Bruun Rasmussen), all bidders, whether they wish to make
bids in person at the place of auction or commission bids by letter or fax or direct telephone bids, should be able to document
their ability to pay and be able to provide proof of identity at
any time. Bruun Rasmussen is entitled to refuse to accept a bid
if, when requested, adequate security or adequate payment on
account has not been rendered.
Bids should be made by the bidder in person at the place of auction or by written commission. Telephone bidding is possible
within certain conditions made out by Bruun Rasmussen. Bruun
Rasmussen is not to be held responsible for any errors that may
occur using this service. The auctioneer shall have absolute discretion as to the increment of the bids. The auctioneer will also
make decisions in all cases of doubt regarding the bidding
Credit/debit card information must be registered with Bruun
Rasmussen before bids can be submitted at our online auctions.
§ 2. Payment
The purchase price is the hammer price plus 25% in buyer’s premium, including VAT, for lots sold subject to the special VAT
scheme for sales of Works of Art, Collectors’ items and Antiques,
and secondhand goods by Public Auction (hereinafter called Special VAT).
Certain lots are sold in accordance with specific rules on normal
VAT arrangement (hereinafter called normal VAT), so that the
purchase price is the hammer price plus an additional 20% in
buyer’s premium and VAT of 25% levied on both the hammer
price and the buyer’s premium. The lots subject to Full VAT are
indicated as such in the catalogue with an asterix (*).
Danish VAT registered buyers shall provide Bruun Rasmussen with
documentation of their SE-/CVR-number (VAT No.) as this has to
be quoted on the invoice for goods bought at full VAT.
For some foreign buyers, specific VAT-exemption rules apply (cf.
Article 3). VAT-exemption does not apply to private buyers from
the EU who are considered as Danish buyers (cf. current Danish
legislation on Special VAT Scheme for Sales of Works of Art,
Collectors’ items and Antiques by Public Auction).
The purchase price falls due for payment when the goods have
been knocked down. Payment may be made in cash up to DKK
100,000, by Dankort, banker’s cheque, traveller’s cheque, Visa-,
Master-, Diners Club- or Eurocard. Personal foreign cheques may
only be used for payment by prior arrangement.
Payment may be made during or immediately after the auction.
Under all circumstances payment must be made no later than
eight days from the date of the invoice. With online auctions,
payment takes place when the items are prepared for dispatch
(circa 12 hours after the purchase has been made) using the
banking details (credit/debit card and bank account) submitted
by the purchaser. At the same time an invoice and dispatch information will be sent to the purchaser.
Should the purchase price not be paid by the due date, interest
at 1.5 % per new month will be charged.
If the purchase price and interest are not paid within eight
days after Bruun Rasmussen has sent its demand to the buyer,
Bruun Rasmussen shall be entitled to rescind the sale and resell
the goods at a Bruun Rasmussen auction or privately, and to
demand reimbursement of any related losses from the defaulting
buyer. Any further profit on the sale shall be payable to the person who had deposited the goods for sale by auction.
If the defaulting buyer is entitled to proceeds from a sale of
goods by Bruun Rasmussen, Bruun Rasmussen shall be entitled
to set off its receivables against its payables to the defaulting
buyer.
If the defaulting buyer has deposited other goods for sale,
Bruun Rasmussen shall be entitled to sell such goods at a Bruun
Rasmussen auction without being bound by the reserve stipulated by the defaulting buyer. The defautling buyer shall not be
entitled to demand the surrender of goods deposited for sale as
long as the debt payable to Bruun Rasmussen has not been dis-
178
*
charged, regardless of whether the value of such goods may be
deemed to exceed the debt payable.
Bruun Rasmussen shall be entitled to refuse a bid made by a
buyer who is in default in respect to his payment obligations
to Bruun Rasmussen, as well as a bid made by a third party on
behalf of such a defaulting buyer. Bruun Rasmussen shall further
be entitled to demand a deposit as a condition of accepting any
future bids from such a purchaser.
§ 3. Money-back guarantee
Online purchase of items by private individuals is subject to Danish consumer law, which extends 14 days of money-back guarantee. The purchaser is liable for any costs related to the transport
of returned items.
Should a purchaser seek to avail himself or herself of the moneyback guarantee, Bruun Rasmussen will refund the payment on
receiving the returned items. Please note that the date on which
accounts are debited is subject to the policy of the purchaser’s
bank/credit card company.
§ 4. Exemption from VAT
Foreign buyers who fulfil the conditions stated below shall pay
20% of the hammer price in buyer’s premium and shall not be
subject to Danish taxes and duties:
A. Buyers residing in another EU Member State:
Buyers are exempt from paying Danish VAT as long as they
have provided Bruun Rasmussen with documentation of their
VAT registration. The VAT number will then be quoted on
Bruun Rasmussen’s invoice.
B. Buyers residing outside the EU:
1 Dispatch through forwarding agent: Lots exported through a
forwarding agent approved by Bruun Rasmussen are exempt
from VAT.
2 Export as personal luggage: Goods may be exempt from Danish VAT when the buyer personally takes the goods out of the
country as luggage, provided the following conditions have
been met:
The invoice must have been paid and the Danish duty of 25%
of the invoice amount must have been deposited with Bruun
Rasmussen.
a Buyers residing in Norway will be refunded the Danish VAT as
soon as the invoice of sale has been returned to Bruun Rasmussen endorsed by the customs authorities of the country in
question or by any other authority with jurisdiction over matters of purchase tax with respect to official imports of goods
into the country in question if the purchase price exceeds DKK
1,200.
b Buyers residing in other countries outside the EU will be
refunded the Danish VAT after the goods have been presented
for customs clearance in connection with the departure of the
buyer from the EU. The exporter’s form should be returned
to Bruun Rasmussen after being endorsed with the customs
authorities’ export certificate if the purchase price exceeds
DKK 300 This also applies to the Faroe Islands and Greenland.
§ 5. Payment of taxes and duties
A. Buyers with VAT-registration in other EU member states who
do not wish to make use of Article 3 may instead choose to
purchase items subject to Special VAT/Normal VAT in the
same manner as private buyers. Bruun Rasmussen must be
notified of this before 10 a.m. on the following auction day.
B. Buyers with VAT-registration in Denmark may choose to purchase subject to Normal VAT at 25% of the hammer price plus
premium. Bruun Rasmussen must be notified of this before 10
a.m. on the following auction day.
§ 6. Collection of purchases
The purchase price must be paid in full before the purchased lot
can be passed over to the buyer. From the time of the lot being
knocked down to the buyer, until its collection, the purchased lot
BRUUN RASMUSSEN BOOK AUCTION 797
will be held at the buyer’s own expense and risk.
A storage fee will be charged for lots which have not been collected within 14 days after the time of the lot being knocked
down. Goods which have been paid for but not collected within 1
year will be resold at auction or privately at the buyer's expense.
§ 7. Dispatch
Should Bruun Rasmussen undertake the packaging and for
warding of purchased goods, this shall be done at the buyer’s
own expense and risk. Bruun Rasmussen shall thus not be held
liable neither for any damage caused to purchased goods during
dispatch nor for any missing consignments.
§ 8. Droit de Suite
Pursuant to current Danish legislation on Copyright, an artistic
royalty shall be collected on works of modern art by all Danish
and some foreign artists. Bruun Rasmussen will from the buyer
collect the royalties required on behalf of the artists’ organisation
Copy-Dan for any work of art subject to this law. These works are
identified in the catalogue by CD for Copy-Dan, marked beside
each relevant lot number.
The artistic royalty will be calculated as follows for each work of
art, when the hammerprice exceeds DKK 1,864:
• 5% of the part of the hammerprice ranging from DKK 0 to
DKK 310,729 plus the buyer’s premium (20% excl. VAT)
• 3% of the part of the hammerprice ranging from DKK 310,729
to DKK 1,242,917 plus the buyer’s premium (20% excl. VAT)
• 1% of the part of the hammerprice ranging from DKK
1,242,917 to DKK 2,175,104 plus the buyer’s premium (20%
excl. VAT)
• 0.5% of the part of the hammerprice ranging from DKK
2,175,104 to DKK 3,107,292 plus the buyer’s premium (20%
excl. VAT)
• 0.25% of the part of the hammerprice lying above DKK
3,107,292 plus the buyer’s premium (20% excl. VAT)
The artistic royalty cannot exceed DKK 93,219 for each work of art.
§ 9. Export licence
Applications for an export licence must be made to the Danish
Cultural Assets Committee when required in accordance with
current Danish legislation on the protection and preservation of
cultural assets in Denmark. Where such a licence has not been
obtained, the foreign buyer will be informed thereof immediately after the lot has been knocked down to the buyer. Anot
her application will subsequently be sent to the Danish Cultural
Assets Committee by Bruun Rasmussen on behalf of the buyer,
now that the price is known. Should an export licence not be
granted, the Danish Cultural Assets Committee would be obliged
to acquire the purchased lot at the purchase price, and the buyer
would thus not be bound to the purchase.
§ 10. Cataloguing
All lots are sold in the condition in which they are found when
knocked down and as described in the catalogue with subse
quently published changes and modifications. Cataloguing is
done according to the best of Bruun Rasmussen’s knowledge and
on the cataloguing principles stated.
The lots auctioned are often of some age or of a kind which
makes it possible that they may contain defects, deficiencies, or
may have been subject to restoration or damage not necessarily
stated in the catalogue. Catalogue pictures are for identification
only and cannot be used for an evaluation of the condition of
the goods.
Any person who wishes to bid at an auction should therefore satisfy himself of the condition of the lots for which he intends to
bid by personal inspection at the preview held prior to the auction. The catalogue description is an indication of the prevailing
oppinion of scholars and expert at the time of the printing of the
catalogue. If any doubts should arise after the purchase regarding the genuineness of the purchased lot or its conformance with
the catalogue description, Bruun Rasmussen should immediately
be informed thereof.
Should the purchased lot be proved to be a forgery, or if the catalogue description contains material errors which lead to a consi
derably higher hammer price than that which a correct catalogue
description would presumably result in, the buyer shall be entitled to cancel the purchase, after which the buyer shall be reimbursed for the total purchase price paid plus buyer's premium
and VAT, when applicable.
For material errors in the catalogue description in respect to
measurements or weight, compensation shall only be paid on a
percentage basis in proportion to the difference.
The right of cancellation of a purchase in pursuance of the
present conditions can only be exercised by the party who has
bought the lot in question at Bruun Rasmussen and shall be subject to the presentation of a claim for cancellation in writing to
Bruun Rasmussen within 2 years of the purchase date and to the
purchased lot being returned to Bruun Rasmussen in the same
condition in any and all respects which the purchased lot was in
at the time of the lot being knocked down to the buyer.
In the event of cancellation the buyer shall not be entitled to
claim payment of interest on the purchase price nor shall the
buyer be entitled to claim compensation for any other expenses
or loss incurred, including any possible loss of profit in connection with reselling.
It shall not be possible to state cancellation of a purchase in pursuance of the above provisions if:
a the catalogue description on the day the lot was knocked
down to the buyer was in accordance with the then generally
accepted opinion of scholars and experts;
b the only way of establishing whether the lot was a forgery at the time of the publication of the catalogue was the
implementation of scientific processes, the validity of which
was only acknowledged after the time of publication of the
catalogue, or which would have required a disproportionate
amount of cost, or which would have been impossible to carry
out without damaging the lot in question.
In addition to the time-limits stated above, all purchases are
subject to the Statute of Limitations stipulated by Danish law by
which Bruun Rasmussen is under no circumstance liable for purchases after 5 years from the date of purchase.

Levende fortalt
af museumsinspektør Tine Blicher-Moritz.

Moderne dansk møbeldesign
Fra billedhilsen til postkort
Tendenser, hammerslag og historie
Postkortets historie i Danmark
