MUDAS.Museu
Madeira Contemporary Art Museum
It opens on October 8th the Mudas.Museu - Madeira Contemporary
Art Museum.
The museum has been installed since 1992 in the historic Fortress
of São Tiago, in Funchal, founded in 1614, which became small
considering the extent of the collection.
The Museum’s collection consists of contemporary Portuguese art,
dated from the 60s of the 20th century until now. Its initial nucleus
collection comes from the Funchal City Plastic Arts Prize, an initiative
carried out in 1966 and 1967. This first collection, which was
temporarily displayed in Quinta Magnolia, in Funchal, since 1986,
was transferred in 1992 to the Fortress of São Tiago.
From the initial set, the highlight goes to the works of Joaquim
Rodrigo, António Areal, José Escada, Helena Almeida, Jorge Martins,
Artur Rosa, Manuel Baptista and Nuno de Siqueira, amongst others.
This Museum has been developing a purchase policy, especially
since the 90s, having represented in its collection many of the most
prominent Portuguese artists, some of them born in Madeira Island:
Lourdes Castro, Michael Biberstein, Patrícia Garrido, Martha Telles,
Pedro Cabrita Reis, Ana Vidigal, Gäetan, Eduardo Batarda, Daniel
Blaufuks, Bárbara Assis Pacheco, Miguel Branco, Pedro Calapez, Pedro
Casqueiro, Rui Chafes, Pedro Portugal, José Pedro Croft, Ilda David,
Jorge Molder, José Loureiro, Álvaro Lapa, Ana Hatherly, João Vilhena,
Alberto Carneiro, Pedro Gomes, Pedro Proença and many others.
Built on the former 16th century manor house Casa das Mudas in
Calheta , the Centro das Artes Casa das Mudas, was a project designed
by the Madeiran architect Paulo David, internationally recognised
and awarded. It was inaugurated in October 2004.
The new museum introduces the MudasBus with return trips
between Funchal and Calheta. Daily trips departure from Funchal at
10.00am and return at 1.00pm. The trips depart from the city centre
and go through the hotel’s area in Estrada Monumental on the way to
Calheta and back.

Organ Festival
The 6th edition of the
Organ Festival runs from
9-18 of October. Once
more with a programme
that enables everyone
to listen and enjoy
the best composers
of European music, explore the many potentials of Madeiran
instruments, through the mastery and talent of recognized
national and international organists in venues of exquisite beauty
and unique cultural heritage.
The Organ Festival arose six years ago under the project “Madeira
Cultural Festivals”. It reflects the conclusion of an extensive
restoration process of the Region’s organs heritage. A precious
legacy from Iberian, Italian and English Organ Schools existing in
the churches of Madeira, and whose purpose carries on being the
promotion and preservation of these instruments combined with
the diversification of our cultural offer.
The Regional Secretariat for the Economy, Tourism and Culture,
through its Department of Culture, intends to go on this path.

MARIA GADÚ
for the 1st time in Madeira
Mayra Corrêa Aygadoux, better known as MARIA GADÚ, Brazilian
singer, composer and guitar-player, returns to the Portuguese
stages in October to present her latest work “Guelã”.
After the concerts in Campo Pequeno, Lisbon, and in the Oporto
Coliseum, the 1.º Plano – Events Producer with the support of the
Regional Secretariat for Economy, Tourism and Culture/Department
of Culture, brings to Madeira Maria Gadú. On October 11, around
9.00pm, the singer takes the stage of the auditorium of Madeira
Casino Congress Centre with a unique concert performance,
accompanied by musicians Federico Puppi, Lancaster Pinto and
Bianca Godói.
In “Guelã”, edited in May, Maria Gadú
exceeds all expectations introducing
innovative sounds, supported by a
great album, widely accepted by
the public - from its sensitive
songs to its stunning graphic
design. Tracks like “obloco”
and “tecnopapiro” stress
the talent of Maria Gadú,
of always being able
to
surprise,
spreading
musicality and lyricism in
all her works.

“The Prophet” it’s an inner dialogue

madness, what is seen and what
appears to be , between what we feel
and what others make us feel ... out of
our conscience “bars”. A cry for selfdiscovery and freedom

“XMAS WHENEVER YOU WANT”
OCTOBER 21 TO 25
Adapted from the book by:
Jorge Louraço Figueira
Artistic direction and staging: Eduardo Luiz
On Christmas Eve two former students
decide to assault their former school.
Caught red-handed by the English teacher,
a confrontation gets installed between
the three, which, according to the author,
reveals their weaknesses, disappointments,
lack of opportunity and helplessness
feelings. Eventually, students and teacher
will end-up and openly sharing their
problems. The differences between them lie
in each one’s ability of dreaming, confirming
projects, and still believe in the human
being’s dignity. It’s this sharing that will
bring them together.

Dinarte Machado and João Vaz
6th Edition of Madeira Organ Festival
Further to the conferences organized in 2012 and
2013, in which a panorama of the presence of the
organ in Portuguese history was traced, through
testimony left over the course of the centuries, and in
which the current situation of the organ in the liturgy
was discussed, within the context of understanding
the instrument itself and its role on different times in
history, this lecture aims to assess the activities carried
out in the Autonomous Region of Madeira during the
last decades and to open paths for the future of the use
of the organ, bearing in mind the cultural and liturgical
needs of today and the variety of instruments with
which the churches of Madeira are endowed.
