Twenty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
THANK YOU!
THANK YOU!
THANK YOU!
To all of our wonderful volunteers, donators,
and bakers, the Parish Picnic would not have
been as successful if not for all of you!
We thank you for the time you spent at all of our
meetings, the set-up and clean- up, the serving,
the games, our obstacle course and carousel
bouncers, our band, our cooks, our face painters,
our nurse, our registration team, our bartenders,
our ice cream sales, our recyclers, and last but
not least, our Monsoon Crew, we truly appreciate
you.
Please come back next year, we have a whole year
to pray for good weather. May God bless you all!

Twenty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 30, 2009
Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you
and is able to save your souls.
The Scriptures at a Glance:
First (Hebrew) Scripture: Deuteronomy 4: 1-2, 6-8
Moses directs the people to observe the commandments of
the Lord.
Second (Letters) Scripture: James 1: 17-18, 21b-22, 27
Welcome the word that you have received and become doers
of the word, not hearers only.
The (Good News) Gospel: Mark 7: 1-8, 14-15, 21-23
You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.
THE HIGHEST LAW
From time to time, newspapers and magazines will offer, as an item of “filler,” various laws that are still on
the books but seem silly to us in our day and age. In one California city, it is illegal to have two indoor
bathtubs in one house. Clean water, a precious commodity when the law was written, is now readily
available, so the law seems silly. But the human value of protecting and preserving precious resources is
still around, evident in many conservation laws that seem sensible to us. So it is with the laws of religious
tradition. What Jesus scorns today is others’ attitude toward ritual laws, an attitude that becomes nearly
idolatrous when laws are observed for their own sake. What Jesus teaches today is that observation of
external ritual laws is of value only when they are emblems of our internal disposition toward the will of God.
Our whole lives must follow the one ultimate law of God: to love God completely and to love neighbor
entirely. Roman Catholicism is a tradition rich with customs, traditions, and even laws. As we continue to
listen to the voice of Christ, we must always look into our own hearts and underneath our ritual practices to
make sure that love of God and love of neighbor are what we prize above all.

GUSTO. . .
Do you eat to live or do you live to eat? Because of
the abundance of food in this country, most of us do
the latter. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit,
do you treat yours that way? For some, food is a
stress reliever; it controls us, and it has actually
become an idol, turning to it when under stress rather
than to God. For others, food is an excess of our flesh,
what the Bible calls gluttony. Our hearts need
changing, for even when we have our eating under
control, the cravings are still there. Many of us are
dealing with the effects of the American diet, whether
we have problems with weight, diabetes,
cardiovascular disease, lactose intolerance, Celiac
disease, or any other number of conditions which
limit our diet. GUSTO (Gluttons Under the Spirit’s
Tutelage and Oration) is a diet support group
beginning at St. Anthony on September 10th. There
are plenty of groups available for weight loss and
control, but even the Christian ones put emphasis on
appearance and/or health but neglect to deal with the
spiritual issues involved in eating behaviors. GUSTO is
not meant to be another weight loss group. There will
be no weigh-ins or competition. Its purpose is to give
support to each other in our nutritional struggles. We
will be meeting for approximately 30 minutes in the
St. Anthony Room of the Padua Center immediately
after Thursday morning Communion Service. We will
have a short devotion with a Scripture passage or other
spiritual reading, some time to share our challenges,
and time to pray for and with each other. It will be a
means of encouraging each other and arming ourselves
with God’s Word and prayer, to enable us to persevere
in our struggle to maintain a healthy diet. For more
information contact Lindysue Luster-Bartz at 708-7484394 or VALPO77@AOL.COM.
DIVORCE & BEYOND
Divorced or in the process of divorce . . . Are you hurting, angry, bitter? Do you need healing, comfort
and understanding? Join others who are experiencing the pain of divorce and those who have found hope
beyond divorce. "Divorce & Beyond" a ten-week peer support group will meet for an introductory
session on Friday evening September 11, from 7-8:30pm in the St. Anthony Padua Center. Please bring a
snack to share. Others will share how the course can help you through the grief process and to the
beginning of healing and growth. To RSVP, contact the Adult Faith Formation office at 815-469-6198, or
call Susan at 815-464-5138.

Prayer for Vocations
Pope John Paul II
Lord Jesus, as you once called the first disciples to
make them fishers of men, let your sweet invitation
continue to resound: Come, follow me! Give young
men and women the grace of responding our bishops,
priests and consecrated people in their apostolic labor.
Grant perseverance to our seminarians and to all those
who are carrying out the ideal of a life totally
consecrated to your service.
Awaken in our
community a missionary eagerness.
Lord, send workers to your harvest and do not allow
humanity to be lost for the lack of pastors, missionaries
and people dedicated to the cause of the Gospel.
Mary, Mother of the Church, the model of every
vocation, help us to say Yes to the Lord who calls us to
cooperate in the divine plan of salvation. Amen.
For an increase of vocations to the priesthood
and religious life, especially in the Diocese of Joliet.
We pray to the Lord . . .Lord, hear our prayer
