REDISCOVER YOUR HERITAGE
In 1961-62, Sainte-Famille school had 505 students and 12 nuns.
More space was desperately needed, so a gym and four new
classrooms were added.
In 1967, the schools again had students from both genders, but this
time cycles 1 and 2 were established. Children from kindergarten to
Grade 3 attended Sainte-Famille school, which had 560 students at
the time. Those in grade 4 through 7 went to Laporte school, which
accommodated 512 students.
In early 2000, Sainte-Famille and Laporte schools regained their
autonomy, each teaching students from preschool to Grade 6.
In September 2014, Saint-Famille school had 285 students,
including 38 students with communication disorders divided into
four specialized classes. As for Laporte school, every day it welcomes
351 children from the Borough of Rock Forest-St-Élie-Deauville.
Since the Sainte-Famille and Laporte schools opened, in 1949
and 1951 respectively, teaching has changed greatly. All teachers,
religious or lay, have always had the goal of transmitting their
knowledge to the thousands of young girls and boys who attended
their classes.
Maybe you were one of these children who attended one of these
two school to learn, make lasting friendships, laugh and cry, play
ball, hopscotch, or marbles, or perform in shows of all kinds.
Did you know that their walls still keep the memories of your time
there safe and sound, and remember each and every one of you?

As a result of the baby boom of the 1940s, the schools in the east
end of Sherbrooke at the time could no longer accommodate all its
children. Thus, in 1945, the commissioners approved the purchase
of Donat Manseau’s house and land on Rue Papineau, for the
purpose of building a school there.
A temporary location had to be found for the children while they
waited for this new school. So the Manseau’s home was converted
into temporary classrooms for 100 Grade 1 students, who were
taught by two nuns and a lay teacher (a woman).
In 1948, a $199 675.69 construction contract was granted.
The school was partially built from reused materials from the
demolition of the buildings where Centre Saint-Michel is located
today – an unusual practice for this time period.
In September 1949, when the new Sainte-Famille school opened,
the Filles de la Charité du Sacré-Cœur de Jésus assumed the role
of managing the school and teaching, for which they received an
annual salary of $800 per teacher, including the principal. Girls and
boys were taught there up to Grade 3.
Despite the opening of Sainte-Famille school, the number
of children in elementary school exceeded the number that
the schools in the east end could accommodate. Plus, the
commissioners wanted to separate the girls from the boys, so they
considered building another school, next to the Sainte-Famille
school.
In September 1951, the boys were transferred to the new
10-classroom school, called Laporte. From then on, Sainte-Famille
school would welcome girls only. The management of the new
Laporte school was entrusted to the Frères Maristes. The staff
consisted of three priests and eight lay teachers (four men and
four women).
In 1953, Laporte school was expanded to have 16 classrooms,
allowing it to accommodate 480 students in grades 1 through 9.
In 1958, the school board introduced a special class at
Laporte school for children from across the city who had learning
disabilities, said to be behind. The board assumed responsibility for
transportation from their houses to school.

The Classique Pif Vacances Transat
turns 40!
The Borough’s neighbourhood
celebrations
The Classique Pif Vacances Transat will be celebrating its
40th anniversary from June 29 to July 5, 2015! This edition will be
marked by outstanding calibre in terms of the sports competition
and the variety of unique family activities.
For 40 years, the Classique Pif has been ranked among the top
slo-pitch softball tournaments in North America and remains
an annual gathering for Sherbrooke residents. The number 40
represents not only the event’s years of experience but also the long
record of public confidence and quality of the organization of this
event, which is deeply rooted in Sherbrooke. For this edition, the
Classique Pif will celebrate the year with a component featuring
very special activities.
As part of the 40th anniversary celebrations, in addition to the
traditional fireworks, the Classique Pif will present unique and
appealing theme nights. These new features were specifically
chosen to put even more sparkle in the eyes of spectators and more
colour in Sherbrooke’s sky.
The collaboration of the USSSA, one of the most prestigious
slo-pitch softball associations in the United States, will enable
new American teams to attend. The USSSA will create these teams
especially for the occasion by selecting its best American players.
From now on, with the Classique Pif known as a conference circuit
tournament in its women’s and men’s invitational categories,
American and Canadian teams of different calibres will register for
it to accumulate points in anticipation of the World Series in Florida.
Thus, the competitions will be at a higher level, attracting even
more sports fans.
Neighbourhood parties are organized by the Borough of Fleurimont’s
recreation and community life division. However, they rely on
the participation of residents and local organizations to be
successful. Neighbourhood parties can be found in every district
of the Borough throughout the year. The target clientele is always
residents who live close to the park hosting the event.
Over the past year, residents took part in various activities during
these celebrations, including inflatable games, fireworks, winter
sliding, bonfires, a zipline, face painting for children, and many
other highly entertaining activities!
The Borough of Fleurimont is proud of the results of these
gatherings. We’ve already had one party this year, the celebration in
Parc Gilles-Charland on February 7.
Upcoming celebrations
• Fête du Parc du Debonair, June 13
• Fête du Parc de Marie-Reine-du-Monde, August 29
• Fête du Parc Édouard-Boudreau, September 19
Residents interested in getting involved in organizing
neighbourhood parties can call 819-565-0522 to offer their help.

The Salle du Parvis is the artistic and
cultural hub of the Borough of Fleurimont.
It fulfills three main functions: it is a place
to create, present, and teach arts and
culture. Simply put, the Salle du Parvis
seeks to provide artists of all disciplines
with a venue where they can wet their feet, exhibit their skills, and
test their material. It offers a varied and affordable program that
highlights talented local artists.
Accessibility policy of the Salle du Parvis
Mechanisms are provided to support, in whole or in part, the costs
involved in holding a cultural activity at the Salle du Parvis; mainly
for institutions and organizations.
By submitting a description of your project that specifies your goals,
approach, approximate expenses, and other relevant details to the
recreation and community life division, you could benefit from a
contribution towards your eligible expenses.
We strongly encourage you to submit your cultural activity projects!
Resident artists
Since its creation in 2010, the Salle du Parvis has been home to
the Théâtre à double tranchant. The theatre troupe, created in
1999, strives to promote on-stage expression, through collective
creations of traditional theatre and improv. On May 8 and 9, the
actors invite you to Théâtre et défilé de costumes théâtraux (theatre
and theatrical costume show), with guest singer Mario Couture.
On this occasion, they will perform about 20 scenes enriched with
dialogues from the troupe’s creations reminiscent of its greatest
moments.
The Salle du Parvis is proud to have a new resident artist, the
young poet Anthony Lacroix. You can follow the evolution of his
work and explore his reflections on his blog, accessible via the
Salle du Parvis Web site at salleduparvis.com/anthony-lacroix.
On May 24, Anthony will perform the show Le quartier de ton
corps. He will redefine the sites, history, and social life of the
east of Sherbrooke through a contemporary artistic look at his
host neighbourhood. As part of this evening, the artist will bring
together dance, drama, photography, oral poetry, and projection for
a stunning finish.

Borough Writing Contest
The Borough of Fleurimont would like to congratulate the winners
of the second edition of the Borough Writing Contest, especially
Fleurimont resident Marie-Dimanche Gagné. Her story Vaillant
shone the spotlight on John-Samuel Bourque, an east Sherbrooke
native who lived a particularly eventful life in many ways (military,
business, and politics). With Vaillant, Ms. Gagné makes readers
experience the emotion of a specific time in Mr. Bourque’s military
career.
Ms. Gagné’s story, as well as those of the other winners, will be
published in a booklet that will be available in borough offices
as of May. The Borough Writing Contest is organized by the
Ville de Sherbrooke, in collaboration with the Association des
auteurs et auteures de l’Estrie. It aims to promote writing while
enabling residents to get to know more about their borough.
Happy reading!
