So, it may be a young teenager delivering your paper each week, but their whole family is involved. By making this decision, we knew we would have a good base of reliable carriers, as we felt that those that were involved with what their children do, probably instill good work ethics in their children as well. Over the past twenty years, Lois and I are frequently impressed and made proud by what some of these young people achieve as they reach adulthood. When we see a young lady that used to work for us, raising children of her own, or acting in a role of leadership with a company or organization… we beam with pride. When we see a young man, that once hauled newspapers through extreme heat on hot days, or blizzard like weather in winter, now managing a business or making a difference in their community, we quietly celebrate in our hearts. These are the types of folks that work for us that we affectionately refer to as ‘The Scoop Troupe’. Hard working families that believe in teaching their children the value of hard work, responsibility, and commitment. Lois and I believe that this has a lasting effect on our youth long after they leave us All you can eat $22 5:00 - 9:00 Choose from: 3 different pasta selections 13 optional ingredients 3 popular sauce options Includes: Bread Bar, Salad Bar & Dessert Bar (Kids under 12 are ½ price) Phone: 403-912-2191 www.AppleCreekGolfCourse.com Enjoy our regular food & beverage menu & daily specials 7 days a week in our club house or on the patio 11064 TWP Road 275, Rockyview, AB T4B 2A3 Fridays are abulous Call to Book Today! $49.99 at Couples Night July 29th 6:00 pm Start 9 holes includes: Green Fee, Power Cart, Prize Fee, Pasta Bar, and Live Entertainment each www.AppleCreekGolfCourse.com Every 2nd Friday Next Date: August 12th 11064 TWP Road 275, Rockyview, AB Call the Pro Shop at 403-912-2191 to sign up! Now, knowing the pride we have in our carriers who are a part of the Scoop family, you can imagine the joy we experience when one of them exceeds our expectations. Such is the case with 21 year-old, Shantel Miller. We’ve known Shantel’s parents for years, Val and Darryl Miller, who run Airdrie Windshield and Glass. We know them as a hardworking couple that gives back to their community and teaches that generosity to their children. We were thrilled when young Jagger, Shantel’s brother, joined ‘The Scoop Troupe’ as we knew we now had the Miller family as part of our family. Now for the real story, folks. Shantel is a HUGE fan of Ellen DeGeneres. She never, ever, misses her show. Ellen has a way of inspiring her audience with guests, heart-warming stories, and acts of kindness. One will often find, after watching the show, an inner desire to be a better person. This is probably what makes Shantel such a big fan. So much so, that for almost three years, Shantel faithfully registered every week for tickets to sit in the audience of a live taping. Then, four months ago, her determination paid off. Shantel’s sister, Shala, was in labour when Shantel got a phone call from the folks at ‘The Ellen Show’. Although her sister would have loved to go with her, she stayed behind with Shantel’s new niece, Jade. Shantel showed up with some other family members, including her Mom, Val. While standing outside in line, the crowd was entertained with some games. Through those games, Shantel was chosen to participate in a game, live on air. You can imagine the excitement! This is her idol… her heroine… and she gets to actually meet her. Shantel won that game, folks. And as her prize, she was gifted with a big screen television. This was a BIG screen, you understand, so you can’t take it as a carry-on during the flight home. So the show’s producers told her they would have it delivered. Once home, Shantel, still overwhelmed by her experience, reflected on her adventure. She then thought about what she had won. Did she really NEED that television set? She knew people who could use it much more than her. Besides, she had already met her heroine, so what more could anyone ask for? So, she wrote the show and told them that although she appreciated the gift, that she would like to see it go to someone more deserving. Do you believe in Karma, folks? I do. I believe good deeds are deserving of good deeds. I believe that prosperity comes to those with generous souls. You see, folks, Shantel is a very hard working young lady. On top of going to university full-time, she also works at a local eatery, fills in at her Mom and Dad’s shop, works some on-call shifts at a local tanning salon, and pitches in with sorting and delivering newspapers for her brother, Jagger. She drives to and from school in a beat-up jalopy and crosses her fingers that she’ll get one more month out of it. She could have sold the television set, and put it towards another car, but that’s not what she did. Instead, as hard as she works, she chose to have it given to someone else less fortunate. The TV in my world is usually on more for noise than entertainment. CBC is not a channel that I normally watch, but I tuned into a great show last night that is just plain awesome; Still Standing hosted by comedian Jonny Harris. Last night’s episode was filmed near my old stomping grounds, Eganville, Ontario, and it was pretty neat seeing my old high school teacher, a family that I went to school with, and some main tourism centers to visit on TV. Jonny, himself, is quite witty, so I’ll be tuning in again for sure. This column is mostly inspired by conversation, books on Canada, and now I think I can draw some insight from Jonny Harris. 403.948.4788 highlandauto@shawbiz.ca 520 Centre Ave East Airdrie, Alberta T4B 1P8 We have recently added a 24 hour U-Fill Water Station This is a system where you can fill your own 5 gallon bottles on your own when we are not here. Have you ever been to Punkeydoodles Corners? A hamlet located southwest of the University of Waterloo on Road 101A, only a 25 minute drive away from campus. The humorous name, Punkeydoodles Corners was a frequent victim to sign theft, where signs would be stolen as quickly as they were put up. Who wouldn’t want a road sign in their living room “Punkeydoodles Corners”? The township gave up on replacing the signs a few years ago. Now the town no longer appears on the Official Road Map of Ontario and is easy to miss when driving past. Look for a statue of Joe Clark, or perhaps a pillar in honour of Joe Clark’s participation in the 1982 Canada Day festivities. Joe who? You ask. Definitely a memorable day when former Prime Minister Joe Clark added Punkeydoodles Corners to his Canada Day festivities. Another funny one that caught my eye, Saint-Louis-du-Ha!Ha! is located near the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River. The population is somewhere around 1350 and the main industry is agriculture. Can you just imagine that family road trip? First stop Punkeydoodles Corners, then we’ll head to SaintLouis-du-Ha!Ha! and enjoy all the Canadian splendor in between. Wherever will our travels take us next week? Soon after the honeymoon, she and her husband tried it out. Almost immediately, smoke billowed out of the toaster. “Get the owner’s manual!” my daughter’s husband shouted. “I can’t find it anywhere!” cried my daughter a short time later. “Oops!” came a voice from the kitchen. “Well, the toast is fine, but the owner’s manual’s burned to a crisp.” Can Daddies Cry? One wet day as I got out of my conversion van in the hand-operated car wash, I discovered the floor was a lake, and I fell hard, hurting my elbow. After I hauled myself painfully into the van, my two children were quick to console me. I drove the short distance to the service station for change. Before getting out...my elbow still aching...I complained: “Oh, this hurts, it really hurts. Are daddies allowed to cry?” My six-year-old boy was silent for a moment. “Yes, daddies are allowed to cry,” he decided, “but not while they’re at a gas station.” If you are travelling this summer don’t forget to take us along! When the owner answered, the hobo asked, “Please, sir, could you give me something to eat? I haven’t had a good meal in several days.” The owner said, “I have made a fortune in my lifetime by supplying goods for people. I never give anything away for nothing. However, if you go around the back, you will see a gallon of paint and a clean paint brush. If you will paint my porch, I will give you a good meal.” So the hobo went around back and a little later he again knocked on the door. The owner said, “Finished already? Good. Come on in. Sit down. The cook will bring your meal right in.” The hobo said, “Thank you very much, sir. But there is something that I think you should know. As a youngster, it was always in my vision to visit the “Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth”. My first Calgary Stampede was when I was 19 (the year is not important). Get this, four of us hitchhiked in from Lake Louise to take in the event. I never did tell my parents I hitchhiked into Calgary and I can only hope my offspring aren’t as foolish. Honestly, I don’t know what I was expecting, but I do know when all was said and done, I was very disappointed. All I saw was a big midway with the same rides and games we had at the Ottawa Exhibition. Oh, and everyone, even the carnies, wore cowboy hats. What a facade. Skip ahead a few years when I moved into Calgary and I caught the Stampede fever. Working for FedEx, they wouldn’t let us wear our western duds, but I had my cowboy hat, bandana, and western jewellery in my bag ready to put on after I rolled out of the station. I kept the uniform, I just fancied up my duds so I didn’t stand out in downtown Calgary. Stampede week took on a whole new meaning for me and so did the event. I have so many really FUN memories from many Stampede events over the years. I didn’t buy groceries for over a week. I was fed breakfast, lunch and supper for ten days. I may not have eaten flapjacks for another 365 days but, for those ten days, I donned my cowboy hat, denim, and boots and came to the realization that this wasn’t a facade... it’s Calgarian. Yes, I’m an Airdrian now, but there is still a spark that lights up inside me, just like when I was a kid, watching the evening news with the Stampede rodeo highlights. At my very first Grand Stand Show, the main event was Box Car Willie. Al and I have taken in quite a few Stampedes. The rodeo and grand stand shows are just spectacular! When we were parents of teens, we took in countless bands at the Coca-Cola Stage, and this year, we lucked out to get tickets for Jeff Dunham. I dug out the plaid and denim, and we were off. In hindsight, I should have dug out an umbrella, too, as we got soaked to the core. I may have been a little whiny this year given the weather, but even with all that rain, my Stampede spark was still lit. There have been a lot of changes with companies throwing those big shin-digs and leaving it open to the public, but the one thing that still remains is that Stampede Fever. It causes increased smiling, impulsive yahoo-ing, and the ability to be everyone’s friend. FLOORING For All Your Flooring and Design Needs! Ellen was so moved by Shantel’s selfless act, that she invited her back onto the show, and again, Shantel was chosen to play a game. This time, she was jokingly told by Ellen, “You can’t give this one back!” Shantel was gifted with a brand new 2016 Chevy Malibu with all the bells and whistles. I was privileged to be present last Thursday at Davis Chevrolet in Airdrie, as Shantel received her brand new ride. A crowd of people welcomed her and cheered.
