As I stood at the State President’s podium reciting opening ceremonies with some of my former teammates, it reminded me of many other fond memories in FFA. Creed speaking, land judging and traveling to Kansas City for National Convention were a few. There have been many changes over the last 85 years, but the core curriculum, Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects and preparation for the next generation of agricultural leaders has stayed the same. We are seeing great momentum in agriculture and in ag education today. Within the past month, the National FFA Organization announced that membership is higher than it has ever been. More than 22,300 new students joined the National FFA Organization during the last year. This trend is happening at home too, as Nebraska FFA has hit record highs in student membership and number of FFA chapters. There is great momentum and a lot to be excited about in Nebraska FFA and, as Board President of the Nebraska FFA Foundation, I’m excited to share with you some of the successes of the Foundation over the past 12 months. We celebrated 85 years of Nebraska FFA during the Nebraska FFA State Convention by introducing opportunities for long-term giving and introduced the Blue and Gold Society for planned giving. Many former FFA members and FFA supporters are stepping up to make sure that future FFA members receive similar experiences to what they experienced. Participation and your support for the fourth annual I Believe in the Future of Ag campaign blew us all away this year. Over $270,000 was raised and over $190,000 was sent directly back to participating chapters. Many of these chapters are using this money for enhancing their ag programs, doing unique community service projects, attending leadership conferences or providing scholarships for students. There is great momentum at the Nebraska FFA Foundation, Nebraska FFA Association and all 150 agricultural education programs. We are faced with new challenges every day to help meet the need of our growing organizations and the growing need for ag teachers and ag industry professionals. Take a look at our website at www.neffafoundation.org to see more stories of exciting things happening in Nebraska FFA. I will always remember my involvement in the Blue Hill FFA Chapter and as a State FFA Officer. If you were involved in FFA, I know you understand the importance of our work and I ask for your continued support of Nebraska’s state and local FFA programs. Please fill out the enclosed donation card and mail your donation or go to www.neffafoundation.org to make your donation today. Your donation will develop the next generation of agricultural leaders. Thank you for your continued support of Nebraska FFA. That’s the best word to describe the 2012-13 year in Nebraska FFA. We celebrated 85 years of Nebraska FFA, hit record FFA membership of 6,900 and record FFA chapters at 150. The Nebraska FFA Foundation worked together with Matt Kreifels, State Director of Ag Education, Robin Jirovsky, our new Nebraska FFA State Advisor, Anita Wollenburg, new State FFA Officer Coordinator, and 150 FFA Programs to grow our future leaders. There is a great deal of growth and momentum Nebraska FFA is experiencing; however, there are gaps moving forward that I want you to be aware of: • • • Only 14 percent of Nebraska students are enrolled in an Agriculture Education course. That number has to increase if FFA is to continue to contribute to Nebraska’s largest industry. There are small steps being made, even in urban areas like the Omaha Bryan Urban Agriculture and Natural Resources Career Academy, but for a state where our economic engine is agriculture, more communities should be offering Agriculture Education and FFA. The second gap really relates to the first. The USDA estimates a five percent increase in new ag jobs or about 55,000. There will be a shortage in the number of students applying for these jobs with an ag background. We need to get students plugged into the ag industry. We need more Ag Teachers. Although six new programs were started last year, there were seven additional schools that wanted to start a new FFA program. They were not able to due to a shortage of ag teachers. • As we add to the list of chapters and number of members involved in our programs across Nebraska, we need to be sure that those meaningful FFA experiences are just as prominent for tomorrow’s students. It is critical that we ensure long-term statewide leadership in FFA and plan for growing our capacity to meet the needs of Nebraska FFA members in the future. In order for the Nebraska FFA Foundation to continue to provide financial support to Nebraska FFA, we need your support. We need help in creating additional long-term funding sources to support Nebraska FFA. We also need to provide financial support to local chapters and ag educators to assist in local growth and capacity building. Finally, we’ve created long-term giving opportunities for people to support our mission. Our goal is to raise at least one million dollars with 100 individual donors giving multiple year gifts up to the 100th anniversary of Nebraska FFA in 2028. We expect more growth in Nebraska FFA. I’m asking you to consider making a tax-deductible gift through one of our corporate or individual giving programs. Continue reading and visit our new website www.neffafoundation.org to find more information on our programs and ways to give. Thank you for your continued support in Nebraska youth in agriculture. Fleecs Matt and Sara Kreifels Rich and Lanelle Herink Leadership Gifts During the Celebration of 85 Years of Nebraska FFA, the Nebraska FFA Foundation announced the opportunity for supporters to make leadership gifts. These gifts support the mission of the Nebraska FFA Foundation and the strategies set forth by the Board of Directors. It is the goal of the Nebraska FFA Foundation to raise $1 million in leadership gifts by the 100th anniversary of Nebraska FFA in 2028. Our thanks to these generous donors who have pledged this level of support for the next five years. Gift of the Rising Sun $50,000 Frank J. Fleecs Gift of the Plow $25,000 Blake and Holly Johnson Keith and Doris Olsen Johnson Family from Holdrege Chooses Gift of the Plow Gift of Corn $5,000 Loran and Nancy Wach Angela and Jeremy Armagost Karl and Margaret Hensley Richard and Sharon Katt Mark and Nancy Poeschl When you ask Blake Johnson from Holdrege about organizations that made an impact on his life, he’s the first to tell you that FFA stands in the forefront of great youth organizations. Johnson was a State FFA Vice President in 1988-89 and was awarded Star Farmer of America in 1991. Today, Johnson has a family farming operation in the Holdrege area along with being a crop insurance agent for John Deere Risk Protection. Blake and his wife, Holly, have 3 sons – Grady (13), Quinn (10) and Jett (6). Blake and Holly wanted to find a way to give back to Nebraska FFA which led them to the gift of the plow, a commitment of $5,000 per year for five years. They chose to give to the Nebraska FFA Foundation because FFA has had such a positive influence in the success of their lives. According to Johnson, it taught them how to network and develop successful relationships. It’s useful for him today because it trained them to be futuristic when looking for new ideas to make their operation more cutting edge. “Agriculture is the backbone of the United States economy. As we have less rural and more urban influence, we have to find ways to educate and inspire our youth to become involved in agriculture. FFA is a program that can impact youth to develop future leaders and successful business people,” says Johnson. The Johnson family encourages others with ties to agriculture to donate to the Nebraska FFA Foundation. 10 Individual Supporters General Fund Donors The Nebraska FFA Foundation wishes to recognize the support of individual contributors who have made the investment in Nebraska’s agricultural education programs. Their monetary contributions support numerous Nebraska FFA programs. Thank you to those who continue to see the importance in investing in the agricultural leaders of tomorrow. * denotes a former Nebraska FFA State Officer Dewey and Nancy Knuth Brett and Pam Mueller* Tim Esser Edgar and Frances Reynolds Foundation Butch and Janie Gutzmann Trent Janssen Ronnie and Jane Green Connie Clausen Bill and RanDee Barger Jack Nemec* Dann Husmann Cory Epler Judson and Kaye Jesske* Douglas and Janelle Bruning Lane Grindle Normil Foundation Edward and Linda Stich Tom Volk* Brady Revels Ryan and Kristen Hassebrook* James Nygren* Chris Kalkowski* Dustin and Tammy Mashino Craig and Shari Head Family Kent and Aundria Kirchhoff Gordon Smith Don and Kelly Witte* Mark and Willow Holoubek* Greg and Barb Bonifas* Wayne and Louise Rasmussen* Richard and Lanelle Herink* Jack Schinstock Mike Roeber, In memory of Bob Clausen Sally Bush*, In Memory of Joyce Casten Karl Linke* and in memory of Larry Narsel Stephen and Elma Nelson Kenneth and Clarice Sabata Marty Tatman Ken and Laura Smedra* Leslie Denning Allen Schreiner* Tammy Meyer Matt and Sarah Kreifels Chris Robinett Gene and Rose Wissenburg Mike and Glenda Davis Donald Kracke* Adam McCracken Neal and Nancy Schlautman* Fran and Tom Geisler Andrew and Bonnie Jensen* Randy Vlasin Jacob Smith Bob and Cynthia Milligan* Robert Swett Kristine Smith Dean Glock Roger Wilshusen* Lance Atwater* Elmer Miller Roy and Sarah Miller Lloyd and Loye Wolfe Gerald and Beverly Clausen Scott and Tara Keetle* Roger and Josie Gutzmann Homer Buell Wayne and Judy Rasmussen Ron Arp* Kent Thompson Roger and Jill Goedeken Russ and Sharon Breitkreutz Mark Poeschl* James and Sarah Mullen Thomas and Beverly Thurber Pete McClymont Brandon and Katie Gutzmann Vern and Lisa Taylor* Richard Hahn Reed Nelsen Victor Bohuslavsky* Seth and Carrie Derner* Brian and Kelli Thompson* Brian and Stacey Agnew* Shane and Kelli Belohrad* Dennis and Sharon Derner Jeffery Grawe Jeffrey Neville Jason and Annette Harb* John Bader* David and Alyce Tejral Larry Rasmussen* Kyle Perry* Don and Marilyn Swanson* Leroy and Judy Tejral Trisha and Bryan Danburg Doris Vlasin Mike, Christin and Austin Kamm Don and Sandy Frey Ken and Mary Madden Ron Anderson* Bruce and Carolyn Riddell Mike and Sara Scholz* Scott Aden* Trey Mogensen Rick and Dee Keith Steve and Judy Zimmerman Jessica Kolterman Duane Polodna Patricia Brugger Founders Club The Nebraska FFA Foundation wishes to recognize a group of individuals who have served on the Nebraska FFA Foundation Board of Directors. Students must apply to be selected for an FFA jacket and, for many, this is one of their first experiences as an FFA member. In the fall of 2012, about 300 applications were received and almost 190 students were awarded a new FFA jacket and a tie or scarf. Nebraska Agricultural Education & FFA Nebraska agricultural education is preparing students for a lifetime of successful careers and informed choices in the global agriculture, food, fiber and natural resources systems. Knowing that the agricultural industry employs one of every three Nebraskans and that the world population will increase by over 2.5 billion people within their lifetime, students are motivated in this career field. They equip themselves for this reality in local classes/programs and during world-class state and national educational experiences. Message from the State Director of Ag Education The future of agriculture is bright in Nebraska. Over the past five years, we’ve added 20 Agricultural Education Programs/ FFA Chapters, totaling 150 high schools offering the program to their students. This matches an all-time high of 150 chapters that stretches all the way back to 1955! When considering these numbers, please also take into account the difference in public school structure in the 1950s compared to today. We now have far fewer school districts compared to that time due to school consolidation. In effect, Nebraska Agricultural Education serves a much larger percent of students today than anytime in our history! Some people are surprised to learn of the popularity of Agricultural Education and FFA in schools today. Many ask, “There are so fewer farmers today than thirty years ago. Why are students interested?” While it may be true that there are fewer people directly employed by production agriculture (farming and ranching), onein-three Nebraskans can directly connect their job to agriculture. School board members, administrators and communities have taken notice of this trend, especially as the agricultural industry has been a stabilizing force in our state’s economy during recent years. This and the popular realization that we will need to raise twice as much food per acre in order to feed 9 billion people by 2050 (the peak of today’s high school student’s future career) are major contributors to program growth. So what careers are students pursuing in agriculture? According to agricultural departments in Nebraska Community Colleges, the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture (NCTA) and UNL’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR), enrollments have never been higher. In fact, CASNR’s student enrollment numbers have broken records for three-straight years and is leading the University for enrollment growth. Students across all agricultural college campuses are enrolling in programs that prepare them to be involved in the business and science of agriculture. These careers and college majors fall into one of seven “Career Clusters” below. Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Career Clusters Agribusiness Animal Science & Management Environmental Service Food Products and Processing Natural Resources Plant Science and Management Power Structure and Technical Systems Never before has the need for such a high understanding of both business and scientific principles been as important as it is today for agricultural students, nor has there been such a demand for our young people to enter the field. This is good news for our youth and for our communities, both urban and rural. Agricultural Education prepares students for successful careers and a lifetime of informed choices in the agriculture, food and natural resources industry. Thank you for your support of our local and statewide programs to give Nebraska students a head start in their career and future. Freeman High School, located in Adams, decided they needed to take the next step to enhance learning at the high school and elementary levels and a growing dome was just the ticket. A growing dome features lower costs and is more “green” than a traditional greenhouse because of its use of renewable energies. Jensen says this was a natural fit to grow the program’s involvement in school and in local communities. The completed growing dome is 33 feet in diameter. To build the growing dome, the FFA chapter had to find ways to fund the 26-foot greenhouse first. Jensen says, “The fundraising campaign truly was a community effort and the “I Believe in the Future of Ag” campaign played a big role in making it happen.” He credits the I Believe campaign in helping them spread the word and making community members inquire about the project. He says, “Once the support started coming in through grants and community members, we knew we could do more and decided to expand to the 33-foot growing dome.” 22 A Unique Partnership with Farm Credit Services of America He formed a unique partnership with his local Farm Credit Services of America (FCSA) office to help him with fundraising and construction of the growing dome. Kelly Lenners, Financial Advisor from FCSA in Beatrice says, “It has been exciting watching the ag students and FFA members be so involved in a project that benefits the entire Southeast Nebraska Community!” FCSA employees from Beatrice and Lincoln helped with construction of the dome, by contributing 112 volunteer hours spread out over four days. A Learning Experience for All Ages The growing dome was constructed in spring 2013. FFA members and volunteers tended to the plants over the summer and now that school is in session, Freeman High School’s ag ed students are hard at work. Learning about agronomy and horticulture in the greenhouse. Jensen is developing a mentoring program for elementary classes. His goal is to give elementary and high school students hands-on experience in agriculture and food production and food processing. Freeman FFA Facts: Location: The Freeman School District located southeast of Lincoln and includes the towns of Adams and Filley. FFA Members: 52 Pre-K - Seniors Involved with Growing Dome: 419 Community members involved with growing dome: 24 it’s changed the way our school and community looks at this whole idea of feeding the world.” When asked what’s next, Jensen said, “We’ve already got a community garden project in the works.” Feeding Their Neighbors The growing dome also gives students an extraordinary opportunity to give back and create a giving environment in their communities. Over 200 pounds of produce was picked and donated to the Food Bank of Lincoln this summer. The program has also seen that impact spiraling in their community. Several community members have contributed extra produce from their garden to the weekly pickup by The Farm Credit Services of America team gathers for a picture the food bank. “I think during the construction of the growing dome. Ag Education & FFA Neujahr’s Partnership Provides Hands-On Learning Experience It all started with a weedy piece of land for Andrew Neujahr to learn about marketing, agronomy, contracting and insurance to gain hands-on experience with farm management. Neujahr’s family farms near Waverly and when a neighbor approached him about farming a piece of land to get rid of the weeds, Loren Neujahr, Andrew’s dad, thought this was a great opportunity for his son to learn the ropes. Andrew took on the task as part of his Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE). He farmed the five acres for a year before forming a partnership with Tim Boender, Regional Sales Director for Winfield Solutions, also of Waverly. As part of this partnership Boender provided seed and chemicals for Andrew’s land. He has grown both corn and soybeans and learned to take soil samples and tissue samples. He works closely with one of Croplan’s agronomists to help decipher the data. Research results from Andrew’s field are shared with Winfield. “This has just been a great learning experience. I’ve received seed, chemical and an awesome learning opportunity,” says Andrew. He is now a freshman at the University of Nebraska– Lincoln majoring in Agronomy and plans to return to the family farm. This partnership is setting him up for success in finding an internship and for a successful future on the farm. 2012-2013 Nebraska FFA State Officer Team Brooke Jindra, State Vice President Leigh FFA Alix Mashino, State President West Boyd FFA Doug Larsen, State Vice President Stuart FFA Johnny Ference, State Secretary Ord FFA Maci Lienemann, State Vice President Norris FFA Amber Burenheide, State Vice President Howells-Clarkson FFA Andrew Ambriz, State Vice President West Point FFA 23 Ag Education & FFA FFA Holds First Annual AgriScience Fair at State Convention in April Anita Wollenburg, pictured right, speaks with participants at the AgriScience Fair. The first annual AgriScience Fair was held in April as part of the activities at the State FFA Convention. According to Anita Wollenburg, chair of the AgriScience Fair, the purpose was to build awareness of science through research of current agricultural issues. Topics focused in areas of the six career pathways – plant systems; animal systems; environmental and natural resources systems; food products and processing systems; power, structural and technical systems and social systems. We feel that science is going to lead the way in helping our farmers meet that goal. The AgriScience Fair provided students a real life opportunity to start thinking of ways that they can help solve the challenges of the future. DuPont Pioneer is committed to continue providing opportunities for students to learn the skills necessary to be leaders in the future,” says Mat Habrock, Communications Manager for DuPont Pioneer’s Western Business Unit. production side of the equation. “Everyone understands the production side of what agriculture stands for, but events like this provide opportunities for the public to understand the science, business and technology that goes into the pre-production and production of agriculture systems,” says Wollenburg. “It gives students an opportunity to understand real-world issues and to connect with industry professionals.” This new event was made possible with a $10,000 grant from DuPont Pioneer and it showcased 62 projects – some team and some individual. A total of 75 students participated in the event that was held on UNL’s East Campus during State FFA Convention. At the AgriScience Fair, students were able to pick their own research topic. Then they had to develop a hypothesis, process, procedures and results that were published into a research paper. Participants were then paired with industry professionals to engage in an interview about their research topic. One student explains his project to judges at the first annual AgriScience Fair. “The Nebraska FFA has always been really great about including all of the opportunities offered at the national level,” Wollenburg says, “and when DuPont Pioneer came to us and expressed the desire and the need to Presenting these students with realworld topics will enable students to think critically when problem solving the challenges of facing the future of agriculture. Plus it gives some spotlight that agriculture is more than just the This is just one more example of how FFA continues to impact the lives of youth in the state of Nebraska and provide opportunities for the leaders of tomorrow to speak out about the positive impact of agriculture. Results speak louder than words - as 13 of the 75 students went on to qualify for National competition to be held in October 2013. That’s in comparison to one qualifier last year. Financial Overview The Nebraska FFA Foundation supports Nebraska’s agricultural education and FFA programs through state awards and recognition, local chapter programming dollars, leadership programming support, ag ed teacher activities and state FFA convention. While the Foundation has seen an increase in support from individuals and industry over the past few years, the need still remains evident. Growth in the number of FFA chapters across the state means the Nebraska FFA Foundation also needs your support to continue to provide dollars for quality programs for each of these chapters and their growing amount of members. Financial Information Treasurer’s Report Thrift. From the beginning of FFA in 1928, thrift has been a core value of the organization. I’m guessing it was the result of the wisdom from the boom and bust periods of the early 20th century – the lesson that successful farmers were those that invested during the good times to be able to withstand the lean. As a board, we recognize that this past year was another good year for many of us in the Cornhusker state and many have been generous in your gifts to support FFA. We have initiated a long-term investment plan to set aside funds for the next 15 years that will be used to 1) provide security in times of fiscal crises, 2) ensure funds will always be available to support state staff and leadership for FFA in case federal or state funding stops supporting those positions and 3) provides innovation funds to local communities and ag education to ensure that FFA remains relevant to the young people and the industry it serves. We are excited to have made our first investments into these funds this year and look forward to building them over time. As for this past year, we had continued growth in the total amount of funds raised and the total amount of funds used to support FFA members and chapters. The figures presented in the annual report for 2012-2013 are in audit as this report is being prepared. Please note that we modified our fiscal year to now end on July 31 rather than August 30 to better match our program year. Therefore, the budget numbers from 2012-2013 will not compare directly to other years as it is only an 11-month period. We are proud of the transparency and controls in place to ensure financial security for the Foundation. If you would like to review our annual audit or have any questions about the financials of the Nebraska FFA Foundation, please contact our staff or board members. Thanks again for your support.
