‘The Beat
Generation
was a group of
writers that
emerged during
the ​
1950s​
in
rejection of
formalism and
the American Culture they viewed as laden with capitalism and materialism’.
The ​
core group​
of Beat Generation authors included: Herbert Huncke, Allen
Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, Lucien Carr, and Jack Kerouac. ​
Others
central to the movement were John Holmes, Gary Snyder, Neal Cassady,
Gregory Corso, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Thomas Wolfe and many others. While
there were also a few women tied to this literary movement, the ‘Beat’
generation remained primarily a ​
‘boys club’.

‘It was Kerouac who coined the term 'Beat Generation.' ​

was meant to describe their feelings of being ​
beaten down,
defeated and out of place​
among the returning soldiers and
businessmen of the time. ​
The Beats ​
were as much about
an ​
attitude and culture​
as they were about a literary style.
Many of the Beats came from upper or middle class
backgrounds and had actually met while attending various
prestigious Easterly located universities. choosing to rebel
against societal norms, they fled the east and congregated​
in San Francisco, finding the city to be much
more supportive of counter-culture they espoused. While in​
San Francisco, Ferlinghetti ran the ​
City
Lights bookstore (It’s still there!)​
,​
and assisted many young struggling writers become a community of
kindred spirits.

Postmodern literature, like ​
postmodernism​
as a whole, tends to resist definition or
classification as a "​
movement".
Postmodernism​
is a complicated term, really more of a set of ideas, and while originating
near the end of WWII, the movement did not become an interest of academic study
until the mid-1980s.
Postmodernism is difficult to define​
because it is a
concept that manifests within a multitude of academic
and artistic genres including art, architecture, music,
film, literature, sociology, communications, fashion, and
technology.
The characteristics of Postmodernism​
are similar to
those found in Modernism although Postmodernism
presents itself in a more playful stance--celebratory
of the craziness and insanity of the world. Feeling no instances of universal truths,
the time period become widely recognized as a movement, epic in scope, comprised of
innovative techniques and a wide range of psychological and intellectual impact--resulting
in numerous edgy pieces of literature, art and film.
