The bishops’ pastoral on stewardship reminds us, “that ‘life to come’ is in continuity with this present life through the human goods, the worthy human purposes, which people foster now.” Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards who practice the corporal work of mercy - to clothe the naked - by making clothing donations to thrift stores, organizing a drive to send sport uniforms to children in developing countries or sacrificing the purchase of new clothing to donate to agencies that provide clothing to those in need. Sharing One’s Material Resources in the Parish First Friday May 6, 2016 There will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament following the 9:00 a.m. Mass, until 3:00 p.m., in the Chapel of the Holy Cross located in the Parish Ministry Building. First Saturday May 7, 2016 On the first Saturday of the month, devotions to honor Our Lady of Fatima will take place at 8:30 a.m. followed by the 9:00 a.m. Mass. From the Rector— Dear Parishioners: I write to bring several things to your attention: Adoration Chapel: As you may remember, one of the things we wanted to do with the restoration of the Cathedral was to create a chapel where people could come in order to pray on weekdays after 2:00 p.m. when the Cathedral, due to problems of vandalism in the past, was generally locked. Such a chapel would be near the tabernacle but would also give limited access to the rest of the Cathedral. Please know that this Adoration Chapel has been completed and will be open until 7:00 p.m. Monday to Friday (on weekends the entire Cathedral is open until the completion of that day’s final Mass). Access to the Chapel will be through the middle door on Clinton Avenue. Mass Transit Bus: You may be familiar with the yellow “Mass Transit” bus that is usually parked in the lot across from the Cathedral and is used to bring parishioners who do not drive to Mass on Sunday. To make it easier for people to get in and out of the bus, we have replaced this traditional school bus with a smaller van that will be large enough to accommodate 15 passengers. It is the type of van that the Village of Rockville Centre uses for senior transportation or Molloy College uses for their students and will be more “user friendly.” I take this opportunity to especially thank John Joyce who has been driving the school bus every Sunday for over 20 years and Rocco Zappia who has been assisting the passengers on the bus for many years. I also thank Brandon Sino, who is also a driver, and is very diligent in facilitating whatever needs to be done in caring for the bus. He also helped us to purchase this bus from a nearby village. Exterior restoration: You may notice that some of the top scaffolding on the front of the Cathedral has been removed. In the coming days, I will be giving a more thorough report of the work that has been done and what we may wish to do to address “issues” on the other three sides of the Cathedral (work which is not going to be as extensive as the front, but was identified as a need). In the meantime however, please know that the end of this project is in sight and we are looking to complete this work on the front façade over the summer. As each level of the work is completed the scaffolding will be removed. As always, please feel free to contact me should you have any questions. In the Peace and Love of Christ, Father Bill May 1, 2016 6 St. Agnes Parish Outreach Our food pantry is in need of the following items: rice, macaroni and cheese, spaghetti, marinara sauce, peanut butter and jelly, tuna fish, and cereal. Catholic Charities’ Talbot House serves the needs of families in crisis due to substance abuse. In 2008, Bill received a call from his son Michael who was away at medical school. Michael was in crisis – addicted to drugs and plummeting out-of-control. Searching for a safe environment to get Michael help, Bill found Talbot House. At first Michael didn’t want to stay – but 22 days after he moved in – Michael was a different person. “Talbot House gave our son back to us. It’s a wonderful resource. Michael fully credited Talbot House and his counselor with his recovery. Michael went on to graduate from medical school with the intention of working in the area of addiction medicine.” Michael’s life was cut short when, on the way to visit his grandmother, his car was hit head-on by an impaired driver. Inspired by his son’s desire to help those with addiction, today Bill volunteers at Talbot House as a spiritual education counselor, helping residents address the topics and events that may be holding them back from recovery. “Michael said he owed his life to Talbot House. I know I belong here carrying on his work.” Please consider donating to the Appeal and a difference in someone’s life. Thank you!
