Dear Parishioners and Visitors of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Shrine
Faith, Hope, & Love Abide
A few years ago, I received a t-shirt from a good friend and fellow Anglophile.
The blue shirt had bold white words written on it: “Keep Calm and Carry On.” I wore it once
while traveling. Several people in the airport shared their appreciation of the message and
some even thanked me for wearing it! The terrorism of September 11, 2001 increased our
patriotic spirit, especially as stories of the heroes of that day were shared, but it also left many Americans
afraid to travel outside of their communities. I had no idea when I put that shirt on in the morning that I would
lift some of that fear from my fellow travelers. There is so much good that we can do through small acts,
sometimes even unintentionally!
My shirt was based on a British motivational poster printed during World War II.
It was designed to encourage the residents of London to carry on with their ordinary lives despite the German
bombing of the city. The poster never fulfilled this purpose as the posters were put in storage and never
displayed. It was forgotten until bookstore owners discovered one in a box of old books – in 2000. They hung
the poster in their store and customers showed so much interest in it that in 2001 they began to sell copies.
The poster’s timely reappearance struck a chord in our post-9/11 world. As a priest, I’ve learned that we often
don’t know how much good our actions will mean to people long after we’ve forgotten them!
Sadly, the poster’s message has been grossly commercialized. Many “twists” on the
words are inane. Many others are morally inappropriate. God sends his Word to people of every time and
place, but it is a tragedy when that Word is warped by human sinfulness. New threats fill many of us with fear
and anger in recent days. Will Ebola spread through the United States? How much longer will we allow the
Islamic State to massacre innocent people, many of them our fellow Christians? How should a good Catholic
respond?
In the words of the poster, we must “keep calm and carry on.” We must carry on in the same
path Christ laid out for us 2,000 years ago. That path is as good now as it was then. It is as effective a way of
life in bad times as it is in good times. Saint Paul used another famous phrase to explain Christ’s path:
“Faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love” (1 Corinthians 13:13.)
The Parish Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe continues to help us along the path of faith, hope,
and love through numerous daily opportunities for Mass and the sacrament of reconciliation. Our parish
religious education program has resumed, showing the path to our children, and we look forward to growing
our ministry to youth and young adults. Take advantage of these opportunities, many more of which are
explained in this bulletin. As the world changes around us, sometimes in frightening ways, we can remain
firm in the faith, hope, and love of Christ!

Spiritual Life Formation
Science Explorers After-school Club conducted its first experiment this week to test the chemical reactions and states of
matter. Middle School science teacher, Danielle Hurd, facilitates this program engaging students in Grades 1-5 in
science. The first session is Pop, Bang, Fizz.
Eighth Grade students represented our school by attending the annual Diocesan Blue Mass with Bishop Dennis
Sullivan. This Mass celebrates law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services. It is beneficial for students to
experience the recognition given for the many sacrifices our first responders make serving others every day.

“I didn’t think there were Catholic Charismatics”
It is true that there are charismatic movements within many
branches of Christianity. Catholic Charismatics number 160
million. They are simply Catholics who emphasize the role of
the Holy Spirit in the personal lives of Christians and in the
public life of the Church. They believe that God gives us gifts
to lead us to personal holiness, service to others, and the
evangelization of the world.
In 1997, the Bishops of the United States published a statement
encouraging Catholic Charismatics.
In its thirty years of existence, the Catholic Charismatic
Renewal has brought personal spiritual renewal to the lives of
millions of priests, deacons, religious, and lay Catholics. It has
called countless alienated Catholics to reconciliation with the
Lord and with the Church. It has deepened a love for Jesus and
the Church among young people as well as so many others,
including the unchurched. (Grace for the New Springtime)
