WADE PROCESSION January 17, 10:00AM and 5:00PM Masses Church January 22, 2016 will mark the 43rd anniversary of Roe vs. Wade which made abortion legal and has since resulted in the deaths of more than 50 million unborn children in our country alone. Each year the Respect Life Ministry organizes a procession during Masses on Sanctity of Life Sunday. We are in need of many young helpers to represent each year of life since Roe vs. Wade. We especially need teens and those in their 20’s. If you or any of your children are able to participate in one of the Masses, please see the sign up on our parish website, go to “Quick Links/Current Volunteer Sign Ups” to sign up. Roses for Life: Small paper roses will be available for parishioners after all Masses the weekend of January 16-17, with a request to all registered voters to fill out the paper that is attached to these roses. The roses are brought to our state legislators during the March for Life on January 22 to show our support for LIFE and ask that they vote pro-life. This is a very visible sign for our legislators to help show we stand for LIFE! 4 Church of the Ascension The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph YEAR OF MERCY 5 December 27, 2015 Church of the Ascension The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph December 27, 2015 YEAR-END GIVING With the Advent season upon us and the start of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, it is an ideal time to give thanks for the many wonderful blessings received and to consider an additional gift to our parish community. Five Simple “Gift” and Year-End Tax Strategies: 1. Gift of Appreciated Stock - The last few years have seen impressive gains in equity markets. Gifts of stocks, bonds and mutual funds can be made to our parish or any Catholic entity on a tax favored basis. 2. Donor Advised Fund (DAF) - Was this a particularly good year financially or did the sale of a business, or an inherited IRA bump you into a higher tax bracket? Consider starting a family giving account (DAF) at the Catholic Foundation of Northeast Kansas (CFNEK). Lock in your deduction this year and spread your giving to our parish and multiple charities for years to come. Using appreciated stock to fund your DAF can maximize tax savings. The minimum to start your family's new DAF is $5,000. 3. Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) - Increase your lifetime income while making a gift to our parish. A CGA through the CFNEK gives you and/or your spouse income for life, and your gift helps our parish today. Turn under-performing CDs, cash or low dividend stock into reliable, tax-favored, lifetime income. 4. Life Insurance - Do you have a paid up policy or a policy with a cash value that you no longer need. Consider giving unneeded policies to our parish to help build God's everlasting kingdom during your lifetime. 5. Year-end giving ideas - Jesus reminds us to "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's" but there is no obligation to pay more taxes than required by law. Take advantage of tax strategies available to you to keep money in your pocket and to help the charitable causes you care about the most. Contact Dawnlee Maurer in the parish office 913-681-3348 for more information on year-end giving as well as planned giving. If your parish used the year A readings that were traditionally used for this feast, the second reading from Colossians has much practical advice for our families. However, while living as a family today is challenging enough, the Gospel for year C reaches a lot farther. Luke’s narrative of the twelve year old Jesus in the temple is not a warning for parents to watch their children closely while travelling. The story looks forward to the time Jesus would be “lost” in the tomb after his crucifixion. Just as his parents found him on the third day, so Jesus would rise from the dead on the third day. And Jesus’ remark, “I must be in my Father’s house” (Lk 2:49) gives us a hint at who is Jesus’ family. Luke was well aware that the Temple was considered God’s dwelling place. So to call it his Father’s house showed that Jesus was the Son of God. Keep that in mind as you look at the second reading from the First Letter of John: “we may be called children of God.” (1 Jn 3:1) Like Jesus, we call God our father, and like Jesus, we are part of a larger family than the one we live with. That family of all God’s children is the one we are called to serve. But remember Jesus was 12 in this part of the gospel. So his duty to God included being obedient to his parents. We too have a tension between obedience to our parents and following God’s call, a tension between taking care of our children and giving time to God’s children in the church and the community. At election time we have the tension of voting for candidates who will keep our family safe, or for those that help the poor or the aged. Just remember that, while we have a warm, cozy picture of the Holy Family, Jesus’ ultimate duty was to give his life for all, especially sinners. Let us ask God to help us appreciate what our family obligations really are. How is that, you ask? A unique way that Ascension students and teachers grow and stay united in faith is through our school families. Each teacher in the building is connected to a group of students K-8th grade. Each family is comprised of at least one student from each grade level, and the family stays together through the students’ entire education at ACS. The students “grow up” together! Through the year, our school families get together for prayerful times and fun activities. We participate in prayer services, Mass, crafts, games, and picnics. It is such a blessing to have a connection with each other in this truly one of a kind community. So far this school year, we have had several school family Masses, participated in a lovely prayer service, and we have learned about Saints when our 8th grade family member shared his/her saint’s project; furthermore, we shared reflections around Advent wreaths in preparation for the season. Ascension Catholic School looks forward to the activities planned by the School Family Committee and cherishes the time we spend together across grade levels. If you have any questions or would like to receive information regarding upcoming Women of Ascension projects and activities, please contact Teresa Davis at tdavis12120@kc.rr.com or 913-526-4570.
