GUNNISON VALLEY YOUTH
FIDDLERS
The Gunnison Valley Youth Fiddlers is back again for
its second year! Instructed by Drew Murdza, Laura
Anderson and Jenny Hill, students will get to be a part of the
youth strings group focusing on learning the violin, viola,
cello or upright bass. Instruction will follow the Suzuki
method of teaching. In this encouraging and creative, fun
environment students will learn from the ground up in their
respective instruments and share in all musical traditions
from classical to bluegrass to rock and beyond! Tuesday lessons will be held in a group class room setting and
Thursdays will be 30 minute private lessons every other
week. Students must provide their own instrument and
music book. Please visit the GAC’s website for more information on how to size your child for their instrument, where
to purchase their instrument and music book. This fall
semester will culminate a sensational concert for friends,
fa.m.ily and the community to enjoy. This class will take
place in the Gunnison Arts Center Music Studio needing a
minimum of 6 students to run for the fall semester. T h i s
class is $210 for the semester and $25 for a sibling discount.
Scholarships and payment plans are available. A Holiday
concert will held on Sunday, December 13th in the Gunnison
Arts Center Black Box Theatre. There is an suggested entry

The Whipstitch Sallies, described as “bluegrass rockers with panache”, is a group of young women who command the stage with their electrifying presence, traditional
instruments, and tight harmonies. Allie Burbrink drives the
rhythm on open-back banjo and guitar. Sa.m. Herrin’s blistering mandolin licks and Katie Burk’s spirited fiddle leads
kick up an exuberant racket that is rooted in mountain
music but informed by styles from country and jazz to indie
rock.
Free The Honey is a homegrown folk quartet on the
western slope of Colorado and offers up old time and original tunes with richly layered vocal harmonies and authentic
acoustic resonance. The elements are fa.m.iliar – harmony
singing, twin fiddle, open back banjo, guitar, mandolin, storytelling, and mountain culture. The alchemy is all their
own. It is a sound inspired by place, community, and deep
musical traditions. It revives in the listener a connection to
the simple goodness of life, the medicine of string and wood
and voice. The band cultivates a pure quality to let the
instruments and stories speak plain and true.
This electrifying show is taking place September 15th.
Tickets are $15 and doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert
starts at 7:00 p.m.

DEVON CONE ARTIST RECEPTION: SATURDAY,
SEPTEMBER 5. 5 – 6 P.M. FREE
What does it mean to “belong” somewhere? If you
don’t belong - what is it you long for most? What do you use
in your life to ground you? How do you thrive as an outsider?
Devon Cone’s , exhibit “Be-longing” uses images to explore
the way in which refugees have re-conceptualized the nature
of belonging. Through photos taken in various parts of the
world, it highlights the way in which people survive and adapt
and re-establish their lives within the paradox of the refugee
condition - a permanent state of limbo. The photographer’s
own journey is also documented through places and communities where she certainly did not belong, but in which she has
found the greatest sense of self and connection to others. At
the Piper Gallery. Show runs August 31 – September 14.

Last Chance for Public Input
on Colorado’s
Water Plan
The Colorado Water Conservation
Board (CWCB) seeks final citizen
input on the new (and next-to-last)
draft of the statewide water plan.
All individuals and organizations
must submit their comments by
SEPTEMBER 17.
Not sure what is in the Water Plan, or why you should care?
State officials anticipate that by mid-century Colorado’s population might double, during a time when climate scientists
predict diminished water resources, causing a gap between future demands and developed supplies.
The Water Plan is a ‘roadmap and toolbox’ for addressing that gap, as well as the water needs for agriculture, the
environment, and recreation. With a 2050 planning horizon, it will be your children’s water plan too.
Colorado’s Water Plan is available online at coloradowaterplan.com (click on ‘Resources’).
The Gunnison Basin Roundtable has also prepared a Citizen’s Guide to the Water Plan,
available at the Colorado Mesa University Water Center - www.coloradomesa.edu/watercenter.
You’ll find information there on how to comment on the Plan - by September 17!

FOR BABIES. It should take place

Doing this regularly will help

TUMMY TIME IS IMPORTANT
FOR BABIES. It should take place
when your infant is awake and
alert. Place baby on tummy on a
solid surface, place a toy in front
of him and engage him in play.
Doing this regularly will help
strengthen the neck muscles and
promote brain development.
