October 2011 Co-location with CAMEX extended to 2017
Mark Palmore
Executive Director
CAMEX 2011 in Houston was the tenth anniversary of Connect2One and NACS co-locating our meetings together at CAMEX. If you were there, you know it was another great meeting.
It further proved to us, our members and our vendor partners
that the co-location continues to be an excellent way to blend
the value of Connect2One membership and CAMEX together in
one single meeting.
Knowing that the co-location is truly a “win-win” for both
NACS and Connect2One, Paula Haerr, Associate Executive
Director and I traveled to Oberlin to meet with the NACS Meetings and Expositions staff led by Hugh Easley, Vice President
of Meetings and Expositions, Mary Adler-Kozak - Director of
Expositions, and Jodie Wilmot – Director of Meetings. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss extending our agreement for
another five years.
We are very pleased to announce that Connect2One and
NACS have agreed to extend our co-location agreement until
2017. We are very excited about this extension and look forward to working with NACS to continue to be a vital part of
making CAMEX the premier event in our industry.
C2O booth circa 2011. Look for our new booth to be unveiled at CAMEX 2012.
As we move forward with NACS and CAMEX, I would like
to take a minute to reflect on the past. Sometimes it seems like
just yesterday when my colleagues and I, under the leader-
Connect2One Booth Circa 2002
ship of then Connect2One Executive Director Dick Welsh, were
planning our first co-location at CAMEX 2002 in downtown Los
Angeles.
We were not exactly sure what to expect because for many
years Connect2One (we were called Collegiate Stores Cooperative or CSC in those days) held our own very successful Buying
Show and Annual Meeting. However, we all had faith in Dick
Welsh’s vision to make the strategic move to co-locate our meeting with NACS. He saw the writing on the wall that store travel
budgets would tighten and that vendors were struggling with
the costs of booth fees, travel, hotel and other expenses related
to attending two major shows in the same time frame. This courageous decision truly made a difference for the future of our
industry and Connect2One.
You will learn more about the Connect2One Education Day
at CAMEX 2012 in Salt Lake City throughout this and future issues of Connections. I sincerely hope you have already budgeted
to attend what will be a great meeting full of new products, new
ideas, and new opportunities for all.
See you in Salt Lake City, our eleventh co-location with CAMEX…how time flies when you’re having fun!

Solutions to Facebook’s Contest Rules
Rob McLeod
Connect2One Staff
Over our first year on Facebook we have
watched our member stores run a variety of
fun, creative, and entertaining contests that
have kept fans both involved and engaged.
Word games, mystery photos, random
drawings, trivia questions, bingo, etc. have
all been big hits. But while these are great
ways to draw attention to your Facebook
page, they may now be against the rules.
In short, Facebook’s Promotion Guidelines state that “You must not use Facebook
features or functionality as a promotion’s
registration or entry mechanism. For
example, the act of liking a Page … cannot
automatically register or enter a promotion
participant.” Whenever you run a contest
where a prize is awarded, it must contain
a statement fully releasing Facebook from any liability, and
all contests must be run through a third party app. Since the
FBML app is part of Facebook and not run by a third party, it
is also not allowed to be used for contest promotions.
Thankfully, there are plenty of third party options available. Easy to use apps from Easypromos, Wildfire, North Social, Fan Appz, Offerpop and others comply with Facebook’s
regulations. Fees are based on the amount of fans you have,
how many campaigns you run, and the number of days a promotion runs. Many of the plans are relatively inexpensive.
Of course, traditional routes of promoting contests, like
inviting students via Facebook to sign up for a contest in the
store, on your homepage, on a blog, or via e-mail are still allowed and effective. But the most promising options are free
social media sites like Twitter.
Twitter lacks the stringent regulations that have hampered contests on Facebook. With its new “add a picture”
option, Twitter provides a visual component to enhance
your contest promotion. Simply promote the contest on your
Twitter account and link your Twitter feed to your Facebook
page. As long as the winner is notified via methods other
than Facebook, you can still post pictures of winners on
Facebook.
Facebook asserts that any failure to comply with these
rules could result in shutting down your application, page,
or even your entire account. With such a serious penalty and
with viable alternatives out there, this risk is not worth taking. For a comprehensive discussion of the topic, visit www.
socialmediaexaminer.com/facebook-promotions-what-youneed-to-know/.

Music to My Ears!
Announcing the Bridgecraft USA Program
Paula Haerr
Associate Executive Director
For the past several years, we’ve
heard of the tremendous success a few
buyers have had selling musical instruments in their stores. We are very pleased
to announce that Bridgecraft USA will be
part of the Connect2One programs.
Steve Kalchik, supply buyer at the University of California San Diego was one of the first
to discover Bridgecraft USA at a Las Vegas trade
show. At first testing out a few basic items, Steve has
now expanded UCSD Bookstore’s selection to include
acoustic guitars, electric guitars with amps, 54 and 61
key keyboards, bongos and tambourines. Accessories
like picks, strings and tuners have also been added to the
assortment. Surprise success? Ukeleles. Best seller? The
GA38 Huntington acoustic guitar at a C2O price starting at
$26.50 each.
Based on the sell-thru at several college stores including
USC and UC Santa Barbara, Bridgecraft has customized a selection of over 300 items for C2O members. Minimum order is
only one piece so you only need to bring in “one to show and
one to go”. While there is a case price break, it is best to be
cautious in starting out your assortment. When placing
your order, be sure to designate your preferred freight
carrier as all products ship FOB: La Mirada, California. The Bridgecraft customer service department
can also advise you on best freight options.

Clear View Bag … Family Owned for 50 Years!
Mark Palmore
Executive Director
It was just 50 years ago when
a small family company was
founded to manufacture custom shopping bags in upstate
New York. That company, Clear
View Bag Company, has grown,
but it is still family owned and
operated with manufacturing
facilities in Albany, N.Y. and
Thomasville, N.C. Specializing
in lower-volume custom work,
Clear View has been in the
college store market for more
than seven years and serves
more than 100 college stores
throughout the country.
In addition to being a domestic manufacturer and a family-owned company, Clear View
Bag is very proud of its use of recycled content, biodegradable
materials, and water-based inks. It truly is a company that
cares about the environment and the future of our planet. The
company’s “sustainable bag,” which
is a down gauged version of the typical larger poly bag with
strengtheners to maintain strength and performance, has two
other major benefits. Clear View Bag uses 10% fewer resources
to manufacture the bags, and they cost less because there is less
actual material used to produce the bags. Clear View must be
on to something because the “sustainable bag” is used by many
schools throughout the
country as their everyday
in-store shopping bag.
If you haven’t had the opportunity to meet with or
communicate with Trent
Romer or anyone on the
Clear View Bag team, I recommend you e-mail him for
a quote on your next shopping bag order. You’ll be glad
you did. You can reach Trent
via e-mail at trentromer@
clearviewbag.com or call
The sustainable bag is used by many
college stores, including The Cornell Store. him at 518-458-7153
ext 234.
Today’s busy college students demand healthier choices when it comes to food on the go. No longer are items from the
vending machines the right choice for most students.
With Grab & Go Market by College Store Design, you are able to quickly meet the ever-changing and demanding needs of
today’s college students. Our Grab & Go Market modular xture concept allows you to offer your students an unlimited array
of fresh, organic, nutritious, and locally prepared food items in an easily-implemented modular xture layout. What you offer
in the Grab & Go Market is up to you.
The Grab & Go Market modular solution is designed to t into any available and under-utilized square footage, no matter the
size or shape by using College Store Design’s tried and true modular xture system. Whether you have available space in your

Welcome!
Freight Shipping
Tip of the Month
Join us in welcoming the following
new Connect2One member!
Oversized Items
An oversize fee is the most
common cause of freight price
adjustments. If your shipment
exceeds 12 feet in length, your
freight may be charged an
oversize fee by some carriers.
This is because an oversize
freight load places additional
responsibilities on the freight carrier. To avoid an oversize fee,
know the length of your freight and check with your carrier or
3PL in advance of pickup to determine if your freight shipment
will qualify for the oversize fee.

Kudos to Top Flight
In the wake of disasters, it’s the people who rise to
the call to help that inspire us. Even though it has been
months since Joplin, Missouri was hit by an F-5 tornado,
families are still struggling in the aftermath.
This tip is brought to you by C2O’s preferred shipping partner Group
Transportation Services (GTS). For more information or to enroll, email
c2o@onestopshipping.com.
When Mike Robinson, vp of sales at Top Flight heard
that children were in need of supplies for classes, he
responded with a trailer load of notebooks and paper.
Little did Mike know, the September 5, 2011 issue of
People magazine profiled the continued relief efforts in
the area; photo images included volunteers unloading
boxes of Top Flight notebooks.
A number of schools were helped including Joplin
East Middle School which had only completed its first
year in service when the tornado hit. Temporarily reestablished in an industrial park building, the school
welcomed back students with the supplies so generously
donated by Top Flight and many others. Well done!

Exclusive Connect2One Members’ Guide to CAMEX 2012
October 2011 Schedule Tweaks for 2012 Salt Lake City
Each year as we prepare for the Connect2One co-location,
we carefully review the evaluation comments turned in at the
past year’s education day as well as the online survey results.
Likewise, each city we go to for our event offers different opportunities. As a result, we are tweaking our event schedule
with the following adjustments to maximize your experience.
Connect2One 101 Orientation Session
Holding this session prior to the C2O Welcome Reception
last year proved to be very popular with those who had never
attended a C2O education day as well as with some industry
veterans who wanted to brush up on their over-all knowledge
of C2O services. We’re doing a lightning round version in 2012,
condensing the info into 30 minutes.
Start Your Day Your Way
With so many attendees coming from a variety of time zones,
we have opted for Thursday morning breakfast on-your-own.
Sessions will start promptly at 8:30 am.
Split Session – Supplies In-Depth Review
In 2012, Paula Haerr’s Supplies In-Depth Review will cover
information previously presented by the individual vendors. To
allow enough time for Paula to review all the vendor programs
in all the supply categories, we will break the usual Supply InDepth Review into two sessions. The 8:30 – 10:00 session will
cover art supplies, tech products and health science products.
The 10:15 – 11:45 session will cover school and office supply
categories including paper, binders, and writing instruments.
