All September long we geek BANNED AND CHALLENGED BOOKS! Be on the lookout for programs and displays designed to celebrate these “troublesome” titles. Some books that have been banned or challenged For the entire month of September, come to the library and have your mug shot taken holding your favorite Banned Book! Our director, Sue Goldberg, is an outlaw for reading Harry Potter! include: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White and the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. Friends of the Library Annual Membership Drive Friends of the Library is now holding its Annual Membership Drive for the 2014/2015 year and they are looking to increase their membership! There are five types of memberships: 1. Individual 2. Family 3. Senior Citizen (65+) and Student (18 and under) 4. Patron 5. Corporate Applications are available online at www.elwoodlibrary.org on the Friends of the EPL page. Fall Book Sale The Friends of the Elwood Public Library Fall Book Sale will be held on Saturday, September 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, September 21 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Elwood Public Library. Help with setup the day before Saturday’s event and take-down on Monday morning is greatly appreciated. Please leave your name at the Reference Desk or email elwoodfriend@optonline.net. Long Island Coalition for the Homeless: The Long Island Coalition for the Homeless will be collecting school supplies for homeless students until August 15. SEPTEMBER TEEN PROGRAMMING With Elwood Public Library’s Teen Summer Reading Program! There’s still time! Teens in grades 6-12 have until August 30 to win prizes for reading. Teens will receive a prize for each book read up to four books. For the fifth book read, the library will purchase a paperback novel of the teen’s choosing for them to keep! Come join us to preserve your photos and memories and create a beautiful scrapbook page. You supply some photos (parents: please be aware that these photos will be glued onto paper and may be cut as well), and we will embellishments and glue so that you can add your own style. 5 Adult Programs Book Discussions Morning Book Discussions are held the second Wednesday of every month at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 13 – The Butterfly’s Daughter by Mary Alice Monroe. This novel follows the transformational stories of four women inspired by the annual migration of monarch butterflies. One of the women, Luz, returns to her late grandmother’s Mexican village and unexpectedly encounters the mother she had believed dead. Wednesday, September 10 – The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman. This novel is set on a remote Australian island, where a childless couple lives quietly, running a lighthouse until a boat carrying a baby washes ashore. The choices they make shape their lives and the lives of others. Evening Book Discussions are held the third Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 20 – The Dinner by Herman Koch. Two couples meet at a fashionable restaurant for dinner in Amsterdam. Between mouthfuls of food and over the polite scrapings of cutlery, the conversation remains a gentle hum of polite discourse. Behind the empty words, however, terrible things need to be said, and with every forced smile and every new course, the knives are being sharpened. The heart-wrenching story of a young black girl in the early 20th century who’s forced into a brutal marriage and separated from her sister. An individualistic former boxing champion defies the attempts of Army officers and men to break him when he refuses to fight on the company’s boxing team. The story of the migration of the Joad family to California from their dust-bowl farm in Oklahoma during the Great Depression.
