Book Discussions
Morning Book Discussions are held the second Wednesday of
every month at 10:30 a.m.
Wednesday, June 11 – Killing Jesus by Bill O’Reilly and
Martin Dugard. Now the anchor of The O’Reilly Factor details
the events leading up to the murder of the most influential
man in history: Jesus of Nazareth. Nearly 2,000 years after this
beloved and controversial young revolutionary was brutally
killed by Roman soldiers, more than 2.2 billion people attempt
to follow his teachings and believe he is God. Killing Jesus will
take readers inside Jesus’s life, recounting the seismic political
and historical events that made his death inevitable – and
changed the world forever.
Wednesday, July 9 – The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer.
Paris, 1937. Andras Lévi, a Hungarian-Jewish architecture
student, arrives from Budapest with a scholarship, a single
suitcase, and a mysterious letter he promised to deliver.
But when he falls into a complicated relationship with the
letter’s recipient, he becomes privy to a secret that will alter
the course of his – and his family’s – history. From the small
Hungarian town of Konyár to the grand opera houses of
Budapest and Paris, from the despair of Carpathian winter to
an unimaginable life in labor camps, The Invisible Bridge tells
the story of a family shattered and remade in history’s darkest
hour.
Evening Book Discussions are held the third Wednesday of
every month at 7:00 p.m.
Wednesday, June 18 – Lost in Shangri La by Mitchell Zuckoff
unleashes the exhilarating, untold story of an extraordinary
World War II rescue mission, where a plane crash in the South
Pacific plunged a trio of U.S. military personnel into a land
that time forgot.
Wednesday, July 16 – How the Light Gets In by Louise
Penny. “There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light
gets in.” —Leonard Cohen
Christmas is approaching, and in Québec it’s a time of dazzling
snowfalls, bright lights and gatherings with friends in front of
blazing hearths. But shadows are falling on the usually festive
season for Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. Most of his best
agents have left the Homicide Department, his old friend and
lieutenant Jean-Guy Beauvoir hasn’t spoken to him in months,
and hostile forces are lining up against him. When Gamache
receives a message from Myrna Landers that a longtime friend
has failed to arrive for Christmas in the village of Three Pines,
he welcomes the chance to get away from the city. Mystified by
Myrna’s reluctance to reveal her friend’s name, Gamache soon
discovers the missing woman was once one of the most famous
people not just in North America, but in the world, and now
goes unrecognized by virtually everyone except the mad,
brilliant poet Ruth Zardo.
