Following Christ's example, we seek through a variety of ministries, to know, love and serve God and one another. HOLY CROSS MAY 20, 2012 FAIRVIEW, PA SOME CLARIFICATIONS ABOUT CREMATION On several occasions in recent months I have had to deal with some serious misunderstandings about what the Catholic Church allows regarding cremation. Church teaching regarding cremation is founded upon the same principle regarding the burial of a body: When a loved one dies, we believe that the body, once a temple of the Holy Spirit, is sacred and is to be treated with respect and dignity. for personal keeping or display. Again, the entire cremains are to be buried as part of the funeral rites of the Church. 7. Because of our faith in the resurrection of Christ, no matter how much in our grief we might want to hold onto someone we love who has died, in our faith we are to commend them into the loving hands of God who will raise them up body and soul. Therefore, the Church teaches: 1. Although at one time cremation was forbidden, it is now allowed; however it is preferable for the cremation to take place after the funeral liturgy rather than before it. 2. The cremains (the technical term for the ashes) are to be treated in the same way that the body of a deceased loved one is treated. Therefore, what we would not do to a body, we do not do to cremains. 3. The entire cremains are to be immediately buried in consecrated ground in a cemetery or placed in a cemetery mausoleum. Cremains are not just ashes. These are the remains of a human person, the earthly dwelling of one filled with God’s Holy Spirit. While our consumerist culture will always think of new ways to make a profit off of death, as Catholics who recognize the sacredness of every human person and every human body, we cannot cave in to trends and market ploys that emerge around death and burial. Father Scott 4. Cremains cannot be spread on the ground somewhere else or upon a body of water. 5. The cremains are NOT to be separated and divided amongst family members or friends. 6. No cremains are to be put in amulets, jewelry, vials, or urns and retained by family members LITURGICAL MINISTERS FOR SUNDAY, MAY 27, 2012 5:00 PM 8:00 AM 10:00 AM LECTOR: Carl Waterhouse, Gerald Drabina Thomas Shuttleworth, Tim Wachter Tim Healy, Dave Waples CO-ORD: Patty Drabina Gretchen Prozan Suzanne Sitzler, Dave/Chris Nerthling EUCH.
