“I tell you, Peter, before the
cock crows this day, you will
deny three times that you
know me.“ (Luke 22:34)
This Holy Week, let us reflect
upon how often we deny that
we know Jesus by the ways
that we decide to use our time, our talent and our treasure.

Habemus Papam! We Have a Pope!
I can still remember hearing those words eight years ago
when Cardinal Ratzinger was elected Pope and took the
name Benedict XVI. I never forgot how I felt when he
stood at the window as I watched it from my television at
home. Well, this time, I also watched it from television,
but it was at an airport in Chicago, Illinois, on my way
back from Italy. Our group of 36 pilgrims joked that,
with our luck, we’d be on the plane coming home when
the new pope was elected. That’s exactly what happened.
What a great time we had taking photos of cardinals as
they walked across St. Peter’s Square, in preparation for
the conclave. Even more than feeling disappointed, we
all felt a special connection to Pope Francis. Habemus
Papam was one reason. We have a pope! But the greater
connection was that we fell in love again with St. Francis
as we spent two days in Assisi, visiting his tomb and
learning about his life. We left Assisi wanting more of
this little slice of heaven. So, when we heard that Francis
was the name chosen, we were ecstatic! The name meant
something to us, and it always will. We now have a
deeper connection to Francis, who loved Jesus Christ so
dearly and became his humble servant, giving the poor his
fullest attention and living that way himself.
On this Palm Sunday, we
recall Jesus humbly entering
Jerusalem on a donkey, not
on a big war horse, as a true
king at that time would have
done. Jesus had nothing.
Francis had nothing. When
we look at the connection between Jesus and Francis, I
hope it makes us look twice at our own lives. Why do
WE have to have the biggest and newest and best? Jesus
didn’t. Francis didn’t. Is there something we can change
in our own lives to follow more closely to what Jesus and
St. Francis are calling us to? A more simple life? Paying
more attention to the poor and needy? I wonder if we
even know how greatly that would change us. Would it be
hard? Yes. But the bigger question is this: Do we want to
change? Do we have the prayer life to change the way we
live? Because it would take that--a solid life of prayer.
I hope we will all watch closely what Pope Francis will
do to “rebuild the church.” He will step forward quickly
and humbly. We can choose to follow his lead or live the
way of the world. I hope and pray that we, as a parish,
will choose to follow him because I believe he has been
called at this time in history by the spirit of God.
Did you know that St. Francis received his stigmata (the
wounds of Jesus Christ) in September, near the Feast of
the Exaltation of the Holy Cross? We are Holy Cross!

Faith Formation News
Deacon Bruce led the Faith Formation students in the
Stations of the Cross. Stations are a great way to reflect
during Lent. The stations remind us of the suffering and
humanity of Jesus and of the love that led him to the cross.
The “fifteenth” station is the altar, where we recall the
promise of resurrection, first fulfilled in Jesus. During
Lent, Holy Cross offers Stations of the Cross every Sunday
at 1:00 pm. Come and reflect as a family.

million thanks to you. Your
contributions have enabled me
and all the instructors I work with to bring Christ’s
message to the people. I thank you because every day I see
the fruits of your generosity."
— Julianne Donlon Stanz, Green Bay Diocesan Offices
Over the last three years, Julianne has helped conduct over
140 programs on topics like the sacraments, United States
Catholic Catechism for Adults and theology. These
programs are about learning and bringing Christ’s message
to people. More than 6,000 people from across the Diocese
have been impacted through these programs. Julianne's
ministry is funded through the Bishop’s Appeal.
Operation Rice Bowl (Catholic Relief Services)
Twenty-five percent of contributions to CRS Rice Bowl remain in our diocese, helping to support local poverty and hunger
programs. This week, we pray for people in our own community who struggle with poverty and hunger. Give to your Rice
Bowl to support programs that help the poor in our own community, as well as communities around the world. Please
count the money in your rice bowls and make a check payable to Holy Cross Parish. Write “CRS Rice Bowl” on the
memo line. Bring or mail your check to Holy Cross Parish, 309 Desnoyer St., Kaukauna, WI 54130, or drop it in the
collection next week. Your donations are so appreciated and necessary. Thank you!

Parish Ministry Highlight
There are many wonderful ministries at Holy Cross, and
you may not be aware of them. One important ministry is
the Adult Faith Enrichment Committee. A group of
faith-filled men and women who are excited about their
faith meet once a month to discuss and plan events for
parishioners to help them grow in their faith lives. The
group plans events like the “Catholicism” DVD series,
local speakers like Fr. Jack Mullarkey, diocesan speakers
like Julianne Donlon and special events like the upcoming
“Behold the Lamb” Concert which will be held during
Advent of 2013. The group has lots of fun and gets things
done. Members are Fr. Tom Pomeroy, Mary Ebben,
Mary Vande Hey, Tony Vosters, Julie Bastian, Ann
St. John and Carol Beatty. If you would like to be part of
this dynamic group, contact Kim at 766-3773. Helping
others find Christ is a wonderful ministry -- join us.
To show their appreciation for the dedicated staff at
KCSS, the Board of Trustees recently hosted a staff
luncheon at the Prime Steer. The list of honorees includes:
Judy Rogers - 35 years, Laurie Pichee - 30 years, Becky
Haen - 20 years, Lisa Ortner and Karen Buskager - 15
years, Susan Onkels - 10 years.
Thank you and congratulations!
St. Francis of Assisi
St. Francis of Assisi is the first recorded
stigmatic in Christian history. In 1224,
two years before his death, he embarked
on a journey to Mt. La Verna for a fortyday fast. One morning near the feast of
the Exaltation of the Cross, a six-winged
angel allegedly appeared to Francis
while he prayed. As the angel
approached, Francis could see that the
angel was crucified. He was humbled by
the sight, and his heart was filled with elation joined by
pain and suffering. When the angel departed, Francis was
purportedly left with wounds in his hands, feet and side as
if caused by the same lance that pierced Christ’s side. The
image of nails immediately appeared in his hands and feet,
and the wound in his side often seeped blood.
St. Francis' first biographer, Thomas of Celano, reports the
event as follows in his 1230 First Life of St. Francis:
"When the blessed servant of God saw these things he was
filled with wonder, but he did not know what the vision
meant. He rejoiced greatly in the benign and gracious
expression with which he saw himself regarded by the
seraph, whose beauty was indescribable; yet he was
alarmed by the fact that the seraph was affixed to the cross
and was suffering terribly. Thus Francis rose, one might
say, sad and happy, joy and grief alternating in him.
He wondered anxiously what this vision could mean, and
his soul was uneasy as it searched for understanding. And
as his understanding sought in vain for an explanation and
his heart was filled with perplexity at the great novelty of
this vision, the marks of nails began to appear in his hands
and feet, just as he had seen them slightly earlier in the
crucified man above him. His wrists and feet seemed to be
pierced by nails, with the heads of the nails appearing on
his wrists and on the upper sides of his feet, the points
appearing on the other side. The marks were round on the
palm of each hand but elongated on the other side, and
small pieces of flesh jutting out from the rest took on the
appearance of the nail-ends, bent and driven back. In the
same way the marks of nails were impressed on his feet
and projected beyond the rest of the flesh. Moreover, his
right side had a large wound as if it had been pierced with
a spear, and it often bled so that his tunic and trousers were
soaked with his sacred blood." St Francis - Pray for us...
