Rectory Hours 7:30 a.m.—3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday Emergency Pager: 815-724-6151 Patiently Awaiting Judgment Ma hew, more than any other evangelist, talks about Jesus leaving and returning home. O en Jesus leaves the house because crowds have assembled outside and want to be taught. Today, a er having taught and dismissed the crowds, his disciples follow him home, seeking further explana on of what seem to be, at least to us today, pre y straigh orward parables. Parish Website: www.stjosephjoliet.org For both Ma hew and Mark, when Jesus is in the house with his disciples it signals a special teaching moment, and it should cause us today to perk up our ears. Usually it is Jesus giving commonsense advice about what it will mean to follow him. Today is no different. To follow Jesus means to be ready to encounter the followers of evil, to have to live and work and preach among them. It means pa ently awai ng the judgment that can only come from God, the judgment of justly deciding who will be thrown into the flame and who will live to be a brightly shining saint. Let us heed this house-teaching, for it will be the same for us who follow Jesus Christ today. Catholic Church, Joliet, Illinois Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. JMJ Dear Parishioners and Friends, When I was in the seminary, especially during high school and the first couple of years of college, we were able to go home for the summer. Before we could leave, however, the Forma on Director and Prior of the community, would lecture us on our expected behavior during these summer months. We were expected to fraternize only with those people who were able to set a good example, con nue our spiritual disciplines like daily prayer and Mass, and commit ourselves to some type of apostolic work. All of this was fine, but they would always end their talk with the following phrase: “remember, there is no vaca on from your voca on.” We would all nod our heads and head home to family and friends as fast as possible. As the years have passed, I have o en reflected on the significance of these words, as corny as they may sound. At its very heart is the fact that each of us is called to live a life that is shaped by our voca onal call, our own personal vocaons and our common voca ons through bap sm. God intends each of us to play a unique role in carrying out His divine plan. The challenge, then, is to understand our voca on—clergy, religious, laity; married, single, adult, child— and to respond generously to this call from God. Our voca ons require from each of us a daily commitment. Each and every day we are given the opportunity and obliga on to once again say “yes” to God and to choose to embrace the voca ons that He has given us. Mature disciples make a conscious decision to follow Jesus, no ma er the cost (Lk 9: 23-25). All of you are very important in the life of our parish family. I don't think most of you realize how much you are needed. You are not just a name on our parish registry, but an integral part of the Body of Christ. When you embrace your voca ons with fidelity, confidence and enthusiasm it helps to define who we are. You are able to priori ze what’s important in your lives and guide your decision-making. Summer vaca on is not a me to get away from your obliga ons as Catholics. Rather, it is a chance to gain new perspec ve and to recharge your spiritual ba eries, so as to be er live the voca ons to which you have been called. The slower pace of summer doesn’t change your voca ons, but it does present most of you with the opportunity to serve God and others in different ways. Use this special me to deepen the spiritual lives of yourself and family members. Keep God at the center of all your ac vi es, especially Sunday worship. Vaca on is not the me to forget your obligaons, but a me to double down, to offer to God more of yourself. It’s true, there is no vaca on from your voca on! Wishing you a wonderful week of work and prayer. May God bless you and all those you love, Fr. Timothy P. Andres, O.Carm.
