Immaculate Conception — St. Joseph Parish · Leavenworth, KS Requesting Our Prayers Support Our Troops With Your Prayers! LTJG Jake McDaniel LTC Melanie Meier AJ Curtis Perkins A1C William H. Sample SGT Michael Wall Elijah’s Supper Update What many volunteers thought was going to be a slow night on Thursday, August 7, resulted in 448 meals, provided to the less fortunate. We get many individuals expressing to me their appreciation for our community meals, and while it would be easy to take credit, these meals could not be possible without your support and that of all the fantastic volunteers who monthly give their time and talent to this ministry. God has once again give us the opportunity to serve others and we are grateful to Him for allowing us to do so. Thanks again for your support. Mitzie Frietchen Message for Our Homebound Parishioners If you are a homebound parishioner, we would like the opportunity to deliver to you a freshly prepared meal on the first Thursday of each month. Although this is the same night as our Elijah’s Supper, this offer has nothing to do with your economic status. Since we are preparing meals on that night, it would be an ideal time to help many who have, in their earlier years, worked so hard to make our parish the success that it is. Please do not hesitate to call the Parish Office, 913-682-3953, if you would like us to prepare a meal and deliver it to you. It is one way we can say “thank you” for being so dedicated to our Catholic community. We look forward to hearing from you! If you know someone who is interested in the Catholic Church, be sure to ask them to come on this Wednesday evening. In Loving Memory We offer our prayers and sympathy to the family and friends of Louis Andrew Pierron, who died on Saturday, August 1, 2015. Louis was a long-time parishioner of St. Joseph Church. A small family service will be held at a later date. May Louis find eternal happiness in the arms of his loving Lord. Baptism We are happy to welcome Colton James Vroman into the Catholic Faith through the waters of Baptism. Colton is the young son of James L. and Marissa (Cook) Vroman. Fr. David McEvoy, O.Carm. baptized Colton at St. Joseph Church on August 9, 2015. He is the great-grandson of Dusty and Margaret Ann Cook. Congratulations to the family! It’s time to think about the Annual St. Joseph Bazaar and Roast Beef Dinner! This year it will be on Sunday, September 20, 2015. Soon, a letter with raffle tickets and information about this year’s fundraiser will be sent to each registered parish family. Please consider signing up to help with the many activities needing volunteers! 3 August 16, 2015 - Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time 4 This Week in our Parish Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This Sunday we listen to the fourth of five consecutive Sunday Gospels from the Sixth Chapter of the Gospel of John known as the “Bread of Life Discourse.” Jesus said, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world (John 6:51-52).” As we gather for Mass this weekend, let us never take for granted the great spiritual gift of the Eucharist. Last Tuesday evening, August 11, the ladies of the St. Joseph Altar Society hosted a great pot-luck dinner and birthday party, honoring all three of us Leavenworth Carmelites, who are turning over another year in the next few weeks. The three of us together will be clocking in a total of 177 years! I’d like to say that I will soon be 39 and Fr. Tom and Brother David will each be 69, but I guess I better tell the truth in the parish bulletin! To set the record straight, I will be turning 63 next Saturday, August 22. Fr. Tom will turn 54 on Tuesday, September 1 (a mere youth!). And Brother David, who was particularly “roasted” and toasted at the Altar Society dinner, will hit the big 60 on Thursday, September 17. As a scientific study once proved, birthdays are actually good for you. The people who have the most live the longest! I’d like to particularly salute my “birthday buddies” — fellow parishioners who will also be celebrating their birthdays on August 22—Helen Naylon (#95), Mary Suppes (#85), Teresa Lee and Jim Grosdidier (both #54). It’s good to know that we are all in this together! As you can see from the photo on the front of today’s bulletin, the St. Joseph’s Quilting Ladies have done it again! This is their 25th annual quilt to be raffled at the upcoming St. Joseph Bazaar. It won both blue and white ribbons at the recent Leavenworth County Fair in Tonganoxie. You will soon be able to purchase a raffle ticket for $1.00 or 12 for $10.00 after the weekend Masses. The raffle will be held on Bazaar Day — September 20. Our first Bazaar Planning Meeting was held this past Wednesday evening, August 12. Joe and Suzanne O’Neil and Theresa Williams are chairing this year’s Bazaar. Mark your calendars now and plan on joining us for our biggest annual parish fund raiser! As you know, Pope Francis will soon be making an historic pastoral visit to the United States, September 22—27. While in Washington, DC, he will meet with President Obama at the White House, address the US Congress, and canonize Blessed Junipero Serra, the Franciscan missionary to California, at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Traveling to New York, he will address the United Nations General Assembly, visit the 9/11 Memorial, and celebrate Mass at Madison Square Garden. Finally in Philadelphia, he will be attending the World Meeting of Families, with a huge outdoor Mass, before returning to Rome on September 27. Pray for the success of his visit! God bless you always! Fr. August 16, 2015 - Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time AUGUST 2015 Dear Jesus, Divine Physician and Healer of the Sick, we turn to You in this time of illness. O dearest comforter of the troubled, alleviate our worry and sorrow with Your gentle love, and grant us the grace and strength to accept this burden. Dear God, we place our worries in Your hands.
