SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
We welcome those who entered
our Catholic faith
through the waters of Baptism:
Liam Christopher Royer
&
Evan Jude Voorhies
WILL YOUR WISHES BE KNOWN?
A bequest to St. Joseph Parish, Rayne Catholic
Elementary or Notre Dame High School affords a
way for you to express specific philanthropic
wishes. A bequest may be made by naming a
specific dollar amount, a percentage of the estate or
specific assets.
The spirit is given a voice when
wishes are expressed in a Will.
While many may think philanthropy is reserved for
a select few, the truth is that every bequest makes a
mark that will last throughout history. Please pray
for guidance when planning your estate.

Bishop’s Services Appeal 40th Anniversary
Shine the light of Christ
Each one of us is called through our common Baptism, to be a light to the world and to do
our share in implementing the victory Jesus won on the Cross.
While we cannot always be the one to comfort the grieving, bring hope to the socially oppressed, teach the young and
reach out to those in need, we can—through our generosity ensure that our Diocesan Church is strong and vibrant so
that it is able to meet the needs of so many in the year ahead.
The Bishop’s Services Appeal provides the financial lifeblood for a broad range of ministries, apostolates and outreach
programs. Your generous gift can and will make a difference to the least among us.
May the Lord bless you on the day of your birth and fill your life with much happiness.

other in order to grow spiritually and emotionally.

"Human rights are
not only violated by terrorism,
repression or assassination,
but also by unfair
economic structures
that creates huge inequalities!"
We Are Unprofitable Servants
For many years I thought I was “somebody” in the Church. I had even imagined the Church’s living structure as a temple sustained by many columns, large and small, each one with the shoulder of a Christian under
it. My own shoulder, too, I thought of as supporting a column, however small.
Then after twenty-five years I realized in a moment of truth that nothing was burdening my shoulder and that
the column was my own creation-sham, unreal, the product of my imagination and my vanity. I had walked,
run, spoken, organized, worked, in the belief that I was supporting something– and in reality I had been
holding up absolutely nothing. The weight of the world was all on Christ Crucified.
I was nothing, absolutely nothing!
Carlo Carretto, Letters from the Desert
Prayer for Respect of Life
Today’s Gospel passage falls under the category that
has come to be known as the “hard sayings” of Jesus.
Hard to understand, hard to apply to life today. The
Apostles’ request, “increase our faith,” is in response
to a previous “hard saying” about how frequently we
are called upon to forgive others. Curiously, Jesus
seems rather unforgiving in responding to their
request, or in describing the manner in which they
are to serve others.
Jesus uses exaggerations to wake us up to how God
is present in our lives, and how we are urged to live
if God is with us. None of us is called upon to uproot
trees or cast mountains into the sea. The faith we
have is adequate for the task we are called upon to
do: spread the gospel by our witness. And living that
witness is done not for self-gratification or
recognition, but out of the joy of helping the world to
hear the Good News.
Heavenly Father,
the beauty and dignity of human life
was the crowning of your creation.
You further ennobled that life when your Son
became one with us in his incarnation.
Help us to realize the sacredness of human life and
to respect it from the moment of conception
until the last moment at death.
Give us courage to speak with truth and love and
with conviction in defense of life.
Help us to extend the gentle hand
of mercy and forgiveness
to those who do not reverence your gift of life.
To all, grant pardon
for the times we have failed to be grateful
for your precious gift of life or
to respect it in others.
We ask this in Jesus' Name.
Amen.

Pure Louisiana Hot Sauce
A Cajun priest recently arrived in his new parish in upstate New York.
He had always been very fond of pure Louisiana Hot Sauce
and always kept a bottle of it on his dining room table.
At his first dinner party he offered some to his guest,
who wanting to be friendly, took a big spoonful.
When the guest finally was able to speak again, he gasped,
“Why Father, I’ve heard of preaching hellfire,
but you are the first priest I’ve met
who passed out samples!”
