NEWSLETTER APRIL 2013 Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, AFLC 614 East 11th Street Dickinson, ND 58601 Web Site: www.aflcchurches.org/OSLC-Dickinson E-mail Address: oslc@ndsupernet.com Pastor’s Page - The Resurrection Body But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?” 36 How foolish! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. 37 When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else. 38 But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body. 39 Not all flesh is the same: People have one kind of flesh, animals have another, birds another and fish another. 40 There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another. 41 The sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor. 42 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; 43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; 44 it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. I Corinthians 15:35-44 35 As I checked out the backyard the other day, I found leaves poking out of the ground in a flower bed that was completely void of any living thing last fall. Whatever had been planted there had completely died off (above the soil anyway) and I had no idea that anything was growing there. Our new bodies are like these plants. The old has to completely die off before the new can come and grow. As much as death is an unwelcome part of human existence, it does serve the purpose of preparing our soul and spirit for the new body that Jesus will clothe us in. Even though our old body serves us well, it cannot come into the holy and perfect place that Jesus has prepared for us. When we are in our new bodies, complete in body, mind, and spirit; then we will truly be who we are (the real us). Free from the distortion that sin causes, we will see and experience ourselves and our Creator in ways unimaginable. I have read a number of writers who speculate as to what that life will be like, but it’s only guessing. But I know that it will be a wonderful thing and will be beyond anything that I can grasp at this time in my life. So, until then, I can live in the confidence that my future is securely in the hands of someone who has plans for me, good and perfect plans, that will be better than anything I might ask or think. Pastor Davidson Page 1 Our Savior’s Lutheran Church Council Minutes: March 5, 2013 _________________________________________________ Meeting was called to order by Chairman Rick Tabert at 7:00. Pastor Davidson opened with reading of scripture and prayer. Members Present: Pastor Brian Davidson, Rick Tabert, Roger Hirning, Duane Stockert, Terry Oestreich, Bruce Haider, Scott Petersen, Larry Johnson, Kyle Smith, Rex Herring, John Hanstad, and Anita Biel. Others Present: Sharon Gegelmann, Barbara Bentz Members Absent: Greg Timmerman, Todd Marschner, Victor Entzel, and Tracey Walth Secretary’s Report: Motion made by Bruce Haider to approve the minutes as read, seconded by Scott Petersen. Motion Carried. Treasures Report: Submitted by John Hanstad. Motion made by Larry Johnson to approve with a second by Bruce Haider. Motion Carried. Pastors Report: March 2013 1. Mr. Brent Raan, AFLTS seminarian, has asked to share the work of the AFLC in India here at Our Saviour’s on Sunday, April 28. He will be speaking at the district WMF rally in New Leipzig that weekend. He would be delivering the sermon and then would use the Sunday School time to answer questions and/or show a powerpoint about the work in India. 2. OSLC will be hosting the homeless shelter next week on Sunday night through Wednesday night, Mar 10-13. The shelter program may or may not end early on March 23 depending on need. 3. The community Good Friday service will be held at EBC at 3pm, we pastors haven’t met to plan that event yet. 4. We will have a Maundy Thursday service preceded by a potluck supper, served by the youth. 5. There are a number of times when it would be nice to print posters and flyers in color, in small amounts. Ink jet printers dry up between jobs and the ink gets expensive, not to mention that the prints run and streak when they get wet (not a good thing for posters). Taking jobs to the local printers is even more expensive. Color laser printers have come way down in price, and even though they aren’t anywhere as inexpensive as a black and white printer, they are more reasonable than the previous two alternatives and they don’t have to be used every day to keep them working right. I suggest that we pick up a small color laser printer for doing small jobs in color as needed. With toner, one can be purchased for less than $200. -continued on page 3 Page 2 continued from page – 2 6. I have replaced parts in both my main office computer and the backup I brought from home. Everything is working again and the new parts mean that I can show full motion video and/or play movies and DVD’s from either computer. 7. The next Church & Law seminar will be held at Stanley, ND on March 9 at 10am CT. 8. WND/EMT District Family Bible Camp will be held at Asbury Camp in Washburn, ND from July 28-August 1. We are still working on speakers and a theme. 9. The dedication service for New Hope Free Lutheran in Jamestown will be held at 3pm CT this Sunday and we have been invited as a church to take part in that service. I will be bringing a greeting on behalf of OSLC. 10. The family of Eileen Iverson asked that memorials be in the form of a donation to the AFLC Department of Evangelism. I would suggest a gift be given in her name to that department from our congregation. 11. Dickinson Youth for Christ is hosting a bowling party in New England for Jr. and High School youth on April 12th. They need some financial support to enable them to invite any youth that might be interested. Respectfully Submitted, Pastor Davidson Deacon's Report: The deacons have nothing new to report. Trustee’s Report: *The trustees are still planning to finish putting insulation in the storage building *John Hanstad reported the water bill had nearly doubled last month. Spoke to the City of Dickinson but have not come up with an explanation as to why. The meter was checked by the city. The currant bill shows things back to normal. . Youth Group Report submitted by Kyle Smith: 1. The youth helped in getting the meal ready for Ash Wednesday. 2. I had a meeting with Jordan and Matt via Google+ on the 5th; we decided to have a district youth retreat here at Our Saviour’s April 26th and 27th. 3. I have been calling around to get quotes for a bus to take to FLY and it looks like we might end up taking two buses instead of one. 4. Over Presidents' Day weekend I went to Bottineau to go skiing with a group of youth from Beulah and Stanley. We had one youth from Our Saviour's come with along with two other girls and Dale Daley. We ended up not going skiing though because of the bad weather. 5. We had a FLY fundraiser at Taco Johns on the 28th. The manager at Taco Johns said they should be getting back to me on how much we raised sometime this week. 6. Beginning after Easter youth group will be meeting on Wednesday pm in stead of on Sundays in the hope of getting more to come to youth group. Currently there are seven students in confirmation and only two come to youth group. - continued on page 4 Page 3 Continued from page 3 Old Business:* Rick asked how many e-mail addresses have been given to Pastor. Currently 14 e-mail addressed have been submitted. There is now a list of e-mail addresses of all board members on file which will make for better communication. *An update on the homeless shelter was provided by Pastor Davidson and John. All is going well. The city okayed three volunteers verses four per shift. The three hour shifts are working well. New Business: *Brent Raan, a seminary student from the AFLC will be sharing on his trip to India at the worship service on Sunday, April 28.After discussion, a motion was made by Larry Johnson to give Brent Raan $100 to cover traveling expenses with a second being given by Rex Herring. Motion carried *Evangelical Bible Church is providing a bus to take 30 kids from Youth for Christ to New England on Friday, April 12 for bowling. A motion was made by Bruce Haider and seconded by Terry Oestreich to provide $200 to help with expenses for this outing. The consensus was that by helping it would show support for the youth in our community. *Rick Tabert shared information regarding the Thrivent program , “Take Action” available for Thrivent members to be used to benefit our community in many different ways such as: small groups joining together to make flower gardens, helping with after prom parties, movie nights, homeless projects, etc. * Pastor Brian suggested in lieu of flowers for Eileen Iverson’s funeral that a memorial be given in her name to the AFLC Commission on Evangelism. Bruce Haider motioned to have envelopes provided in the Sunday worship service for anyone wishing to add to the $100 memorial that OSL would start. It was seconded by Terry Oestreich. Motion carried. *Pastor reminded the board of the New Hope Free Lutheran Church dedication of their new building in Jamestown on this Sunday, March 17. Those going down would be leaving right after the worship service. *Pastor suggested OSL could use a good color printer for doing small jobs at the office. After discussion, Rex Herring made a motion to purchase a laser color printer for around $200. The motion was seconded by Larry Johnson. Motion carried. *Barb reminded the council about preparing and serving Easter breakfast. *Sharon Gegelmann request the use of Our Saviour’s for an all boys piano recital by the Badlands Chapter of Music Teacher’s National Association on Sunday, April 14 at 7:00 pm. The pianos will be tuned by the chapter in exchange for the use of the church. Larry Johnson made a motion to accept the request. Seconded by John Hanstad. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 8:00 pm. Respectfully Submitted by Anita Biel, Council Secretary Page 4 FINANCIAL REPORT 2/01/2013 to 2/28/2013 DEPOSITS: 02/04 02/11 02/11 02/14 02/18 02/19 02/21 02/21 02/25 02/25 02/25 2,413.00 30.31 2,061,00 261.00 2,486.00 10,000.00 345.68 305.00 855.00 2,142.00 20.00 $20,918.99 CHS Dividend (Ash Wednesday) (Thrivent) (Thrivent Choice) (Lent) (Teen Challenge) (Teen Challenge) TOTAL EXPENSES PAID: 02/03 Dan’s Supermarket 162.77 02/04 City of Dickinson 48.30 02/04 Dan’s Supermarket 25.54 02/07 Dakota Dust-Tex 26.20 02/07 Consolidated 254.96 02/11 Total Safety 52.00 02/13 Clear Channel Broadcasting 320.00 02/13 AFLC 750.00 02/14 ABM 1,255.11 02/15 Pastor Davidson 1,875.00 02/15 Kyle Smith 600.00 02/15 Barbara Bentz 376.23 02/15 NDSL 35.00 02/15 MDU 140.16 02/20 New Hope Free Lutheran Church- 10,000.00 02/25 Teen Challenge 855.00 02/25 City of Dickinson 155.27 02/25 Gate City Bank 682.00 02/25 MDU 378.92 02/25 SBM 70.91 02/25 Teen Challenge 20.00 02/25 Pastor Davidson 424.00 02/25 George Kessel 72.47 02/25 Pastor Davidson 1,875.00 02/25 Kyle Smith 600.00 02/25 Barbara Bentz 411.23 02/25 George Kessel 321.70 $21,787.67 Balance on 1/31/13 Deposits Interest Expenses paid Balance on 02/28/13 Homeless Lunches Parsonage Water, Sewer Coffee Fellowship Entry Rugs Phone, Internet Inspection of Fire Exit Radio Broadcast Budget Copier Contract Pastor Youth Worker Secretary Secretary Parsonage Electricity, Gas Donation Donation Water, Garbage, Sewer Parsonage Gas, Electricity Paper Donation Health Insurance Janitor Supplies Pastor Youth Worker Secretary Janitor TOTAL $9,092.32 20,918.99 1.03 21,787.67 $8,224.67 John Hanstad, Treasurer Page 5 Gratitude: Good to the Last Drop 2013 WMF District Spring Rally April 27, 2013 ~ 9:00 AM Immanuel Lutheran Church New Lepzig, North Dakota Theme verse: “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” I Thessalonians 5: 16-18 Speakers: Brent Raan Marilyn Wagner If you are interested in attending, please sign the sheet provided for you in the Fellowship Hall so we can arrange for transportation.
