July 2016 Education and License Renewal Made Easy A Letter From Your KCRAR President KCRAR offers a wide variety of continuing education classes, which are complimentary as a member benefit. While many educational opportunities at KCRAR are designed to meet license renewal requirements, other nonCE classes are also available to members as a way to keep members upto-date on current industry issues/news, skills and tools important to their livelihood. By Christian Zarif, 2016 KCRAR President Kipp Cooper CEO, Publisher Kyla Barcus Director of Communications Micah Gutweiler Communications Manager Graphic Designer Scott Arnold Foley Publications Inc. Contributing Writers The no-cost CE class option is a tremendous value to our members, and one that is continually championed by our Board of Directors. As the methods for learning have evolved, KCRAR has kept the pace along with them by offering complimentary access to online classes that members can take from the comfort of their home or office. And it’s not just KCRAR that offers educational opportunities; whether it is a local, state or national class, you can always be certain that you’ll come away with something new that will help you and your business. As a KCRAR member, you have access to these educational opportunities year-round, but that’s not all. You also have the vast wealth of information from NAR at your fingertips, up to and including certification trainings and the option to obtain your Masters of Real Estate Degree. And, while these options may not be free, the time and effort you invest in these opportunities will come back to you many-fold. We all know that continuing education is required for you to keep doing business. Both Kansas and Missouri require 12 hours of CE every two years, which includes one mandatory/core class and three elective classes. These are more than just stodgy requirements that one must mechanically meet. Each one of these classes is a pathway to self-improvement and professional development that will help you stand out. After all, If, say, only one REALTOR® in ten knows how to effectively deal in historical properties, or is an expert on processing cash flow analysis data for rental properties, wouldn’t you want to be that one? If you’d like more information about the classes being offered by KCRAR, then please visit www.kcrar.com/education-calendar for the dates and times of specific classes. You’ll find rosters and contact information for both the KCRAR Board of Directors and the KCRAR Staff online at www.kcrar.com under the “About KCRAR” tab. We’re here to serve you! In January 2001, the Metropolitan Kansas City Board of REALTORS® in Missouri and the Johnson County Board of REALTORS® in Kansas merged to become the Kansas City Regional Association of REALTORS®. Today, the Association is one of the largest and most respected real estate trade organizations in the country. It is the mission of the Kansas City Regional Association of REALTORS® to be the advocate for REALTOR® members; to advance the professionalism, integrity and competency of members, and to promote private property rights. Continuing education doesn’t just benefit the individual REALTOR®, however. When real estate associations encourage their members to engage in continuing education (beyond that which is required, that is to say), the brokers and the public at large all benefit from a well-trained and well-educated collection of real estate professionals. Here at KCRAR and Heartland MLS, the best way for us to encourage our members and subscribers to continue their education is to offer it at no charge. By Janice Lindberg 2016 Heartland MLS Board President It’s been proven that individual involvement through education can lead to greater engagement and can encourage individuals to take on leadership roles within their workforce. With regard to REALTORS®, this can lead to self-actualization and possibly advance their careers, either within their brokerages, within the association, or just simply as an individual real estate professional. KCRAR and Heartland MLS are proud to continue to offer no-cost CE courses for members and subscribers, either to expand understanding on new developments in the real estate sphere, or as in-depth trainings for systems crucial to your day-to-day business. If you haven’t been taking advantage of these free educational opportunities, then take a moment to stop by KCRAR.com and view the events calendar for the full list of KCRAR and Heartland classes that are available! JULY 2016 | 3 What you should know about KCRAR Classes and License Renewal Requirements KCRAR is committed to helping members in the goal of obtaining a successful career by building a strong foundation through education and high ethical standards. Whether you’re a new member, or a seasoned pro, KCRAR’s goal is to give you every opportunity to stay on top of your license requirements, and keep you informed on just about everything you’d need to stay educated on what’s important in real estate. After all, a REALTOR® who is better educated is one who can better meet the needs of their clients and forge better success. But staying on top of your licensing requirements can sometimes be a little nebulous, especially when you have two different states to wrangle. What follows are some of the more frequent questions we get regarding KCRAR and Heartland MLS classes, license renewal requirements, and what to expect when faced with the lineup of classes available. What Are my Requirements? It’s pretty straightforward: both Kansas and Missouri require 12 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years. Both states require one mandatory/core class and three elective classes. Each class is three hours long. That’s it! A good place to start is at KCRAR.com. You can check out our lineup of classes offered, which is updated monthly. From there, it’s a simple matter of logging in and registering for a class, which we’ll cover later. 4 CONNECT | JULY 2016 When do I renew? Missouri REALTORS® If you’re licensed in Missouri, then you’re up for renewal this year. All Missouri REALTORS®, regardless of license issue date, renew in even-numbered years, which 2016 happens to be one of. Licensees must have 12 hours of CE completed after 10/1/2016 in order to renew. For the next renewal in 2018, your required CE credit hours must be dated after 10/1/2016. Missouri REALTORS® renew in September of this year. Missouri brokers operate on a more expedited schedule, as their CE hours must be dated after 7/1/2014 for this year’s renewal, with June 2016 having served as their renewal deadline. However, both brokers and REALTORS® need to have completed the required three-hour Missouri required course “Missouri Core Curriculum: Agency and Brokerage Relationships.” This is a class offered for free right here at KCRAR (though, we just call it the “Core Class”). Kansas REALTORS® If you’re licensed in Kansas, the rules are more involved, but, with a little explanation, are really simple to understand. Like Missouri, it’s also a two-year renewal schedule, but the renewal time depends on your last initial. To find out when yours is, take a peek at the chart to the right. CE requirements are similar to those for Missouri. All Kansas REALTORS® and brokers are required to take the “Core Class,” which is still free at KCRAR for our Kansas members. After that, REALTORS® would need nine additional hours of elective classes. First Letter of Renewal/Education Last Name Due Date N–O–P 01/31/EVEN Q–R 03/31/EVEN S 05/31/EVEN T–U–V 07/31/EVEN W–X–Y–Z–A 09/30/EVEN B 11/30/EVEN C 01/31/ODD D–E 03/31/ODD F–G 05/31/ODD H 07/31/ODD I–J–K–L 09/30/ODD M 11/30/ODD License Expiration Date 02/28/EVEN 04/30/EVEN 06/30/EVEN 08/31/EVEN 10/31/EVEN 12/31/EVEN 02/28/ODD 04/30/ODD 06/30/ODD 08/31/ODD 10/31/ODD 12/31/ODD For brokers, the Core Class is still a requirement, but they must also take the “Kansas Broker Required” class, offered here at KCRAR, again, at no cost. However, instead of nine additional hours of electives, brokers only require six hours. CE course completion and license renewal are all due by the last day of the month immediately preceding the license expiration date. if your license expires in September of 2016, you must renew your license no later than August 31st, 2016. If you renew during your expiration month, you’ll be assessed a $50 fee by the real estate commission. JULY 2016 | CONNECT 5 How do I register for a class? Easy. Just head over to KCRAR.com and log in to your account. There, under “Education and Event Registration” you can register for a KCRAR live class, an HMLS Matrix Training class (more on those later), or select from a wide range of online classes. Do I need to take an ethics class? KCRAR CE and non-CE classes are held at our main offices at 11150 Overbrook Road, Suite 100, nestled right in Leawood, KS. Our classroom is a dedicated learning space that’s outfitted with plenty of seats, sound system, coffee, vending and, most importantly, access to KCRAR staff. KCRAR offers a regular class that covers, in great detail, the REALTOR® Code of Ethics. While this class isn’t required for your license renewal, you do need to complete this class in order to remain a member of the Association. Since your license is governed by the real estate commission, they don’t have a say in your ethics training. NAR, on the other hand, is the entity that oversees this requirement. A four-year period during which members were required to complete their Code of Ethics training ended on December 31, 2012. The current 4-year period, 2013 - 2016, will end on December 31, 2016. That means, if you haven’t taken your training for this cycle, you’re facing a deadline at the end of the year! Be sure to check your records and see if you still need to complete this valuable course. You Mentioned Online Classes. Do I get access to those? Do the classes count for both states? Absolutely. KCRAR has partnered with CECheap.com, a product of Career Education Systems and a leader in offering online CE to REALTORS®. Normally, online CE would carry a cost. Fortunately for you, KCRAR is continuing to offer its members no-cost online CE through the rest of 2016, making this convenience much more accessible. In short: yes they do! KCRAR’s CE classes have been certified to meet requirements for both Kansas and Missouri, so you’ll receive CE credit for each appropriate state, provided you’ve given KCRAR your license numbers. Both Real Estate Commissions post on their websites the classes you’ve attended, too. Just give them about five business days for these classes to appear. For a calendar listing of everything available, take a look at the calendar widget on KCRAR’s home page. Clicking on “View Full Calendar” will bring you to our monthly view of everything that’s happening with KCRAR and Heartland MLS’s, classes and events. Just be advised that both these options are updated monthly, and are subject to change. All the online CE classes offered through this avenue count for toward both Missouri and Kansas CE credit, and includes the Core Classes alongside a variety of engaging elective courses. Best of all, you can print your own certificates once you’re done, and the appropriate Real Estate Commissions will be notified of your course completion automatically. Please note that this can sometimes take up to five business days. If you complete an online CE course, you may not see it listed in your records at KCRAR.com. This does not mean you didn’t get credit… KCRAR’s records simply keep track of classes you’ve taken in person here in our offices. We will cover more on the next page. 6 CONNECT | JULY 2016 How do I Find if I have been given credit for a class? How can I ensure that I receive course credit? If you have access to the Internet, you can check your current standings. Keeping your license up to date is extremely important, and KCRAR is committed to keeping accurate records of your class attendance. We’ll be sure to record each class you take here at our offices, but we also need you to ensure your information is as up-to-date as possible. This includes your license number(s), as well as your home address, contact information and more. Each and every CE class you complete, regardless of the class or where you took it, is updated on the website for each state’s Real Estate Commission. This is a tremendous convenience, especially since KCRAR’s records will only display the classes you’ve taken at our offices—online classes may not show up. Due to this, it’s always best to check your state Real Estate Commission’s website for the most up-to-date information. Despite this, however, it’s always a good idea to hang on to your completion certificates. Want to know where to go to check this information? For Kansas, visit www.krec.ks.gov, and sign in with your license number and last four digits of your SSN. For Missouri, visit www.pr.mo.gov/realestate.asp. From there, click on MREC Licensee Search to find yourself. Their home page shows a whole section on instructions on how to look up your records, and some troubleshooting tips in case you can’t find what you’re looking for. Who can I speak with regarding questions about registering for a KCRAR class? You can contact KCRAR’s Education Registrar Sherry Young any time during normal business hours at 913266-5930, or at SherryY@kcrar.com. The good news is that you can update your information online. Just log in to your account at KCRAR.com and click on “Personal Information” under the Membership Record heading. Bear in mind that if you have two licenses, we need both of those numbers in order to give credit and report to the appropriate Real Estate Commissions. Have you heard about our Heartland MLS Classes? Chances are you’ve already taken the Matrix Orientation course that Heartland MLS provides, but did you know that there are so many more classes that they offer? If you’re not satisfied with just the basics for using Matrix, then check out the Advanced Matrix and the Hands-On Matrix courses. Get to know RPR a little more in the Basic RPR course. Learn some new tricks to get a leg up in your business with the Technology Basics course. You can benefit from these courses and more for absolutely free. Just log in to your account at KCRAR.com and click the “HMLS Matrix Training Registration” link under the Education and Event Registration heading. You can find a list of available classes on our online calendar, or on the back cover of this issue. JULY 2016 | CONNECT 7 New Offsite CE Opportunities! On Wednesday, September 21st, KCRAR is partnering with Habitat for Humanity KC to “Rock the Block”. This one day event will be the largest of its kind in Kansas City and will provide our REALTOR® members from across the metro the opportunity to make significant contributions of time, money, and talent to benefit Habitat for Humanity KC and revitalize our city one neighborhood at a time. To make this goal a reality, we need your help! Habitat for Humanity KC “Rock the Block” program provides families in need of home repair such as exterior painting, accessibility assistance, landscaping or other minor exterior repairs. “Rock the Block” helps homeowners impacted by age, disability and family issues that may keep them from being able to properly maintain or repair their homes. Homeowners are interviewed and chosen based on income, need and willingness to participate. Each home will need about 30 team members to assist that day. All members of KCRAR are welcome to participate, and smaller offices or individuals can certainly combine with others to adopt a home. But the day won’t be all work and no play. The event will also feature great food, music, games and contests, and lots of media coverage and recognition for your team! This is a great opportunity for us as REALTORS® to help protect the American Dream of Homeownership. Please consider adopting a home and help us “Rock the Block” on September 21st. This deceptive little number will charm passersby with its besparkled, heart-shaped cuteness, but, make no mistake—this decoration is no pushover. If you’re in a jam, just push the red panic button on the side and unleash the full fury of a 120-decibel siren that will alarm and disorient anyone foolhardy enough to come incorrect. This handy charm comes in black, gold or pink, and looks great either on keychains, backpacks or triumphant selfies taken as would-be perpetrators flee back into the inky shadows of the night. BlingSting Pepper Spray $22.00 All that glitters is not gold. We all know the saying, but never has it been more true than in describing this perfectly adorable personal protection unit. Indeed, this keychain may glitter like diamonds dipped in liquid sunlight, but instead of gold, it contains pure, condensed anger. The pepper spray within measures up to 2 million Scoville Heat Units, making it powerful enough to instantly incapacitate assailants who maybe needed to think twice. Rest assured, the glitter of the rhinestones may very well be the last thing any attacker sees. REALTOR® Logo Branded Purse Charm $10.99 A sizeable lobster-clawed clip-on decoration proudly displaying the REALTOR® logo, this gorgeous gold-tone accessory doesn’t add much by way of direct personnel repellant to your ensemble, but it will add considerable class and distinction to any purse, keychain or laptop bag you may carry with you. the possibilities for home ownership.
