Echte loods brengt eerste kratje loodsbier
verwerkt.

Canadian destroyer rescues 3 sailors in
storm; heads for another rescue
A Canadian destroyer was steaming at full speed Thursday evening to help rescue a Nova Scotian family and one crew
member whose yacht was adrift in rough seas hundreds of kilometres north of Bermuda.
The HMCS Athabaskan set off to assist the four aboard, just a few hours after successfully rescuing three sailors
from another yacht after it was tossed by heavy winds and high seas off the U.S. coast.
The warship's destination for Thursday was the disabled yacht Rochelle 4, with a Yarmouth, N.S., couple, Brian and
Sheila Lewis, their daughter Katrina Lewis, and a family friend Dr. David Syer on board.
The boat was tossing in rough seas about 500 kilometres north of Bermuda. Brian Neilan, an employee of the U.S.
coast guard at it Portsmouth, Va., headquarters, said late Thursday that Katrina Lewis had been taken off Rochelle IV
by a motor launch from a Bahamian merchant ship.
The three others were still on board the yacht, which was sheltering behind the large merchant vessel, awaiting the
arrival of the Canadian destroyer at sunrise. The Rochelle had been taking on water due to the heavy six-metre seas
and 80 kilometre per hour winds. However, weather forecasts were calling for the seas to calm overnight.
"They're hunkering down for the evening. They're safe for now. It would be more difficult to retrieve them with a large
motor tanker. They did it with one person, but it was too dangerous," explained Neilan. "The safest bet is to wait for
the Canadian warship to arrive. It looks like it will be around sunrise."
In the earlier rescue, Capt. Harry Harsch of the Athabaskan said he used a Zodiac from his ship to ferry the
passengers from the boat as it bobbed in five-metre swells about 360 kilometres southeast of Yarmouth, N.S.
"It was a bit tense for a while," Harsch said in an interview from the destroyer moments after the rescue. "Any time
you rescue someone at sea, it's a dramatic thing, but in this case nobody was dying and there wasn't an urgency to
get them off."
The two men and one woman on the sailboat, a 11-metre yacht called La Pierva and registered in Quebec, were said
to be cold and wet, but unhurt. Harsch said they were all in survival suits as they were transitted from their boat to
Athabaskan, where they were hoisted aboard with special collars.
"They're very happy to be off their sailboat," he said. "They were cold and wet and looking forward to a hot shower."
He said they were surprised to see a Canadian vessel coming to their aid after spending a frightening night bobbing on
the sea without power.
The vessel ran into trouble days ago after a lightning strike knocked out their global positioning system and led to an
engineering problem, leaving them helpless when the weather deteriorated. The crew also lost its main sail.
Inspectie V&W onderzoekt waterbussen

stuurinrichting was uitgevallen.
North Korean ship released in Mumbai
A North Korean ship, Omrani II, detained here by authorities since October 29, was released on Friday by the Marine
Mercantile Department.
"We issued the release letter yesterday," an official of the department said. The ship, which was on its way to Iran,
suffered engine problems and was brought to the Mumbai harbour on October 29.
A Director General of Shipping official said deficiencies that made the vessel unfit for making a voyage were detected
during a routine inspection made in keeping with international maritime obligations.
"We undertake inspection of foreign flag vessels to ascertain their technical fitness with respect to safety, security and
manning issues," he said.
Once these deficiencies were rectified, the release letter was issued, he said.
Varend Erfgoed krijgt erkenning met
eigen Restauratiefonds

Jessurun constateede in
mensen beter in staat
gesteld worden om op
professionele wijze de
restauratie ter hand te
nemen. Daarvoor is veel
geld nodig. De nieuwe
Varend Monument-Lening
is een flinke stap in de
richting van het duurzaam
behoud van deze oude
schepen. Het Nationaal
Restauratiefonds en het
VSBfonds hebben een half
miljoen Euro als
startkapitaal in het project
gestoken.
Jessurun hoopt dat een
staatssecretaris of
minister de Beurs
Klassieke Schepen komt
bezoeken om te “beseffen
dat je wel op vrijwilligers
mag steunen, maar niet
op hen mag leunen.” Hij
acht overheidssteun
noodzakelijk om de
varende monumenten
voor de toekomst te
behouden.
Foto : Piet Sinke ©
Dat is overigens niet af te
lezen aan de Beurs
Klassieke schepen. Hier
werd het 2500ste officiële
varend erfgoed certificaat
uitgereikt aan voormalige
veerboot, de vijftigjarige
MS. Friesland.

INVESTIGATION OF SHIPWRECK TAKES TIME
SSG-GOTEBORG. The accident investigation board, which is investigating why the Swedish-flagged ro-ro carrier
Finnbirch sank in the Baltic Sea east of Karehamn on the island of Oland, completed the remaining interviews with
the crew last weekend. The shipwreck resulted in the loss of two lives.
According to the international ship registry Equasis, the Finnbirch was criticised on five counts when she was last
inspected on 21 September. However, the defects were not significant enough for the vessel to be judged
unseaworthy. The investigators do not believe that the defects caused the accident. Another explanation put forward is
that the container vessel began to list in the heavy wind because of poorly secured cargo, but the chairman of the
board, Goran Rosvall, is cautious:
"We don´t know the cause and are carrying out an investigation without any preconceptions. The fact that the cargo
began moving around is not good at all, but we don´t know if this caused the list and the ship to capsize or whether it
was a result of the list", he told the Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet.
Over the weekend, two environmental aircraft, one German and one Finnish, helped the Swedish Coast Guard to
locate an oil slick from the Finnbirch, which had been detected on Saturday and was estimated to be 22
kilometres long and 7 kilometres wide. On Sunday, the oil began to dissipate and the slick diminished in size. There
was no heavy fuel oil in the slick, which instead consisted of a lighter lube oil leaking from day tanks, oil drums and
vehicles on board. The coast guard service says that the remaining oil will dissipate in the water and will not reach the
coast of Oland.

Jordanian cargo ship catches fire in the
Red Sea, 1 dead
A fire on a Jordanian cargo ship killed one crew member and injured three others in the Red Sea on Friday, an
Egyptian naval officer said.
The engine of the "Petra Express" overheated and caught fire as the ship was crossing the Red Sea between the
Jordanian port of Aqaba and the Egyptian port of Nuweiba, said Brig. Mohammed Sayed.
Sayed said a sailor was asphyxiated by smoke. Jordan's official news agency Petra reported that it was the ship's
captain, Munir Marzouk, a Jordanian, who was killed. It identified the three injured crew as Mohammed Taha Al-Haifi,
Hamad Ayyash Saber, and Hani Mohammed Yousef.
To restore foreign aid, Hamas leader says he would resign But Petra said the ship was sailing from the Saudi port of
Jiddah to Aqaba.
The fire broke out in the early hours of the morning as the ship was some 6.8 nautical miles from Egypt's coast. It was
put out an hour later by an Egyptian firefighting boat.
Sayed said the ship was being towed to an Egyptian port. The Egyptian authorities have stepped up their maritime
safety measures after an Egyptian ferry caught fire in the Red Sea in February, killing more than 1,000 passengers.

Drijvende kraan "Grote Gust" gekanteld
in Antwerpse haven
Kattendijkdok in Antwerpen.

Chance to step aboard Royal Navy frigate
HMS Montrose sailed up the Tay to Dundee yesterday for a four-day visit which will give people the chance to see
inside a Royal Navy warship that has been part of Britain’s commitment to the war on terror.
The Type-23 Duke Class frigate, carrying a Lynx helicopter and Sting Ray torpedo, is visiting the area of its name, but
has berthed at Dundee because of structural problems with the jetty in the Angus town.
The visit will allow the crew to form and renew relationships with affiliated schools and charities; participate in
Remembrance ceremonies, and host visits over the weekend.
Commander Tom Watt and some of his crew will call on, among others, Dundee sea cadets at their base Training Ship
Duncan, the local Riding for the Disabled Association, Queen Victoria School in Dunblane, Rosemont Primary School,
and the Royal British Legion in Montrose. Visits will be reciprocated with the pupils from the schools, sea cadets and
Riding for the Disabled going onboard for a tour of one of the navy’s finest warships.
Tomorrow teams from the ship will take on former pupils from Morgan Academy at football and rugby and play in a
hockey match against Dundee Wanderers. The following day the ship’s company will take part in Remembrance
services and wreath-laying in Montrose, Dundee and Forfar before opening the ship to visitors in the afternoon.
From 1pm to 3pm members of the public are invited to walk around the upper deck of the ship, view the displays in
the ship’s hangar and take a look inside her embarked Lynx helicopter. Commander Watt said, “Although the ship
visited last year, this will be the first visit for a significant number of my ship’s company, including myself.

“We are very much looking forward to welcoming people on board on Sunday afternoon and taking the opportunity to
visit our many affiliations. We are also very proud to have been invited to take part in a number of Remembrance
ceremonies in the local area.” This visit to Dundee comes towards the end of a busy 18 months for HMS Montrose,
a significant amount of which was spent in the Gulf protecting Iraqi oil platforms. After Montrose’s affiliated visit in
June last year the ship participated in an exercise with the Russian Navy, followed by attendance at Trafalgar 200
celebrations in Portsmouth.
A period of training ensured the ship and her company were ready for their six-month deployment to the Gulf.
Commander Watt said, “The relevance of what HMS Montrose did in the Gulf should not be underestimated. Oil is
Iraq’s life-blood, and by helping to ensure the steady flow of income into Iraq, the Royal Navy is contributing directly
to the country’s future stability and democracy. “The ship’s job in this region was vital in contributing to the coalition
efforts in assisting to restore stability and economic growth to Iraq.” A period of well-earned rest followed her return
from the Gulf, and then it was back to work and a busy programme of maintenance and on-ship training ensued in
preparation for an eight-week period of intensive training in her base port of Plymouth.
After HMS Montrose’s visit to Dundee she heads back to Plymouth for a maintenance period and starts a seven-month
deployment to the Mediterranean as part of a NATO task force.
COMBAT BOAT SALVAGED
SSG-GOTEBORG. The Swedish Navy´s combat boat 848, which sank east of Uto in the Stockholm Archipelago on 24
October, was salvaged last Saturday. During the afternoon, the navy´s submarine rescue vessel succeeded in raising
the combat boat from a depth of 40 metres. The Swedish National Board of Accident Investigation is now hoping to
find the reason for why the
boat, with 17 persons on
board, sank during
manoeuvres.
All those on board were
rescued. During the first
inspection, it was found that
the embarkation hatch was
missing, but the investigation
board cannot at present
determine whether this caused
the boat to sink. After the
accident, all 147 units of the
navy´s Stridsbat 90, of
which combat boat 848 was
one, were banned from use.
This ban is still in force

India to get hi-tech ship building yards
With India becoming a leading maritime power, the government has embarked upon an ambitious plan to set up two
state-of-the-art ship building yards in the country at a cost of Rs 5,000 crore each.
These would be greenfield ship building yards with one each in the east and the west coast. The yards would have the
capacity to build large container ships and tankers up to a capacity of three lakh tonne, shipping minister T R Baalu
said on Friday.
Chennai-based Ennore Port Ltd has been made the nodal agency for appointing consultants and identifying investors
for the ship building yards at the east coast. Similarly, Mumbai Port Trust has been appointed as nodal agency for the
ship yard in west coast, he said. The shipping minister had visited South Korea to learn about some of the large ship
building yards in that country, including one of the world’s largest Hyundai shipyard.
India already has four major ship building yards at Mazagon in Mumbai, Kochi in Kerala, Hindustan Shipyard at
Visakhapatnam and Hooghly Dock at Kolkata. There are 28 shipyards in the country, seven under Central public sector,
two under state government and nine under private sector. The two new shipyards will require 1,000 acres of land
each, and the location will be determined on the basis of availability of land.

10 shipping lines likely under Pakistan flag
Ten new shipping companies are expected to be registered over the next few months that would generate job
opportunities for several hundred people.
The ministry of ports and shipping expects heightened activity in the sector in the days ahead with a lot more scope
for the seafarers and the people engaged in related allied services. Currently, only one privately owned vessel-M.V.
Mega-I-is operating under Pakistani flag. The shipping circles, however, are of the firm opinion that more investment
in the shipping business will be made after formal signing of the amendments in the Pakistan India Shipping Protocol
1975.
The amended shipping protocol is expected to be signed in a month's time, which will allow the vessels of both India
and Pakistan to load third country cargo from each others ports. As a result of this the shipping operations will become
more flexible and liberal.
According to official sources the owners of Mega-I had assured the director general ports and shipping of adding
three more vessels to its fleet by the end of this year whereas M/s Nissam Shipping has assured the prime minister
and the DG ports and shipping to bring their vessels, which are presently registered abroad, for registration under
Pakistan flag before the end of this year.
Besides, the ministry of ports and shipping has successfully persuaded a private entrepreneur to operate a ferry
service between Karachi and Dubai, which was inaugurated by President Gen Pervez Musharraf.
The ferry service would not only encourage tourism but would also open up new employment opportunities for
Pakistani seafarers. In its very first voyage about 50 Pakistani seamen have been employed on the ferry service
vessel. Efforts are being made to further increase the number of jobs in the shipping sector and it is encouraging to
note that the owner of the vessel has expressed his resolve for hiring more Pakistani crew.

Moreover, with the active support of the private shipping companies the directorate general has been encouraging
foreign shipping lines like NYK and Maersk to hire Pakistani crew onboard as the national carrier of Bangladesh is
reportedly employing Pakistani seafarers. This would help improve the level of remittances to the the country.
Shipping circles believe that the current informal trade between India and Pakistan, which reportedly stands at $2
billion per annum, has been routing through Colombo, Salalah and Dubai ports and is adding up to the freight costs
due to the double handling. After the shipping protocol becomes effective it would induce business community to
invest in ship—owning industry under Pakistan Flag.
New Port in Bahrain Construction Delay
The new Khalifa bin Salman port under construction at Bahrain will not be ready until the second part of 2008, instead

Seattle loses biggest shipper
While the Port of Portland enjoys a banner year, the Port of Seattle has lost its biggest customer.
Today's Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that a softening market for container shipping in the Pacific Northwest and a
contentious union climate could have contributed to the loss of Mediterranean Shipping Co. S.A.

Mediterranean is the world's second-largest operator of container ships. Officials had hoped it would bring 220,000
TEUs, or 20-foot cargo units, through the port annually when it announced it had landed the company six months ago.
Mediterranean had not begun calling the port.
The private Swiss company operates nearly 300 ships worldwide. Container cargo volume in Seattle is down 5 percent
the first three quarters of this year when compared to last year. The Port of Portland, on the other hand, is having a
"steady increase in [cargo container] volumes and is "trending very positive" for the year, according to spokesman Eric
Hedaa.
Volumes are up 31 percent for the year, thanks to the addition of two shippers -- Taiwan-based Yang Ming Marine and
Israel-based ZIM Integrated Shipping Services Ltd.g -- earlier this year. The port moved 23,500 TEUs in September, inline with the levels it had in some of its best years.
Yang Ming and ZIM replaced "K" Line and Hyundai shipping, which both stopped calling Portland in 2004.

Mining to offset drought for Adsteam
Tug boat operator Adsteam Marine Ltd says the current drought will have a negative impact on its business as grain
shipments out of Australian ports decline. But Adsteam, which is awaiting UK regulatory approval for a $700 million
friendly takeover by Danish shipping giant SvitzerWijsmuller, expects a booming resource sector to offset the drought's
drain on revenue.
The operator of over 150 tug boats is active in 36 ports in Australia, so it gets a balanced exposure to different
sectors, chief executive officer John Moller told journalists after the group's annual general meeting in Sydney on
Tuesday.
"So we're highly exposed to grain but we're highly exposed to coal and other resources," he said. "There's no doubt
the drought is impacting or will have a significant impact on grain this year but also mining and resources volumes
continue to be strong, so the two of them in our business will sort of matt each other out."
Adsteam on Tuesday
declined to provide
financial guidance for
fiscal 2007. But
chairman Bruce
Corlett told
shareholders that
group earnings in the
first quarter were
slightly ahead of last
year.
Left:
Adsteam’s BULLARA
Is based in New
South Wales.
"This is before the
costs associated with
the SvitzerWijsmuller
offer and one-off costs associated with our workplace reform activities in the UK during the period," Mr Corlett added.
Last year, Adsteam's earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation, before one-off items, were $96.5
million and group net profit improved 15 per cent to $43 million.
Adsteam cut costs last year in the UK, where it earns about a third of its revenue, by reducing the number of operators
per tug from four to three. Further labour reforms will take place over the next 12 months. Since 2004, Adsteam has
bought nine new, more fuel efficient tugs that can handle bigger ships and will receive four new tugs this financial year
and another two in 2008.
Adsteam has already paid for a large proportion of the new tugs upfront through a staggered payment system. As for
the takeover offer, Mr Moller and Mr Corlett will appear on Thursday before the UK Competition Commission, which

must decide on the matter by February 14. "We're not in a position to know what the thinking of the commission is
really until they publish their provisional findings in early December," Mr Moller said.
SvitzerWijsmuller, a subsidiary of the world's largest shipping company AP Moller-Maersk A/S, launched its $2.54 per
share offer in July valuing Adsteam at $693 million. The Adsteam board has recommend shareholders accept the
offer, in the absence of a higher bid. Shares in the company closed steady at $2.34.
