St. Irenaeus Parish, Park Forest, Illinois February 21, 2016 Second Sunday of Lent St. Irenaeus Lenten Schedule 2016 Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy "You cannot conceive of a true Christian who is not merciful, just as you cannot conceive of God without his mercy. Mercy is the key word of the Gospel…We should not be afraid: We should allow ourselves to be embraced by the mercy of God, who waits for us and forgives everything.” Opening the Holy Door, Pope Francis, Dec. 8, 2015 Our Lenten and Holy Week Liturgical Schedule: Sunday February 21 Sunday March 13 Palm Sunday March 20 Holy Thursday March 24 Good Friday March 25 Holy Saturday March 26 Easter Sunday March 27 Stations of the Cross Eucharistic Adoration/Benediction 11:30 AM - 4:00 PM Parish Reconciliation Service 2:00 PM 5:00 PM 8:30 AM 10:30 AM 7:30 PM Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper 12:00 Noon Stations of the Cross 3:00 PM Commemoration of the Lord's Passion 10:00 AM Easter Basket Blessing; 7:30 PM Easter Vigil 8:30 AM 10:30 AM Friday evening during Lent 7:00PM In Church Stations of the Cross will be prayed each Friday evening during Lent at 7:00 PM. Whether our home is grand or humble, it is a gift from God. Abraham prepared a great sacrifice to the Lord in gratitude for the home God gave him. How do we show our gratitude to God for the home He has given us? Do we make a sacrifice of any kind? Do we return any of our finances to God, investing equally in our eternal home just as we invest in our earthly home? Eucharistic Adoration With each liturgical season Eucharistic Adoration is celebrated and prayed here at St Irenaeus. For this Lenten Season Eucharistic Adoration will be celebrated on Sunday, February 21. It begins after the 10:30 mass and concludes with Benediction at 4:00 PM. Our faith tradition asks that someone be present in church during the hours of Eucharistic Adoration, sign-up sheets will be available in the back of church beginning on Ash Wednesday. The mass is the primary way we join ourselves to Christ and the community through our weekly celebration of the Eucharist. We gather together to praise God our Father as we come forward as a community to receive the Body and Blood of Jesus. And from time-to-time we gather for Eucharistic Adoration to take a pause from our busy lives to marvel at the great mystery of love celebrated in the Eucharist and to thank God for it. Please consider joining the parish community for Eucharistic Adoration during this Jubilee Year of Mercy. As part of the parish celebration of the Jubilee Year of Mercy the parish will offer the opportunity to attend mass at 7:00 pm on Wednesday evenings during Lent. The homily/reflection will be around the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. There will be a different speaker each Wednesday who will reflect on one of the Works of Mercy. During Lent the 8:00 AM mass will be moved to the 7:00 PM mass time, there will be no mass or communion service at 8:00 AM on Wednesday mornings beginning on February 17 and continuing through March 16. Please consider joining us for this liturgy as we celebrate God’s Mercy in our own lives and in our world! Portiuncula Center for Prayer 9263 W St. Francis Road Frankfort, IL 60423 Register by calling 815.464.3880, emailing info@portforprayer.org, or on our website at www.portforprayer.org OF YOU MY HEART HAS SPOKEN: SEEK GOD’S FACE PSALM 27:8 Date: Saturday, February 27 Time: 9:00-2:00 Fee: $40 (Includes lunch) Developing an attitude of mercy is a special way of looking at the world, an attitude that helps us to "seek God's face" in all of creation, and especially in others and in painful situations. During this Lenten season when we seek conversion of heart, come join us for prayer, presentations, quiet reflection, and group interaction. Allow Gospel persons such as the two thieves crucified with Jesus to illustrate how attitudes of humility, vulnerability, mercy and trust can deepen our relationships with the Divine and with others. Facilitator: Holly Marie Schultz, OSF has a B. A. in English, has given a variety of presentations, and “seeks God’s face” in poetry, nature, art, and the people and situations of daily life. As a member of the Heading Avenue Franciscans of West Peoria, IL, who are “called to make God’s compassionate presence known”, Sister enjoys sharing her faith journey and experiences of God’s merciful love with others. St. Irenaeus Book Club, hosted by St. Irenaeus Young Adults The Red Tent by Anita Diamant A fictional look at the events of Genesis through the eyes and voice of Dinah, daughter of Jacob and Leah. Known only as the minor character in her own Scripture story, Dinah opens our understanding of women's roles in the Bible and the traditions, both the lasting and the lost, that shaped history and faith. Moving and resonant, it's a story you'll never forget. Thursday, March 10th @ 7:30 pm, Rm 8 Please sign up in the back of the church.
