KNOWING AMORIS LAETITIA (PART III)
Dear St. Peter Claver Parishioners,
Chapter 4 “Love in Marriage” of Amoris Laetitia is a masterpiece. It should
be read by every couple planning to marry and every couple who has been
married for no matter how many years.
It begins with a wonderful meditation on St. Paul’s lyrical passage on love
in First Corinthians (13:4-7). He sees Paul’s hymn as a preparation to
discuss conjugal love. “After the love that unites us to God, conjugal love is
the ‘greatest form of friendship,’” he says, quoting St. Thomas Aquinas.
The tone is pastoral and inspiration, not nagging or judgmental. One can
only conclude that, as a priest and bishop, he spent countless hours
listening and dialoguing with couples about their lived experience.
– Fr. Adrian
4: LOVE IN MARRIAGE
102: “It is more proper to charity to desire to love than to
desire to be loved” (quoting Thomas Aquinas, Summa
Theologiae, II-II, q. 27, art. 1, ad 2)
always on the path of friendship, which inspires married
couples to care for one another.”
105: “Once we allow ill will to take root in our hearts, it leads to
deep resentment.”
130: “Few human joys are as deep and thrilling as those
experienced by two people who love one another and have
107: “Today we recognize that being able to forgive others
implies the liberating experience of understanding and
forgiving ourselves.”
131: Marriage is public because it is a leaving home to build a
new life co-responsibly with another. “Marriage is a means of
expressing that we have truly left the security of the home in
which we grew up in order to build other strong ties and to
take on a new responsibility for another person. This is much
more meaningful than a mere spontaneous association for
mutual gratification, which would turn marriage into a purely
private affair.”
108: “If we accept that God’s love is unconditional, that the
Father’s love cannot be bought or sold, then we will become
capable of showing boundless love and forgiving others even
if they have wronged us.”
116: “Love hopes all things. Love does not despair of the
future.” It shows us we can change and bring about a better
future.
120: “Conjugal love… the love between husband and wife… is
an ‘affective union,’ spiritual and sacrificial, which combines
the warmth of friendship and erotic passion, and endures long
after emotions and passion subside.”
122: “There is no need to lay upon two limited persons the
tremendous burden of having to reproduce perfectly the union
existing between Christ and his Church, for marriage as a sign
entails ‘a dynamic process…, one which advances gradually
with the progressive integration of the gifts of God.’” (quoting
John Paul II, Familiaris Consortio, 22 November 1981)
126: “Marital joy can be experienced even amid sorrow; it
involves accepting that marriage is an inevitable mixture of
enjoyment and struggles, tensions and repose, pain and relief,
satisfactions and longings, annoyances and pleasures, but
128: “Love opens our eyes and enables us to see, beyond all
else, the great worth of a human being.”
132: “To opt for marriage in this way expresses a genuine and
firm decision to join paths, come what may. Given its
seriousness, this public commitment of love cannot be the fruit
of a hasty decision, but neither can it be postponed
indefinitely.”
137 gives practical advice, especially for men: “Take time,
quality time. This means being ready to listen patiently and
attentively to everything the other person wants to say… Often
the other spouse does not need a solution to his or her
problems, but simply to be heard, to feel that someone has
acknowledge their pain, their disappointment, their fear, their
anger, their hopes and their dreams.”
143: “Desires, feelings, emotions… all have an important
place in married life. They are awakened whenever ‘another’
becomes present and part of a person’s life.”

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person,
there is not male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. ~ Galatians 3:28
Next week, our archdiocese will take up the
Peter’s Pence Collection, which provides Pope
Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his
charitable works around the world. The proceeds
benefit our brothers and sisters on the margins
of society, including victims of war, oppression,
and disasters. Join our Holy Father as a witness
of charity to those who are suffering.
“Charity is infec ous, it excites, it risks and it engages!
For true charity is always unmerited, uncondi onal and
gratuitous!” (Pope Francis, Homily, February 15, 2015)

God our Father,
you govern and protect your people
and shepherd them with a father’s love.
You place a father in a family as a sign
of your love, care, and constant protection.
May fathers everywhere be faithful
to the example shown in the Scriptures:
steadfast in love, forgiving transgressions,
sustaining the family, caring for those in need.
Give your wisdom to fathers that they may
encourage and guide their children.
Keep them healthy so they may support a family.
Guide every father with the Spirit of your love
that they may grow in holiness
and draw their family ever closer to you.
Amen.

KNOWING AMORIS LAETITIA (PART III)
146: “If passion accompanies a free act, it can manifest the
depth of that act.”
Emotional maturity in a family helps all the members grow,
decide and take on big projects.
146: “A family is mature when the emotional life of its members
becomes a form of sensitivity that neither stifles nor obscures
great decisions and values, but rather follows each one’s
freedom.”
149: “Married couples likewise respond to God’s will when they
take up the biblical injunction: ‘Be joyful in the day of
prosperity.’” (Ecclesiastes 7:14)
150: “Sexual desire is not something to be looked down upon.”
152: “In no way, then, can we consider the erotic dimension of
love simply as a permissible evil or a burden to be tolerated for
the good of the family.”
153: “Sex often becomes depersonalized and unhealthy; as a
result, ‘it becomes the occasion and instrument for selfassertion and the selfish satisfaction of personal desires and
instincts.’” (quoting John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae, 25 March
1995)
158-162 emphasize the value of non-married vocations for the
Church:
158: “Many people who are unmarried are not only devoted to
their own family but often render great service in their group of
friends, in the Church community and in their professional
lives. Their dedication greatly enriches the family, the Church
and society.” (quoting Relatio Finalis 2015, 22)
159: “Virginity is a form of love… It is also a reflection of the
fullness of heaven.”
161: “Virginity and marriage are, and must be, different ways of
loving. For ‘man cannot live without love. He remains a being
that is incomprehensible for himself, his life is senseless, if love
is not revealed to him.’” (quoting John Paul II, Redemptor
Hominis, 4 March 1979)
164: “We love the other person for who they are, not simply for
their body. Although the body ages, it still expresses that
personal identity that first won our heart. Even if others can no
longer see the beauty of that identity, a spouse continues to
see it with the eyes of love and so his or her affection does not
diminish.” TO BE CONTINUED …
156: “Every form of sexual submission must be clearly
rejected.”

Parish Hall
Beginning today, June 19th,
and for the following eight days, (through
Monday, June 27th) prayers for fathers
will be offered at Masses celebrated
here at St. Peter Claver.
In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, be mindful we all
are called to mercifully shepherd our children and their families. One way
is to be informed about predatory dangers and to have loving, educated
eyes on the youngest of our brothers and sisters.
If you are planning to be involved in parish or school ministries/activities,
the archdiocese requires you to receive VIRTUS training.
The next opportunity for training here at St. Peter Claver will be
Saturday, June 25th at 9am. Both the initial and re-certification classes
are being offered concurrently. For more information, or to register
for class, please call Mary in the parish office at 526-6499.

Your St. Vincent de Paul Conference, here at St. Peter Claver Parish would like to thank all of you who have
so generously donated to our fund to help the working poor individuals and families who, for one reason or
another, find themselves unable to meet their most pressing obligations and are asking for assistance.
Since we first started, we are receiving a steady increase in calls for assistance. The jobs and their paychecks
can’t seem to keep up with increasing costs here in Simi, like most cities across the country. We have found
an increasing number of women, living in their cars, who have asked us for gas money or money to get
their cars fixed. We are looking for any auto-repair parishioners who might identify themselves to us as being
willing, if need be, to assist with towing or checking on these cars to see what the problems might be; and if
they are commissioned by us, might be willing to negotiate a lesser price for the needed repairs.
If this is something that you can help us with, please contact us through the parish office.
Thanks to all of you again for your continued support, donations and prayers.
You are in our prayers. ~the St. Peter Claver Conference of St. Vincent de Paul

Under the direction of these service groups we will help with painting, cleaning,
construction and home repair, crafting, and even singing.

to obtain a form. Register by June 30th.
*** Mandatory orientation is scheduled on Wednesday, July 13th at 7pm

Is there someone you used to see at Mass on Sundays that you haven’t seen in a while?
Would you like to let them know that they are missed and it’s not the same without them?
In our pamphlet rack by the sacristy, there are postcards available that you can send
to let them know that you are thinking of them, and that they are missed by us all.
Join ICF Branch #443 on Sunday, June 26th, from 3pm to 7pm at Rancho Tapo Community Park

Únanse a nuestro Santo
Padre como un testigo de la caridad para aquellos que sufren.
“La Caridad contagia,
apasiona, arriesga y
compromete. Porque la
Caridad verdadera
siempre es inmerecida,
incondicional y gratuita”.

Realize above all that you
are in God’s presence . . .
empty yourself completely
and sit waiting, content with
the grace of God, like a

Protect kids from bullying while playing online - The pace of online gaming is only growing. There is a
small but real chance that victimization could occur when kids play and interact with others on phones,
tablets, laptops, desktops and gaming consoles. A helpful way to teach children about handling problems is
to encourage them to report issues when they arise. Internet service providers and gaming networks have
systems set up to field complaints of abuse and then investigate them (in conjunction with law
enforcement, when necessary). For more tips on how to help protect young people from vulnerabilities
while playing online please email jvienna@la-archdiocese.org or call (213) 637-7227 to receive a copy of
the VIRTUS® article “Preventing Cyberbullying in Online Gaming, Part 2.”
