Winning the Agentine Open is the dream of every polo professional. Two of the few players who managed to enter their name into the prestigious list of winners of this most famous polo tournament of the world are Facundo and Gonzalo Pieres. But now the two 10-goalers have a new dream. In 2015/2016 they will compete with a team consisting only of players of the Pieres family, a setup that will go down as a new chapter in polo history. We met with the Pieres brothers when visiting their sponsor, the Swiss luxury watchmaker Hublot in Geneva. Even though we start our August edition with the two stars from Argentina, from a sports perspective this edition focuses on Europe. With the Gold Cup in the UK and the British Polo Day we focus on two British tournaments before making a connection between the sunny part of Switzerland and South America by reporting on the Hublot Polo Cup which had Brazil as this year’s host country. Our tournament journey continues to the Polo Park Zurich and from there on to the De Grisogono Polo Masters in the impressively beautiful Polo Club Villa a Sesta in Tuscany. Their father Gonzalo Pieres senior is a legend and Facundo and Gonzalo Pieres junior are among the world’s best polo players with handicap 10. The brothers collect trophies at the prestigious tournaments around the globe like other people collect stamps. So far they consider winning the Argentine Open 2012 as their most valuable victory. But they have a dream: Winning the highest-ranking polo tournament in the world with players coming exclusively from the Pieres family. At the Argentine Open 2015/2016 they hope to turn their dream into reality with their new family team. Recently the Pieres brothers visited the headquarters of Piaget in Switzerland. The luxury watchmaker is a committed sponsor to the polo sport all over the world. Since two years the Pieres brothers are Piaget Brand Ambassadors. Polo Luxury & Country Life Magazine met with Facundo and Gonzalo Pieres junior in Geneva for the interview. Interview: Birgit Hügli-Herrmann What role do you think your parents and your whole family had in your career and success? I think they played a big big role for all of us. Because we started playing polo being inspired by our parents – we are three brothers and our father used to play polo, and also our cousins’ father played polo. And for sure, if they wouldn’t have played polo we probably wouldn’t play it either. You often hear of sons who don’t want to carry on the family business because they can’t live up to their parents’ expectations. You are born into a famous polo dynasty, was it difficult for you to meet the spectators’ expectations? And do you feel pressure and expectations because it’s a family business? Being born into a legendary polo family has really much more advantages than disadvantages. You have many extremely good teachers who nurture your ambition, you can use a lot of good horses and you always have excellent players for training. Being part of the Pieres family and our Ellesterina team is both an honour and a commitment. Ellesterina is a big organisation, there are a lot of spectators. But we agree, it’s good to have such a famous family and a family team. 7 Polo Luxur y & Countr y Life Magazine | Issue 03 | 2015 Die 10-Goaler Facundo and Gonzalo Pieres Ihre Familie pflegt eine lange und hoch erfolgreiche Polotradition. Facundo Pieres, Gonzalo Pieres, Mariano Aguerre and Nicolas Pieres Polo takes you all over the world. But your heart beats in Argentina. Where do you live with your family? Is it in the countryside or in a city? We live in the countryside, about 45 minutes away from the city in a town called Rodriguez. You have played all the big international polo competitions and have won a lot of them. What are your greatest sporting successes? Our biggest success was winning the 2012 Argentine Open. This was probably the best thing ever! In 2014/2015 you lost the final of the Campeonato Argentino Abierto de Polo with Ellesterina against La Dolfina at 12-14 goals. I have heard you have a special aim for the Argentine Open 2015/16? Would you tell us some more about this aim? Oh yes, we really have a special aim for 2015/2016! Our aim is to win the Argentine Open again with the new team! Polito has never won it yet, and if we can win it with the four Pieres in the field, it will be amazing! Sometimes we play together and sometimes it’s mixed. What do you prefer? We prefer to play together. But in polo you don’t play in the same team for the whole year. You always play in different teams, so most of the time your team gets changed. But in Argentina at the most important tournament we play the four of us together. Do you feel particularly attached to any polo club? Yes, to our own club, Ellesterina, which our father build and started the business. We play for it and hopefully we can play for Ellesterina for the rest of our lives. We feel very attached to this team. We also try to pass it on to the next generation, to our children. The four members of your Ellesterina polo team are Brand Ambassadors for the Swiss luxury watchmaker Piaget since 2014. How important is a professional sponsoring for you and your team? For polo as for all kinds of professional sport, sponsoring is really important – without sponsors we would not be where we are today. The sponsors and the media coverage are the only things that can promote the sport globally. The combination of both give popularity to polo and we think it is very important for sponsors to give a hand in the game. We are absolutely delighted that with Piaget we have found a partner who gives such generous support to us and to many international polo events. Do you play for money or for passion? If you wouldn’t be paid so well for this job, would you still do it just because it is your real passion? In this house we are in two minds about this. Since many years, polo is the passion of our family and we all love this passion very much. But polo is our profession too. To play polo on a high level, in addition to talent you need very good horses, time and places to train the horses and opportunities to play top tournaments with the horses. All this costs a lot of money. You all started your career very young. What did you feel the moment when you arrived at 10 goals? We started with polo when we were children, that’s normal in a family of polo players. To arrive at 10 goals is a dream of every polo professional. The first time you are part of the 10-goalers is a tremendous moment when finally the goal is in sight. To arrive at 10 goals is a long and hard way, but you have to work even harder to stay at 10 goals for a long time. In Europe we call polo the ‘sport of kings’. In most countries polo is an elitist sport. It’s my feeling that polo in Argentina is much more popular. If you compare polo in Argentina and other places of the world, what are the main differences? Polo in Argentina is very popular, much more than in other places of the world. And in Argentina we play more aggressive. Most of the best players come from Argentina. And the most valuable polo tournaments are played here. In the middle of the city in Palermo, Buenos Aires, you have a big polo stadium, this is like a football arena. It must be a tremendous feeling to play in such a stadium, isn’t it? Oh yes, it is fantastic. 15,000 people or more come to watch the Argentine Open; it feels like the world championship for football. The fans were thrilled to watch the top 8 teams taking part, which means that 32 of the best polo players in the world are playing. 11 Polo Luxur y & Countr y Life Magazine | Issue 03 | 2015 THE HOME OF POLO IN ITALY TOURNAMENT Trofeo Citta di MILANO 20 SEPTEMBER 2015 in collaboration with official supplier and official media partner MILANO POLO CLUB | VIA CARDUCCI, 8 - 20123 MILANO (MI) | CAMPO DI GIOCO A MILANO C/O CASERMA SANTA BARBARA www.milanopoloclub.it | segreteria@milanopoloclub.it POLO How important are the horses in polo sport? What special skills and characteristics qualify an excellent polo horse in your opinion? Do you train your horses yourself or is this more the job of your grooms? Horses are very important. In order to be successful, a world class polo player needs a lot of great horses. We need to train and spend a lot of time with our horses to become professional and become a good couple. For example the Triple Crown tournaments in Argentina (Tortugas Open, Hurlingham Open and Argentine Open) were playing with 8 chukkers. How many horses do you need for these big competitions? For a season in Argentina, which takes 3 to 4 months, we have around 20 horses for each player of our teams. Thank you very much and good luck for your big aim. 13 Polo Luxur y & Countr y Life Magazine | Issue 03 | 2015 POLO British Open Polo Championship 2015 – Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup King Power Foxes claiming victory More than 14,000 spectators were at Cowdray Park Polo Club in West Sussex on Sunday 19th July to watch the finals of the 2015 Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup for the British Open Championships. Two amazing teams, King Power Foxes and UAE fiercely competed for the most coveted Gold Cup, with King Power Foxes ultimately claiming victory with a comfortable margin of 14-8. King Power Foxes, the team of ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha, entered the final with great expectations, having just won the 2015 Queen’s Cup with Top’s new line-up of 10 goal Pieres brothers, Gonzalito and Facundo, and young 1 goal English player Hugo Lewis. The all proside of UAE consisted of 10-goaler Pablo MacDonough, the leading goal scorer of the British Open, Santiago Stirling (4 goals), experienced high goal player Lucas Monteverde (8 goals) and 16 year old Jose Ramon Araya, currently playing off 0 goals, whose handicap will no doubt rocket after his performance in the UK this year. Both teams competed hard to get the chance to raise the Gold Cup on the podium. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup Final saw the victory of the blue shirts from King Power Foxes who battled to take the lead and closed with an impressive score of 14-8 against UAE. 2015 also marks the first year for Jaeger-LeCoultre as Title Sponsor, further strengthening our long-standing relationship as the Official Timekeeper of Cowdray Park Polo Club, the most prestigious and oldest polo club in the UK. Yesterday (Saturday 20th June), VIP and guests including host Urs Schwarzenbach, HH Maharaja Sawai Padmanabh, The Marquess of Blandford, Viscount Melville, The Duke of Argyll, Lady Violet and Alice Manners, Ron Wahid, Nikki Mehta, Sir Jackie Stewart and Stephanie Powers marked the enduring legacy that exists between the two countries while raising almost £ 150,000 for charity. 18 POLO Hackett Cronan Cup British Polo Day GB The afternoon’s polo soon had VIPs and guests braving the elements to stand pitchside as the Qatar Airways British Exiles took on the Royal Salute Commonwealth Team in the opening Hackett Cronan Cup. These two very closely-matched teams – at 13 goals – battled hard. The Royal Salute Commonwealth Team’s Tom Hunt and Simon Keyte left the Qatar Airways British Exiles adrift by 3-1 however magic by George Meyrick and Satnam Dhillon in particular changed the course of the match and a subsequent three goals resulted in a 5-5 draw. Then, following a quintessential British afternoon tea and the customary treading of the divots, the RJI Capital British Schools Team took to the pitch against the México Polo Team – our kind hosts of British Polo Day Mexico – in the Land Rover River Field Plate. Undeterred by the thunderstorm overhead, the México Team drew first blood with Diego Solorozano scoring a penalty from the 40 yard spot. Thereafter the strong trio of Imelda de Alba. JJ de Alba and Luis Perez kept the Mexicans in the lead, emerging triumphant with a 3-2 victory. The official British Polo Day Great Britain prizegiving marked the end of a great day’s polo. The crowd gathered to see Urs Schwarzenbach jointly present the Royal Salute Commonwealth and Qatar Airways British Exiles Teams with the bespoke British Silverware designed Hackett Cronan Cup. He founded the Prague Polo Club in 2008, which was renamed to Gill Polo. His philosophy is: “From a one-toone personal lesson to a full company event – we have the staff, the experience, the resources and the passion to make whatever it is you want happen.’’ With his wife Sarka, Naveed Gill decided to establish and develop polo as one of the top equestrian activities in the Czech Republic. Gill Polo is about the passion for polo turned into reality. Naveed, at the beginning please complete the following sentence: For me polo is... my life, but first and foremost for me polo is a sport. Naveed, what was your reason to found your own polo club? Thanks for asking, several reasons actually. I was at a time in my life when I wanted a completely different challenge rather than the one I had for a number of years – being a CEO of a telecommunications company. I was passionate about polo and knew that it didn’t exist in the Czech Republic, so I saw a big challenge: to establish not only a club but the entire sport – I wanted to leave something for the history books. For more information about the Prague Polo Club – Gill Polo, go to: www.gillpolo.com Please, give us an overview of your polo club and the training possibilities and tournaments. Training is all year round as we have 2 indoor arenas, 2 outdoor all-weather arenas and a polo field. As polo is new in the Czech Republic, our tournaments are usually organised for our beginner members. I try to hold at least 2 major tournaments per year – the Spring Arena Tournament and the Czech Snow Polo Masters tournament. How many people play polo in the Czech Republic? At the moment probably around 15 to 18, of which I would say 3 to 4 are really serious players. Would you please tell us a little bit about your profession and your polo background? My profession is club president, polo trainer, polo event organiser – I do it all with help from my wife. I do polo every day. I start with exercising the ponies, then schooling them, then giving lessons, then working with sponsors and partners. I’m just organising the first-ever polo tournament in the Eastern Czech Republic – Morava. It will happen from July 31st to August 1st – a simple 2-day grass event. However, the field will be only 100 x 50 m and we just have teams of 2 players – I want to get the sponsors happy with POLO before going big, and by having 2 vs 2 on grass we’ll have fast/action polo, so the audience will be pleased too. I always try to do innovative polo events where we can meet the expectations of sponsors, players and the audience. I started to play in 2006, trained with Santiago Torriguitar, then in the UK with 4-goalers Michael Ffrench Blake, Michael Howe and Timothy Vaux. As I’m British it was just easier to train with them. Before I started to play polo I was a show jumper, but I got hooked immediately the first time I tried polo in Sotogrande in 2006. From that moment I wanted to start polo in the Czech Republic and I knew I would sooner or later. What is your handicap? I play off +1 – I do not have time to improve my handicap as I am busy teaching! Elias Gill Do you have members of your family (children, your wife, brothers or sisters) who play polo? I taught my wife and oldest son to play. My son (13 now) started when he was 9 – I had already taught him how to ride from the age of 5 and between 5 to 9 he did jumping – then I started the polo club and he started. Now he doesn’t want to do anything else, he is also quite good. My wife, who can also ride but had never played polo, told me she would never play even when I started the club. Then I brought home a new polo pony – she fell in love and started immediately. Where do you live with your family? We live all year round just outside of Prague. Tell us something about your polo passion, please. I say that my family has my heart but polo has my soul – I am truly truly in love with this amazing sport. What does Naveed say about himself? I have always said vision with execution is a hallucination – so when I spoke to family and friends about starting a club, I knew that I had to do what I say! Where do you buy your horses? Or do you have your own stud in the Czech Republic? I only buy my horses in the UK. I’m only a polo player, not a breeder. What is your favourite pastime when you are not on the polo field? My favourite pastime is to spend time with my sons – Elias (13) and Emir (7) – I can never get enough time with them. Do you have another specific hobby apart from polo? Only polo, okay, sometimes snowboarding, too! In 2013 you hosted the first-ever Arena Polo tournament. One year later Gill Polo organised the first Polo on Snow in the Czech Republic. What are you planning for the future? Birgit, that’s a secret at the moment, but I promise you will be invited to be a part of it. The historical tradition of German craftsmanship was regarded as exceptional in the world, which made the exhibition and the quality of the exhibited products a very special experience. By Matthias Philipp LIFE S TYLE Herrnhuther Sterne Visitor in front of Schindelhauer Bikes ‘Handmade in Germany’ understands itself as a label that wants to draw the attention to those products that are created through the individual workmanship by artists, designers and artisans. The exhibition shows the sensual side of German production. Not efficiency and engineering genius are center stage here, but luxurious products that take time to be crafted and require a focus on detail from their creators that lend them a very special aura. This way the exhibition mixes world-renowned luxury brands such as Königliche Porzellan Manufaktur Berlin, Fürstenberg or Burmester with individual designers and art studios such as fash ion designer Frank Leder, Mayer’sche Hofkunstanstalt and the prestige horology of Nomos Glashütte. Especially in China, the currently most important luxury market of the world, these products from Germany are – compared to the competitors from Italy or France – still relatively unknown. However, anyone who can afford it usually prefers to live in comfortable surroundings with ample space and a high standard of finishes. Nonetheless, the priorities can be very different. A dwelling in the city is quite unlike the home of a person preferring to live in the countryside. And those who favour a contemporary loft will hardly ever be tempted to get involved in renovating a cottage protected as a historic monument. Whether it’s about a new construction, the alteration, extension or conversion of an existing property, or the restoration of a historic building – the ideas of fine living are as diverse as mankind itself. Being able to turn those dreams into reality can sometimes be a lengthy and certainly also exciting journey that the owners take together with architects, interior decorators and landscapers. While in the old days buying a property has been a lifetime decision, today with the growing mobility also the property market has changed. Now, many houses and apartments change hands after just a few years. Nevertheless, your own four walls increasingly become a haven of peace and privacy once again. The way how you live has become an expression of individuality and self-fulfilment, and – this remains unchanged – an unmistakeable statement of success. 44 LIFE S TYLE Special Part I: Building, converting or buying My home is my castle – make residential dreams come true Wohnen ist ein Grundbedürfnis des Menschen. Here, diversity is key. Supported by the renowned Swiss interior decorator Kathrin Schmied, in our intro feature we take a look at the issue of buying, converting and renovating real-estate. Kathrin Schmied advises to take an architect or interior decorator on board already before purchasing an existing property. On the one hand, such an expert will give you a realistic assessment of the purchase price, but will also be able to analyse the existing building structure and tell you what kind of alterations will be possible from an engineering perspective. “Many a buyer who first purchased a property and only then took his architect and/or interior decorator on board experienced a nasty surprise. Structural defects, poor structural stability or a building structure that will not be able to support the planned conversion can cause high additional costs. You have to be especially careful when purchasing any property that is protected as a national monument.” © herreneck – Fotolia While in the past, the kitchen, living and dining room had been separate areas, today – mostly in modern houses – the kitchen is an open space and quite often even blends in to form a unit with the living and dining area. One of the reasons for this trend is the fact that the kitchen has changed from a mere working room for the housewife to the centrepiece of the house. Kitchens as status symbols are very much en vogue and today can easily reach the price of a luxury Italian sports car or even more, depending on the level of finishes and customised extra features. 48 Whether living, dining and kitchen will indeed be designed as an open integrated space is in Kathrin Schmied’s experience mostly a question of the type of property (new or conversion) and in particular the preference of the future users. Garden staging Home staging, a thing that has been around in the US for a long time to bring a property into perfect shape for selling, has also become known in Europe for quite some time. Less known but nonetheless equally appealing is garden staging. This variety of home improvement focuses on increasing a property’s value by making the most out of the area surrounding the house. 51 Polo Luxur y & Countr y Life Magazine | Issue 03 | 2015 LIFEST YL E Just like the kitchen, also the bathrooms have experienced a change in status. For quite some time, the bathroom is no longer merely a place of personal hygiene. Increasingly, the bathroom becomes a multi-functional zone which can also be used as a wellness temple or health room. For Kathrin Schmied, when deciding on the number and design of bathrooms, the basic question is whether you are dealing with a house or an apartment. In the expert’s opinion, this will determine whether you plan individual en-suite units, i.e. one bathroom for each bedroom, or cluster units like master bedroom with en-suite bathroom, a communal bathroom for the children’s area, and one for the guest zone. Depending on the available budget and space, you may consider installing an indoor and/or outdoor pool, while you should not forget about the costly maintenance, apart from the actual building cost. When it comes to deciding whether you want a home theatre or not, the expert points towards space, budget and customer expectation as the main factors. For the perfect home cinema experience you need a separate room, while a large screen with good sound quality can be integrated both in the living area and in a library. A wine cellar, however, is almost a must in our time – at least for wine lovers. For fine wine needs well-groomed surroundings. When it comes to technological implements in and around the house, today you have a virtually unlimited array of equipment and functions to electronically control and monitor almost any aspect of your home. The question rather is to what extent the future residents are interested in making use of all these options. If the owners place a high importance on security, this will need to be discussed already at an early stage of the planning phase. Depending on the required level of protection, it will often make sense to involve a company specialising in security systems. 55 Schwerpunkte im Segment Wohnen in den kommenden Magazinen • • • • • • • • Wohn und Essen Küchen Bad und Wellness-Bereich Schlafen / Kinder- und Jugendzimmer Weinkeller Heimkino – Unterhaltungselektronik Sicherheit rund um Haus und Garten Schwimmbad und Sauna Polo Luxur y & Countr y Life Magazine | Issue 03 | 2015 LIFEST YL E 56 LIFE S TYLE ‘The Floating Seahorse’ Another world of first Photos: Kleindienst Group 57 ‘The Floating Seahorse’ – launched by Kleindienst Group at the ‘Dubai International Boat Show’ is a totally unique concept which has been intelligently designed, engineered and developed in Dubai. ‘The Floating Seahorse’ is essentially a boat not a villa. What makes the Venice Biennale so different – and so special? Giovanna Bertazzoni, International Head of Impressionist and Modern Art, Christie’s: “Being Italian, the Biennale has been part of my life since I was a child. My father is from Venice, and I was taken to visit the Biennale when I was just 10 or 11 years old. It began to be a pivotal event every two years and, as a student, I started to come independently. The Biennale offers you the chance to see the direction in which the contemporary art world is going. Having known Venice as a child, it’s incredibly exciting to see the city transform into a bustling melting pot of races, languages and artistic approaches from across the whole world.” What have you seen, and what have you liked? David Linley, Honorary Chairman, Christie’s Europe, Middle East, Russia & India: “Upcoming young Chinese artist Jia Aili has transformed the Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi with a small exhibition – there are just six pictures, but they are incredibly powerful. At the Pa-lazzo Fortuny, Boris Vervoodt has created magic yet again, with the Anish Kapoor room being particularly interesting. Though it’s somewhat hard to get to, the Armenian exhibition has beautiful elements – as does the 64 Jaume Plensa show at the basilica of San Giorgio Maggiore. I recommend visiting at dusk, when the lights of the church are out except for those trained on Plensa’s wire sculptures. It’s a beautiful space, and the artist has made something that is totally unique.” What are you most excited about seeing at the Biennale? Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, hailed as one of the foremost creators of artworks for public spaces, brings his show Together to the Basilica of San Giorgio, a church he describes as ‘probably the most beautiful in Venice’. These new works reflect Plensa’s interest in the body’s relationship to space, scale, material and place. The artist, who has long been interested in breaking down barriers, sets up a conversation in the space between the two vast sculptures, Amin Jaffer, Christie’s International Director Asian Art: “I am very excited about the Italian pavilion (and I am not saying this only for patriotic reasons). Vincenzo Trione is the youngest curator that Italy has ever had for a Biennale and I am keen to discover his curatorial project, the Italian Code, which aims to disclose the genetic code of Italian art from Transavanguardia and Arte Povera to the last generations of Italian one situated in the foreground of the altar, and the other in the nave, seeking to connect and communicate on an intuitive level. The central piece, a structure of toy train rails built into a floating circuit fixed with engine cars riding into space, was the hook for other constructions such as a hanging of jacquard satin would-be garments and a shrewd composition of wood stretchers. In his show statement, Fossati writes, 'These works should be seen in that zone between poetic idea and corporeality.' If Pellegrin’s intent was to forge a dream state in the real world, he certainly accomplished that task for us as we walked home in the twilight along a sparkling sea.” What has been your all-time Venice Biennale highlight? Michael Jeha, Christie’s Managing Director for the Middle East: “The camaraderie and pure delight during the first year of the UAE pavilion was unique. Working in the Middle Eastern art world, we were not used to seeing an Arab country making a sustained effort at being present in Venice so this was all rather moving, especially because we sensed it was there to stay. We like it so much because it is a perfect place for anchorage, it is the place for birdwatching and finding shells, and it is great to go diving. It was the place where, every time we visited, were able to dive with the eagle rays. Hogsty is an uninhabited huge atoll-like structure, and as it is so remote, that hardly anyone is visiting. But thousands of birds are looking for a shelter every evening. There are two small sandy islands, one only visible at low tide. The bigger island is a beautiful patch of sand and home to many birds. It is perfect for a walk and for photographing birds, and little creatures living in the sand, like hermit crabs for instance. Two impressive shipwrecks mark the reef. TREBISNJICA was wrecked on the eastern part of the reef in 1963. This ship is well on its way to being reduced to dust. The second shipwreck lies on the southern part of the reef. It is much smaller, and looks like an inter-island freighter – maybe 120 feet long. This wreck appears to be much more recent and is in much better shape. The name – still plainly visible – is Lady Eagle. Seagulls are using it to sleep on the railings, and even eagles are feeling at home on Lady Eagle. 73 Polo Luxur y & Countr y Life Magazine | Issue 03 | 2015 T R AVEL The diving in Hogsty is really spectacular – there are hardly any reports or information available. Nobody dives there, so it is really exploratory diving. The waters are clear, as the area is on the borderline from the Caribbean to the Atlantic Ocean. The reef-walls rise almost vertically from unknown depths to the surface, and many pelagic fish species hunt in these waters. It is one of the few areas, where encounters with the beautifully patterned eagle rays are frequent. The animals with a wingspan of maybe 2 meters have a long tail, up to 5 meters or more. When they glide by alongside of us, it is a truly majestic feeling! It is this kind of encounters which motivates us to go on with boating and diving!
