September 29, 2013 4 Parish News, Events & Activities Come out with the entire family on Sunday, October 27th at 9am for the 5th Annual Saint Andrew Parish’s Running of the Bulldog 5K race Registration is posted on www.saintandrewchicago.com Mark your calendars!! Saturday, October 5th 11am on the Church Steps September 29, 2013 5 Parish News, Events & Activities PILGRIMAGE! The Church of All Nations near the Mount of Olives. Have you ever read the Bible and wondered what life was like back then? Or maybe as you’ve listened to the readings at Mass on Sunday you’ve tried to imagine what the scene would have looked like. Perhaps you need not wonder any longer. Saint Andrew Parish is exploring the possibility of organizing a pilgrimage to the Holy Land sometime in early 2015. Before we make any definitive plans, we are having an informational meeting to gauge interest, to explain what you might expect out of a pilgrimage, and to answer any initial questions you may have. To that end, we have scheduled an informational meeting for Wednesday, October 9th at 7:00pm in the Chapel. Please come if you are interested. Fr. Sergio Romo BACKGROUND: Main entrance to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre FEED THE HUNGRY The Chicago Food Depository needs volunteers to sort and repackage food before it can be distributed to those in need throughout Cook County . The work is not difficult, requiring only some light lifting and bending at most, and the process is interesting, and even fun. Ten volunteers from St. Andrew are needed Saturday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. until 12 noon. If you can help, please contact Kathy Sellman at (773) 929-2333 or kmsellman@yahoo.com. Thank you. (Volunteers 14 – 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult.) facebook.com/SaintAndrewChicago EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Friday, October 4, 2013 6:30pm Mass followed by Holy Hour with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction in the Chapel September 29, 2013 6 Parish News, Events & Activities Fr. Matthias Update After discussions with Archdiocesan officials and immigration lawyers it seems that the best option for Fr. Matthias to gain access to the US for his annual visit will be for him to apply for a religious worker visa. This type of visa requires more documentation, additional fees, and the approval of the Archdiocese of Chicago. I have spoken with Archdiocesan officials to explain Fr. Matthias’ long standing relationship with our parish, and they have agreed to help him attain the appropriate visa. The average turn around time for this type of visa is six months. This would mean that the earliest Fr. Matthias would be able to visit us would be in the spring. Like all of you, I will miss his annual fall visit this year. I had hoped to reconnect with him after having spent an amazing time visiting his parish. But, I look forward to seeing him relatively soon, once he has his visa and the time to visit. In light of this unforeseen delay it seems that waiting to take up a collection until he arrives could prove to be a hardship for his parish. So, I propose we take up a collection to support Fr Matthias’ ministries on the weekend of October 19/20. This will ensure that all the good work that is taking place in St Charles will continue without interruption. September 29, 2013 7 School News 2013 National Blue Ribbon Award I am delighted and very proud to let you know that this past week Saint Andrew School was named a 2013 National Blue Ribbon School by the US Department of Education. This is a prestigious recognition based on exceptional academic performance. A large share of the thanks goes to Mr. Allen Ackermann for his leadership as principal. Four years ago Mr. Ackermann became our principal after serving for several years as our vice-principal. Since that time, our school enrollment has grown and academic scores have increased. In addition to this, Mr. Ackermann has consistently worked to uphold and promote the school’s Catholic identity. I am also thankful of Mrs. Sarah Casavechia, the administration, teachers and staff for their dedication and tireless work. Every day these individuals go above and beyond the call of duty to help our children grow in knowledge and maturity. I would also like to thank our parents, the School Advisory Board, Room Parents, and all of our volunteers. No administration, faculty or staff can do it all. The partnership of many people is necessary in any successful venture. And finally, but by no means the least, I want to thank our Saint Andrew students. Thank you for your hard work, for your hunger for knowledge, and for striving for excellence. I am constantly amazed at what you are able to accomplish both in and outside of the classroom. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, I never tire boasting about you to my priest friends. All of the funds collected, except for the cost of the candy, go directly to organized groups that service the needs of the intellectually disabled and learning disabled in local parishes, as well as in the community, such as Special Olympics. Stop by to help out a good cause, and get yourself a Tootsie Roll. BABY BOTTLE PROJECT Beginning October 5th, our Church will be participatin in the Baby Bottle Project benefiting the Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organizatin directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnacies by offering emotional, financial, material and spiritual support through counseling, clothing and monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. Each year the three locations together have over 5,000 appointments with expecting Mothers. By God’s Grace, The Women’s Centers have saved over 36,000 babies and their mothers from abortion since opening in 1984. Please take a Baby Bottle home with you from the Church on October 55-6, fill it with your spare change, and return the weekend of October 27th This is a simple, but crucial fundraising effort for the Women’s Centers. Please note the Baby Bottles cost almost $1.00 per bottle and are recycled afterwards so please return upon completion of the project. September 29, 2013 Please support our generous Soiree and Scramble Sponsors: Philip K. Bandle Vice President, Investments 773.880.2192 LOCATED AT: 1946 West Irving Park Road 12 September 29, 2013 Congratulations St. Andrew School!!! On Tuesday, September 24, the U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, recognized Saint Andrew School as part of the 2013 cohort of National Blue Ribbon Schools. This is a prestigious honor that represents excellence in education. We can all be proud of this accomplishment that has become a reality because of the teamwork between students, teachers, parents and administrators. Our Spirit- Study- Service way of life has never been more evident! We are proud and we are humbled for this honor. Saint Andrew is a safe and supportive school for the whole child, promoting academic success, spiritual awareness and service for the common good. Saint Andrew has a rich history and a strong presence in today’s educational community. Its Spirit- StudyService values are woven into every facet of life. Saint Andrew has been described as more than a school, but a way of life. It is the expression of selfsacrificing, good hearted people that make the community of Saint Andrew so special. Saint Andrew’s dedication to study is exemplified in our small class size that fosters a positive atmosphere for learning where students scaffold their success and gain confidence from a ‘just right’ challenge. Extracurricular opportunities are abundant and help foster a self-assured student. Our commitment to service and sacrifice is apparent in school projects that are not focused on student reward. The partnership between teachers and parents is evident by an active school board that serves on committees, such as finance, athletics, marketing, admissions, facilities, events, fundraising, volunteers, middle school advisory and spiritual awareness. Saint Andrew teachers have a passion for teaching and are dedicated to student success. An active parent partnership, dedicated teachers and high academic standards ensures that Saint Andrew will continue to hold a prominent place educating children for years to come. We are proud of our past and excited for our future! Thank you for being part of this Blue Ribbon School!
