When Karen, Josh, and I
moved to Powder
Springs in late summer
of 2000 to begin serving
at Macland Baptist
Church, I realized very
quickly that I was privileged to be a part of
something very special. I knew that I had
come to a strong church
with a rich heritage of
Biblical preaching and
evangelism and a longstanding tradition of
hymns and Southern
Gospel music. I was
blessed to follow a long
line of very capable pastors and church leaders
who had a heart to worship God and to reach
lost souls, and I pray we
will retain those values
as we press forward in
our efforts to carry out
the Great Commission in
the months and years
ahead.
On Saturday, July 24 we
will be observing our
50th Homecoming with
a very special weekend
celebration. We will begin our celebration on
Saturday night with a
concert by the Talley
Trio. They have been to
our church on two previous occasions and
blessed us with songs
like, "His Life for Mine,"
"This Blood," and
"Hallelujah Praise the
Lamb." The service will
start at 6 pm. You might
want to arrive early to
get a good seat.

Foster. Bro. Johnny
served our church as pastor from 1977 to 1987
and returned to serve as
minister of music in
early 1990s. They are
sure to be a blessing and
will help close out a
celebration we will long
remember.
The Sunday Schedule for
our 50th Homecoming
will be similar to our
normal schedule, but
with a few very special
features. We will have
Sunday School and
morning worship at our
normal times, and we
will be featuring the
Macland Baptist Choir
and musicians at their
very best. I will recognize most of our previous pastors and many
previous staff members
who served and blessed
our church before I deliver a message from
God's Word. At the conclusion of the service,
we will open a time capsule that was placed in
the cornerstone of the
original sanctuary almost
50 years ago. Sunday
evening will feature the
I hope through all of this,
we will remember to
give all praise and glory
to God. We owe everything to Him, and we
will need His presence,
guidance, and blessing as
we seek to move our
church forward in reaching the lost carrying out
His will.

Prayer Warriors. This summer
our college students are heading to Quito, Ecuador to labor
among the lost and unreached. This trip will focus
on helping IMB Church Planters in the city establish and
strengthen their ministry. Our
team will be doing community
outreach, in-home Bible studies, helping in house churches,
doing ministry in the city
parks, and helping with Vacation Bible School. Please consider committing to praying for
the team as they prepare to
serve, and during their trip.

First, let me just take a moment
and reflect on this wonderful
Psalm. I think it is one of my
favorites because it gives me a
benchmark, of sorts, as to what
I should be about as Man. I am
to worship with JOY unashamed. I am to SING and be
thankful. It also tells me age is
no factor in our service to
HIM. Young and old, we all
have a place in the Kingdom of
God.
On Wednesday, July 13, I
would like to invite you to join
me on a journey designed just
for those who have reached
that glorious age of retirement.
I am calling this new ministry
"The Celebration Singers", and

doing here at Macland. This summer our choir/Orchestra voted on

On Sunday, August 7, we will
launch the new church year with
an exciting day of worship and
fellowship in the 10:30 a.m. service. All ages will be part of this
service - children, students, and
adults. In the 6:00 p.m. service
our students will lead in the service and will also share about
their recent mission trips to Philadelphia along with our college
students sharing their experience
in Ecuador.
Also, our Men's Ensemble will
sing "Singing With The Saints"
and Our Hand bells will play
"Amazing Grace".
Its going to be an exciting day of
worship.
But, We need your help! Do you

is the delightful Patsy Wise. Patsy
is an active WMU member and is
in Gene Hice’s SS Class.
Evening Group, Monday, July
11, at 6:00 p.m. in the fellowship
hall. Karen Karac will be the
speaker. Karen sings in the choir,
is active in WMU and Goodtimers and helps in the Children's
Ministry.

Cobb County. This publication
will enable thousands of readers
to celebrate the best of Cobb
County and stay current with the
latest information about our
community. Factbook and our ad

The Goodtimers' enjoyed a delicious Italian luncheon on Thursday, June 16, as we met at Pasta
Bella Restaurant in Austell. We
were small in number, but the
food was good and the fellowship was sweet!
We are looking forward to our
next gathering on July 21, when
we will have a covered dish

MACLAND CELEBRATES
50 YEARS OF MINISTRY

The apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, a young man striving to lead
a church with many older members. Paul knew that they might
at times criticize and intimidate
him. Thus he wrote: (I Timothy
4:12) Let no one despise your
youth, but be an example to the
believers in word, in conduct, in
love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
In 1977, a young man, 26 years of
age, was called to the ministry
here at Macland. Pastor Johnny
Foster, and his wife, Judy, served
the Lord here from 1977-1978.
He and his wife began their family here as well, giving birth to
two sons. Brother Johnny still resides in Marietta and pastors East
Cobb Baptist Church.
Macland Baptist Church has been
known from the very inception as
a Southern Gospel singing
church. In fact, one of the main
criteria assigned to the Pastor
search committee in 1977 was to
affirm that the persons they were
considering were familiar with
this type singing. They must also
agree that the primary hymns of
the worship service come from
the Red Back Church Hymnal.
Though some may have questioned the age of Pastor Johnny,
no one questioned his music preference. He was Southern Gospel
from the tip of his head to the
point of his cowboy boots. He
was an accomplished pianist, who
wrote gospel music, and he and
Judy’s duets were in high demand
throughout the South.

Brother Perry Queen told a story
about helping move the Pastor and
his wife to a home in our area. He
would always end it by saying if
he ever had to help move them
again, he would be sure that he
wasn’t the person who had to load
the record albums. They were all
Southern Gospel, and suspected of
encompassing every recording
from the very first to the most current album of every Gospel group
or artist.
Under Brother Johnny’s leadership
2 more acres were purchased from
Mr. Wilkins and an education
building was completed in 1978.
Charles Collins, football coach at
McEachern High School, was our
first Youth Minister in a part time
capacity. He served from 1981
until he was called into full time
ministry with Campus Crusade For
Christ in 1983. Reverend Joe Durham became our first full time
Youth Minister when Coach
Collins resigned.
Although an education building
had been added, a new sanctuary
was rapidly becoming a necessity,
and a long range planning committee was elected in 1985 to begin
working toward that goal. The
church budget increased from
$45,600 in 1977 to $272,000 in
1988 when Brother Johnny resigned.
The beloved Mr. “Slim” Bundrum,
(mentioned in June issue of the
Maclander) passed away in 1988.
He and Miss Ruby’s desire was to
give their home to the Church
upon their death. Since Miss Ruby
could no longer live alone, she

she donated their home before
her death. It was sold in 1989 for
$24,425. Miss Ruby died in 2003
at the age of 92.

Macland Baptist Church is a family oriented, Bible believing, Bible
preaching Southern Baptist Church. We are traditional in worship
style. We offer a morning worship service at 10:30 am on Sundays,
Sunday and Wednesday evening services, and strong Sunday
School and AWANA programs. We also provide GA’s, Mission
Friends, Teamkid, and WMU to help provide missions education
and training for our children. We have weekday and weeknight ladies Bible studies and a growing number of specialized classes for
adults on Wednesday evenings in addition to our prayer service.
We offer a special midweek student worship and Bible study. We
have an active children’s program and age graded nurseries. Our
goal in providing these programs and opportunities is to train and
equip the body of Christ to do the work of the ministry and to reach
a lost world for Christ.
Our music is a mix of traditional hymns, Southern Gospel favorites, and contemporary specials. The preaching is from the New
King James Bible in expository style. We are evangelistic in our
approach and are missions minded.
