The Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a devotion begun by the Redemptorists (Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer), a group of religious founded by St. Alphonsus Ligouri. The devotion is spread throughout the world as a response to Blessed Pope Pius IX’s command to them: “Go and make her known to the world”. The devotion is 150 years old. Based from history told by the Redemptorists, the icon has a long history before they took over and spread devotion to her. More or less, the icon is 400 years old. It was said that the icon was housed for many years in the old Church of St. Matthew on Via Merulana, now the Mother House of the Redemptorists. When the old Church was destroyed during the war, the icon was moved to a new home and was taken care of Augustinian monks. It has been said that the icon was lost. When found, Blessed Pope Pius IX ordered for the icon’s rehabilitation. From then on, the Our Lady of Perpetual Help icon continued to journey with millions of pilgrims and devotees who implore her intercession and seek the help of Jesus. Our parish is named after her. I am glad that after many years of being St. Mary, the name Our Lady of Perpetual Help is being used to refer to our parish. That gives us a sense of identity and provides a solid ground to build our community on. Being the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, I see the need to promote the devotion proper to the icon. Know that it is not by mistake or by chance that we are given the icon of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help as our patroness. I believe she is given to us for a purpose. One thing that I am strong about this is that I have experienced many answered prayers through the intercession of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help. We all need help. We need Mary’s intercession just as she did in Cana. Every Wednesday beginning the week of July 1, the chapel will be open during the day. I encourage you to come and visit the icon and pray before her. The devotional prayer is to be provided and is available in English and Spanish. Confession is available too. Public recitation of the devotion will precede the 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM Masses. Believe me miracles happen! Reverend Patrick Walsh Father Pat Walsh served as St. Mary’s seventh pastor . Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles and Martyrs - June 29 "When I stand up to talk, people listen to me; they will follow what I have to say. Is it any power of mine? Of course not. St Paul says, 'What have you that you have not received and you who have received, why do you glory as if you had not?' But the secret of my power is that I have never in fifty-five years missed spending an hour in the presence of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. That's where the power comes from. That's where sermons are born. That's where every good thought is conceived." (Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen). Please join us for Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament starting after the 8:30 mass Thursday a.m. and going until after the recitation of the rosary on Friday. Everyone is welcome. Spend as much or as little time as you can. Contact Jackie at 917-0458 or Caroline at 924-9952 evenings to sign up as an adorer, or at the office. Thank You for offering our Lord this special hour. Expect God's blessing, and give Him thanks. www.stmarysalbany.com or contact Fr. Aniceto Guiriba, Administrator at 541-926-1449 or aguiriba@archdpdx.org. Peter’s Pence Collection This week our diocese is taking up the Peter’s Pence Collection, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Join our Holy Father as a witness of charity to those who are suffering. Celebrating 130 Years of Catholic Faith, Family and Service 1885—2015 June 28, 2015 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time THE LORD OF LIFE At this bountiful time of year, our Sunday readings teem with life and abundance. Both the first reading, from the book of Wisdom, and the Gospel passage from Mark assure us that God did not make death or even will us to be ill. Illness and death entered the world through the presence of evil, the Wisdom author tells us. Mark’s stories of Jesus healing a hemorrhaging woman and resuscitating a dead little girl make it clear that Jesus is from God. As the Son of God he does not will that anyone suffer illness or death. In the face of such power, the second reading, from Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians, provides a stark contrast. Jesus, who could raise the dead to new life, “though he was rich, for your sake he became poor” (2 Corinthians 8:9). Our gift of new life from Christ demands our response in charity. home to church and the shift from the bride’s father to the priest’s authority helped to protect the freedom of brides who weren’t quite as confident as the Wife of Bath. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — God did not make death, nor does God rejoice in the destruction of the living (Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24). Psalm — I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me (Psalm 30). Second Reading — Your abundance should supply the needs of the others (2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13-15). Gospel — Your faith has saved you (Mark 5:21-43 [21-24, 35b-43]). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The premier poet of the English language, Geoffrey Chaucer, introduced one of his most beloved characters, the “Wife of Bath,” by this telling remark: “Husbands at church door she had five.” Four times widowed, she was setting off on a pilgrimage, notably without number five. The church door is a curious detail, pointing to the fourteenth-century wedding custom of marrying on the porch of the parish church. The goal was to give maximum publicity to the consent of the groom and bride, and so consent was moved from the bride’s home to a public venue. The priest would stand in the doorway and begin by sprinkling the couple with holy water. He needed to make sure they weren’t too closely related and give them some instruction. He would direct the groom to pay the bride’s family a dowry, and then announce the monetary amounts to the interested passersby. Only then would the guests enter the church for the wedding Mass, during which the bride and groom would hold lighted candles. (Marcos 5:21-43 [5:21-24, 35b-43]).
