15th WATER INFORMATION SUMMIT
15th WATER INFORMATION SUMMIT
Water Information for Sustainable Water Resources Management
July, 2014
1) WIS-15
The Water Information Summit (WIS) is an event promoted by WaterWeb Consortium, a
global community, bringing together educational, governmental, nonprofit & commercial
entities interested in water research, conservation, and management, linked electronically
by the Internet. The 15th edition of WIS, that has been accomplished in USA, Panama,
Netherlands, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Chile, The Dominican Republic and Burkina
Faso, was conducted in partnership with Hydroinformatics International Center, in Itaipu
Technological Park, Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, and the theme was the exchange of information
and technologies for water resources sustainable management, enabling the access and
dissemination of knowledge through the web.
Besides WaterWeb Consortium and Hydroinformatics International Center, the WIS-15
was sponsored s sponsored by USAID-Global Water for Sustainability Program at Florida
International University, International Hydrological Programme of UNESCO, ITAIPU
Binacional and Itaipu Technological Park Foundation, and also host the Summer Course in
International Erasmus Mundus - MSc in Ecohydrology, organized by the National
University of La Plata (Argentina) and the Federal University of Espirito Santo (Brazil).
2) Programme
Six technical sessions were held, discussing the following topics: Water-Energy Nexus for
Sustainable Water Resources Management, FOSS4GIS applied to Water Resources
Management, Hydrological Modeling for the prevention of natural disasters, Ecohydrology,
Technical inovations for Water Resources Management and International cooperation to
solve water conflicts. The program included the participation of experts from South
America, North America, Central America and the Caribbean.
The WIS-15 also featured a parallel programming: Programme A - Short course: GIS (with
Free Open Source) for Water Resources Management through the use of Geographic
Information System and publication of data on the Internet; and Programme B – Field Visit:
Agri-Energy Cooperative for Family Farming “Ajuricaba”, a field trip in an Itaipu experience
in Renewable Energy area.
Day 1 – 07/28
Day 2 – 07/29
Programme A – Short Course: GIS for Water Resources
Management
Day 3 – 07/30
Programme B – Field Trip: Agri-Energy Cooperative
for Family Farming “Ajuricaba”
3) Audience
Intended for policy makers, technicals, researchers, students and the community in
general, the 15th Water Information Summit brought together 149 participants, from more
than 20 countries. An important detail was the participation of students from Masters in
Ecohydrology Summer School of the Erasmus Mundus Programme, with representatives
from several countries. The event featured simultaneous Portuguese/English translation
(official languages of WIS-15) so that all participants could completely assimilate the
content of the presentations.
Moreover, one of WIS-15 Sessions (Session 2 – FOSS4GIS applied to Water Resources
Management) was broadcast online via Mundo GEO, one of the most respected websites
in the area of GIS in Latin America. The webcast was attended by 470 people from
Universities, Government Agencies, Private Companies and Research Institutions .
