a h t i w Partuyrpose! P March 2016 Phebruary’s PHAT TUESDAY Phlocking To o sa say o ourr last meeting was as a little odd would be an understatement. The lights were on one minute and off the next, making it difficult to read Cathy & Clay the raffle tickets or to even see the prize you just won. Our President was making her announcements and the music was turned on drowning her out. Only one Jimmy Buffet song was played during the whole evening and it was cut off half way through. March Phlocking March 8th 7:00 pm Somewhere Bar Bud Light & Miller Lite draft $3 each. Johnny Rockets menus & servers available to take food orders. Plus! ---LIVE MUSIC!! --- by Rick Lamb and the Phin Addicts You may think this was due to a Fat Tuesday prank/ritual or perhaps it was due to the rumored Legionnaires’ Post One Ghost, but you would be wrong. Oh, by the way, did you happen to meet Clay? Margaritaville Night at the Tulsa Oilers Saturday March 19th The Pot Luck was a success as usual with plenty of Gumbo and Cajun delights as well as several (many, lots) King Cakes. Kathy Detwiler was the first to find the “King” in the cake “so be sure to bring the King Cake next year Kathy.” Tickets are $13 per person (regularly $20). $3 of that will go directly to the Make-A-Wish foundation of Oklahoma. The game starts at 7:05pm – Tulsa Oilers vs Allen American at the BOK Center. CLICK on the link below to purchase tickets - you cannot purchase tickets through the club. We WILL NOT be taking money for tickets. We were assured there would not be a repeat of the February problems at our April meeting. http://tulsaoilers.com/tulsa-parrot-head-club/ above:The King Judy, Kathy & Cindy Last year our very own Jeanette North won the Costume Contest - so dress up in your best Tropical attire and get out to the Hockey Game. It’s always a great time! The Tulsa Parrot Head Club Presents to benefit the Akdar Shrine of Tulsa April 2, 2016 - 7:30pm Akdar Shrine Hall - 2808 S Sheridan Rd. $ 20 per person Enjoy: Cash Bar Light Snacks Costume Contest - Games Mask/Costumes Encouraged with Special musical guest: The Phin Addicts 2 You Y ou may be asking yoursel yourself lf o orr o others thers for th that hat fact ““..what wha at exactly is a ‘Masquerade Party’?” Well, besides the obvious answer, it’s a reason to dress up, raise some money and a drink or two. In other words it’s a chance to have a Phun evening with your Phellow Parrot Heads and anyone else who might show up. It’s an opportunity to see and hear our good Phriend Rick Lamb and the Phin Addicts playing live music. This is our first Masquerade Party so let’s pull out all the stops and make it a great one. Dress up, go all out, rent or make a costume. At least wear a mask (and we’re not talking about the dust kind). Don’t be the only person at the party without a costume - you really don’t want to win that prize. your face here You know that, this being a Parrot Head event, it’s going to be a great time. Plus the money raised goes to our local Shriners. So come out to the Akdar Shrine’s Hall (you know you’ve always wondered what the inside of that building looks like) April 2nd at 7:30 and join us! 21st Annual TPHC Phlocking at the Phort golf tournament - June 18th Cathy Boley will be getting out the 1st round of emails to past golfers with tournament information in the next few weeks. She will also start contacting sponsors that have contributed before to see if they will again this year. We need everyone to pitch in and help get golfers, prizes, beer, and hole sponsors this year. And remember to keep track of the time you spend getting donations, as you can earn one point per each volunteer hour. They can add up fast . NOTICE! We are also looking for someone to sponsor the lunch this year. John Hedge has another event that day and won’t be able to cook. If anyone has a contact that might consider donating lunch for 150 people, please let Cathy know. It would be a tax deductible donation for them. As all donations you get for the tournament are tax deductible. Our illustrious President has put a challenge out to all Tulsa Parrot Heads to wrangle up at least one (1) hole sponsor, and a couple of prizes and/or beer. Come on Pholks, let’s not let Cathy down. Get out there and get those donations. Make her proud! 3 Tulsa Chill Motorcycle, Car and Custom Semi-Truck Show April 29th – May 1st “The Chill” / Kansas and Oklahoma’s largest indoor Motorcycle, Car and Custom Semi-Truck Shows! It is our pleasure to present to you the all new “Chill” event series for 2016. “The Chill” is heading to Tulsa, Oklahoma for its 1st annual event April 29th – May 1st of 2016 and will be held at the River Spirit Expo located at 4145 East 21st, Tulsa, OK. We truly believe that the Oklahoma Motorcycle, Car and Custom Semi-Truck enthusiasts will love “The Chill” as much as we do! Girls? Did we mention Girls??? Trust us on this one… “The Chill” is very well known for its swimsuit competitions, fashion shows and/or performances with some of the hottest girls around. Past events have included the T95 Rock Squad Girls, Hooters Swimsuit Competitions as well as the world famous Flaunt Girls!!!! FUN for the whole Family!! The Tulsa Parrot Heads have agreed to ‘work’ the Tulsa Chill Show so we are looking for volunteers to help out. What we will need from the Parrot Heads is more of a security issue. Meaning we will need someone working during the event to walk the event and to ensure that no one is messing with other people’s stuff so to speak. It’s more of a keeping an eye on people. We will probably only need two to four at any given time to keep an eye on things. You can schedule people to be there in whatever shifts you want. We will get paid $8 an hour, and they will give us one check for the total time at the end of the show. We can designate what charity we want the money to go to. We will sign up people for 2 hour shifts and will need 2-4 people on each shift. The hours of the car show are Fri April 29 12pm to 10pm. Sat 10am to 10pm, and Sun 10am-4pm. After your shift you are welcome to walk around the show if you want. This is not hard, and anyone can do it. Even if you are an old crip like your president. This is a great opportunity to increase your ‘Volunteer Points’ - remember Fall 2016 is just around the corner and you wouldn’t want to miss Margaritaville’s Grand Opening would you? 4 36 Hours of Parrot Head Phun! - or - The Tulsa Parot Heads take a train trip to Ft Worth, Texas! All Awake! top: OKC at dawn right: Ft. Worth Stockyards at all the shuttles arrived and in two quick trips we all made it to the hotel. After checking in most everyone was a little hungry so we walked across the street to the ‘Mercado For most of us, the trip to the ‘Ft Worth Stockyards’ started in the early ‘am’ Saturday morning as we headed south to OKC to catch Amtrak’s ‘Heartland Flyer’. Some Parrot Head’s opted to stay the night in OKC so they would be (supposedly) bright and chipper first thing in the morning - oh well. 34 Tulsa Parrot Heads departed the OKC Train Depot/bomb shelter (the interior of their waiting room was a little abysmal)at 8:23am on the dot. Juarez Cafe’ for some authentic Mexican food. After lunch some folks went back to the hotel to freshen up and others headed straight down to the ‘Stockyard’ district. The ‘Ft. Worth Stockyard’ district is basically just bars and gift shops with a few restaurants thrown in for good measure which, as you well know, is paradise for Longhorn Saloon Parrot Heads! After arriving on the main street it seemed as though the men headed for the bars and the ladies took to the stores. We tried our best to hit every bar but I’m sure a few were missed. Then there was OKC Depot waiting room We were off ! Rocketing our way to the Ft Worth Stockyards! But first we had to make a few stops (Norman, Purcell and a few others) and listen to a few announcements concerning shoes and toes (?)and our general safety. But we were too busy playing ‘I pad “What time is it?” Charades’, ‘Go Fish’ and drinking to let any of that affect us. The interior of the train was very comfortable and spacious - nothing at all like the Hogwart’s train. And we had our own section too - almost the whole car. Towards the end of the trip the ‘Club Car’ started running low on beer - but we persevered. “Stampede” the ‘Longhorn Stampede!!’ down main street - which was actually more of a ‘shuffle’ than a stampede - but entertaining none the less. This was on the trip down to Ft. Worth Next Stop - Ft Worth, Texas! We arrived in Ft Worth right on time. Now the trick was getting from the depot to our hotel. In no time continued on pg. 7 5 TPHC off to the next bar! e r ’ y e Th ! ! k c a B We raised $251 in the February raffle. The donation went to the Owasso Grads Special Olympics. Owasso’s Special Olym- That’s right! The COPA Reefers Band will be back at the 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar March 4th. pics team and Special Olympics of Oklahoma provides the opportunity for athletes of all ability levels to compete in fair and equitable competition. Every year Owasso Public Schools sends approximately 80 athletes and Unified partners to participate in the Area and State Games. They were here a couple of months ago for a weekend show and then they came back just to play at our January meeting. They are a really good and Phun band. Get out to see them if you get a chance. You’ll be glad you did. The February raffle was very well distributed if I do say so myself. There were one or two tables that were luckier than others - but that’s to be expected. In this case I was sitting at one of the lucky ones for once. The TPHC Shirt and Dress ordering period has been extended to our next meeting March 8th. You can see a sample of the shirt and dress and order at the meeting. One of the most famous parades in Galveston is the Uptown Funky Umbrella Parade. It is held in the Strand. Carol and I and our friends Ed and Alice have participated in this revelry the past two years while doing our best to escape the winter temperatures of northeast Oklahoma. There are plenty of beads and other things you associate with Mardi Gras, but for the most part, the celebrations are family-friendly. If you poll a hundred people regarding the origin of Mardi Gras, ninety of them probably would say that Mardi Gras began in New Orleans. The first U.S. Mardi Gras celebration was actually in Mobile in 1699. The first Mardi Gras parade was held there in 1837. Depending on who you ask, New Orleans still has the most famous celebrations, followed by Mobile with Galveston following close behind. Galveston and the surrounding area is well known for its cuisine with your choice of chain restaurants and “hole-in-wall joints.” There are plenty of dive bars as you would guess, the perfect place for a Parrot Head vacation. Galveston began its formal celebrations in 1867, complete with gala balls and lavish parades. Today the parades alternate between The Strand, Galveston’s equivalent to the French Quarter, and the Seawall. The Seawall ...continued from pg. 5 The White Elephant Bar Thirsty Armadillo Bar - Chicken Shit Bingo - Stacy wins! After dark everyone’s attention turned to food, so we all split up and headed for different restaurants/steak houses and filled our bellies. Lastly, we all somehow found our way back to the hotel - but don’t ask how. to a traffic jam) at a road side Braums ice cream for a rest, a shake and a cone. Next and last stop was the OKC depot and then the drive back to Tulsa. All in all we had a wonderful time. I would do it again in a second. Hopefully this will become a regular thing for the Tulsa Parrot Heads hint, hint. Next morning we jumped (so to speak) on the bus and headed The Basement Bar home. The bus wasn’t as lively as the train but that’s to be expected. We stopped for lunch at a restaurant called ‘Babe’s’ in Sanger, Tx. for some of the best chicken you ever ‘et’. After lunch and on our way again the bus made an unexpected stop (due 7 February Phlocking clockwise: Don & Carol all decked out!, Food rush!, Yummy food!, Pretty good turn out, Plenty of delectables to go around, Tulsa Parrot Heads just generally enjoying themselves as they tend to do.
