CONNECTION FEBRUARY 2015 PAGE Bishop Kelley is proud to be hosting a "Play for Chase" heart screening February 25, 2015 in the Small Gym. The screening will be held all day from 9:00am-4:00pm. All students, ages 14-24, are encouraged to participate in the screening, with an emphasis on all student athletes. They were finalists for the Design Award and the Innovate Award. They won the Think Award, were finalists in the robot competition, and won the Inspire Award. The Inspire Award is the highest award given at the competition (for performance in all categories). www.bkelleyiconnect.org CONNECTION FEBRUARY 2015 PAGE 5 Bishop Kelley welcomed Brother Larry Schatz, FSC, Visitor of the Midwest District of the Christian Brothers on January 26. Brother Larry visited with Fr. O'Brien and spent time with our Campus Ministry Department as well as, with Brother Chris and Brother Richard. A Music Fest and a foodie feast is in store at Kelley Palooza, the 35th Annual Bishop Kelley Auction. Enjoy food trucks, live music including the Bishop Kelley Jazz Choir, a Live and Silent Auction and a sit-down dinner in the gala tent. Emily is a threeyear member of All-State! Fr. O'Brien, Mr. Oberste, and Theology teacher, Tim Wymore, lead a group to the annual March for Life in Washington, DC this past month. The students had a great time and loved seeing all the sights! The Tulsa World sports staff has named candidates for Mr. and Ms. Outside and Mr. and Ms. Inside and now, they want fans to vote. He has been in both Honors Spanish and and Honors math. Daniel is a member of St. Bernard’s youth group. Outside of school, he enjoys playing soccer with his friends. He also has a part-time job at Hideaway Pizza. His favorite thing about Bishop Kelley is, “the amazing teachers.” Upon graduation, Daniel plans to attend the University of Arkansas. He wants to become a mechanical engineer and someday, work in the automobile industry. Kaitlyn Edmondson is a member of the BK Cr oss Countr y and Soccer teams. She also participates in Student Council, Link Crew, Senior Class Board, Intramural Sports and serves as a Comet Ambassador. Kaitlyn is also in the National Honor Society. Currently, she is taking AP environmental science and AP literature. Kaitlyn attends Quest at Christ the King, and is a parishioner at St. Benedict’s. Outside of school, she loves to play soccer and run. “I just love Bishop Kelley because of the atmosphere and the teachers are nice, awesome people,” said Kaitlyn. She would like to attend either Oklahoma State University or the University of Arkansas, and wants to work with animals for a living. CONNECTION FEBRUARY 2015 PAGE 13 Ethan Haydock is a member of Link Cr ew, National Honor Society, Kelley Crazies, Student Council, and CORE. He has attended Search 74, 76, 77, and 79. Ethan is also a Eucharistic Minister. His current classes include AP statistics, AP physics, Honors calculus, and pre-AP world history. Ethan is a member of St. Bernard’s youth group. He participates in Quest and has attended mission trips all four years of high school. Volunteering at Catholic Charities is also one of his favorite service opportunities. A co-captain of the BK Tennis team, Ethan enjoys teaching tennis lessons in the summer. His favorite thing about Kelley is the Student Section, retreats and his friends. Ethan plans to major in business or industrial engineering. He hopes to attend college at either North Carolina State, Purdue or the University of Oklahoma. Renee Franchi is a member of the BK Tr ack and Field, Volleyball, and Cr oss Country teams. She is also a trainer for the Lacrosse team. Renee is also a member of Student Council, Link Crew and the Senior Class Board. As a member of Christ the King youth group, she has attended several mission trips. She participated in Search 75 and was a worker at Search 79. Outside of school, Renee has an internship at Sky Fitness, works as a sales associate at Dolce Vita, and lifeguards at Southern Hills Country Club during the summers. “I love Bishop Kelley because it is a safe environment and I have made many friends here,” says Renee. “I also like all the activities that are offered here at Kelley.” Renee plans to attend the University of Oklahoma, majoring in criminology, with a minor in business. CONNECTION FEBRUARY 2015 PAGE Amy Junger began working at Bishop Kelley in 2007. She has been a leader in enhancing the BK Fine Arts Department, which has included her growing the number of students in her Choir program and showing successes in her students' performances at OSSAA and Music Association competitions. Her leadership has also included her assisting in incorporating String Ensemble into the Fine Arts curriculum, adding a Theater Tech position to further provide for student performances along with implementing funding to enhance the STC Auditorium. Michael Blazek began at Bishop Kelley August 2005. This is his tenth year at BK. This year he teaches Comp IIB; Lit IIA; Comp Practicum – Digital Media. Complementing his role as an English Teacher, Michael has grown BKTV (bishopkelleycomets.tv) from a Digital Media Club, to a class which puts together a production team that helps teach students producing, editing and other broadcasting skills. Additionally, Michael has played a significant role in helping enhance the school’s "Tech Team" helping teachers in adopting the new laptops and related software programs into their day to day teaching. 14 Colin Manning started at Bishop Kelley in August 2007. This is his eighth year at BK. He is a 1994 Grad from Bishop Kelley. This year he teaches: World History; Business & Personal Law; Trial Procedure; Scholar Capstone Project; and in the summer teaches BK Summer school in Oklahoma History and Government, State and Local. Mary Jo started at Bishop Kelley August 2007. This is her eighth year at BK. This year she teaches Physics I; AP Physics 1; AP Physics 2; AP Physics C, Mechanics. Robotics Club. Her children are Emily, who graduated from Bishop Kelley in 2014; current Junior, Zac; and Connor, a seventh grader at St. Pius. Mary Jo has been instrumental in starting the BK Robotics team, expanding the Robotics team - increasing the number of participants. Specifically this year, she helped secure a gift, which allows the BK Robotics Team to branch out and assist other Catholic schools to start their own Robotics programs. CONNECTION FEBRUARY 2015 PAGE 15 ► THANK YOU to everyone who has supported our annual fund, Believe in Kelley. To date, we have received gifts totaling $237,074, which is just under 60% of our goal of $400,000. In addition to tuition assistance, this year’s Believe in Kelley drive will also fund campus improvements. Believe in Kelley will fund the following campus improvements: New sidewalks and drainage for existing sidewalks that will improve safety for our students, especially for students being dropped off or picked up in the senior/faculty/staff parking lot New landscaping and irrigation New and expanded areas for outdoor seating and lighting New security camera system across campus, both indoor and outdoor cameras If you are interested in donating to Believe in Kelley, visit www.BishopKelley.org/Give.
