PASTOR’S COLUMN
Dear Friends in Christ,
This Sunday would have been my parents’ 51st wedding anniversary. On
their 30 anniversary I celebrated a Mass in their Dunedin home wherein they
renewed their vows. It was evident at that me that my father’s journey to his
heavenly home was fast approaching. He died nine days later at the young age
of 56. I can remember how long his illness was and how he so wanted everything to be in place before he passed away. While it was certainly a challenge,
his passing was a me of grace for our family. His suffering was finally over and
he was certainly prepared to depart this world. Nevertheless, many people
a ending the funeral mass expressed how sorry they were for our loss and how
they regre ed not really ge ng a chance to say good-by to my father. It wasn’t
un l much later that I realized that dad was a bit of a celebrity in our community. As the Grand Knight and an extrovert who always managed a high profile
volunteer posi on in town, he made contacts with people that were a mystery
to me and my mom and sister.
th
Last month when Barbara Caccamisi passed away a er her long bought
with cancer it was no shock to me or her family. In fact, one might say it was an
answer to a prayer because her suffering was finally over. The community came
together for a beau ful mass to remember Barbara on August 23rd the Feast of
St. Rose of Lima. Everyone who came together for that celebra on shared in
the grief of the family and recognized a tremendous loss, but also stood in faith
for a heavenly hope. Because of Barb’s intense need for privacy especially when
she was so sick, I believe that many in our community might feel sorrow, not
just because they lost Barb, but because they didn’t get the chance to shower
her with love and a en on when she was in need. Although the cloud of grief
s ll hovers, I want to assure you all that Barb knew exactly what she was doing.
Barb wanted to stay with us for future Strawberry Fes vals but knowing that it
was not to be she confided in me that Paul Hetrick would make a good successor. I was happy to ask him to take over as the coordinator of our Strawberry
Shortcake Project and he has, a er a me of discernment, agreed to accept the
posi on.
Barb came into the Church as an adult in 1987 and Paul also came into
the Catholic Church as an adult the following year in 1988. Oh how I wish all of
our converts became so involved in the parish. This weekend we begin the Faith
Forma on “academic year” and I am thrilled to have a vibrant program with
dedicated volunteers. This year beginning next month, October 11th to be exact,
we celebrate a special year of Faith, commemora ng the 50th Anniversary of the
Convening of the Second Va can Council. This should be a good year to re-visit
the richness of the Va can II documents. The conclusion of the Year of Faith will
be on the Feast of Christ the King in 2013. Speaking of dedicated volunteers,
please do not forget to visit the booths at the ministries fair next weekend following all of the liturgies.
Peace in Christ,
Welcome Home!

Pearls for Wise Living
A new study will start this

James is one of the most prac cal books of the Bible.
Like the book of Proverbs, it is a book of wisdom, a
collec on of teachings on issues faced by ordinary
Chris ans in everyday life. These teachings speak
loudly to all those who feel torn between the compe ng demands of this world and their faith. This
study offers "pearls for wise living" by applying the
wisdom of James to the present day. For anyone who
has struggled to live a truly Chris an life, James offers
a wealth of prac cal solu ons for handling and even
sanc fying everyday circumstances.
