HILLSBORO INLET SAILING CLUB
November 2014
From
The

By Frank Tippett
Commodore
Condor
"Sailing a boat calls for quick action, a blending of feeling with the wind and water as well
as with the very heart and soul of the boat itself.
Sailing teaches alertness and courage, and
gives in return a joyousness and peace that but
few sports afford."
George Matthew Adams
OMG! It's the middle of October already. Again,
time flies when you're having fun. The fun
events started with the Castaways Cup on September 20 and 21.
Then the Sailing Social hosted by Karyn and
Alan Katz on Ciboney was on the 27th. It was
very well attended. Nine boats came out for the
sail.

firsts; Commotion, Unicorn and Third Tri; and
three seconds; Grand Cru, Magic and Sempre
Amantes. On top of that the three first place winners also won three of the Perpetual Trophies;

With the best weather we've had in a long time,
the Oktoberfest Cruise took place in Lake Boca.
Hosted by Esprit du Vent and Bella, there were
fifteen boats in attendance. Of course no beer
was consumed and no fun was had by anybody.
Thanks to Christeen, Franko, Diane and Paul for
their efforts.
Coming up in the rest of October and November
are the last four Founders races, the Mary Wells
Challenge and the Thanksgiving Cruise. What!
That can't be. That means the Holiday Dinner
Dance is just seven weeks away. Wow!
Congratulations to Cheryl Jalbert for being unanimously elected as an Honorary Member. She
has been a member since 1971 and is one of
three original Charter Members. The other two
are Betty Nederlanden and Mary Wells. Cheryl’s
honor was way over due.
Club Credo

Oh, by the way; a moose, a lynx and a beaver
walk into a bar. The bartender looks up and says:
"What is this, some kind of joke?”

HISC 2015 Nominations
As everyone knows, proposing members for the
Board is a very serious task. After many hours
and much head scratching your nominating committee has come up with this slate for the next
sailing year. The Club needs new members and
more active members. It is our belief that the
future of our club will be in safe hands if the
proposed Board for 2015/16 is accepted.

Dave Maraj was raised in Trinidad where he developed his love for the sea. He now lives in Highland
beach. Dave has 5 adult children, ages 28 – 36. He
has been the owner of Champion Motors for 28
years, and during that time was actively involved
with the Porsche and Audi race teams. He owns the
J30 Paparazzi, which has raced against club boats in
the Palm Beach Race and the Columbus Day Regatta. Dave has bought an Oyster 575, 24 Heures, that
he plans to race and cruise extensively. His sponsors
are Robert Schuldenfrei and Ken Scott. The Board
member who did the interview was Rear Commodore Larry Geller.
The sister cites of Lighthouse Point, Hillsboro
Beach, and Deerfield Beach are working together to
promote the 52nd Pompano Beach Annual Holiday
Beach Parade.
David & Michelle Hochstadter have joined the
HISC. They live in Ft. Lauderdale now, although
originally from South Africa. David is a teacher of
graphic design at FAU. He has sailed internationally
and is very interested in racing. Their sponsors are
Danny Escobar and Dennis Tynan. The Board member who did the interview was Commodore Frank
Tippett.
Aboard the “lead” boat you will be in the center of
all the Holiday magic (See the flier on page 9 for
complete Holiday Parade information.) It’ll be a
“blast.”
HISC is sponsoring a raffle for two reservation tickets for the lead boat in the parade, Musette. This
$120.00 value includes a buffet dinner and an open
bar! DJ entertainment will also be provided.
Musette will cast off from Two Georges Restaurant
and Marina in Deerfield Beach on Sunday, December 14th

Racing
By Larry Geller
Third Tri
Our fall racing series has been blessed with great
weather so far, with the fleet enjoying chamber
of commerce conditions for the first 6 buoy races. This has given us the opportunity to run
some longer races and some different courses,
which has kept the racing fun for all!
Our golf style rating system, which adjusts the
handicaps for each boat depending on where
they finish each race, is doing a great job of
making the racing competitive for the wide variety of boats that we have out on the water. In
the 6 races we have run so far, there have been at
least four different boats to take a first place in
the ARC fleet!
This past weekend was the Columbus Day Regatta, and HISC was well represented in the
fleet. We were once again treated to amazing
conditions! With flat water, 8- 15 knots of wind
and courses up to 18 miles long, everyone enjoyed a great weekend of sailing.
One of the cool features of the Columbus Day
Regatta is the first day awards given at the party
on Saturday night. These are yellow flags (like
the yellow jerseys work in the tour de France)
that the winner of each division flies on Sunday,
letting everyone else know who they need to
beat! This year saw five HISC boats with these
flags – Unicorn, Sempre, Commotion, Third Tri
and Magic. The final results have not yet been
posted, but I am sure that our fleet will be taking
home lots of trophies again this year.
We have a big ocean right in our backyards, and
many able bodied sailors who are anxious to
help crew, so please come out and join us for
some racing.

Sailing
Social
2014
By Alan Katz
Ciboney
It was a perfect September day for the 2014
HISC Sailing Social event. The sun was shining,
the seas were mild and the wind was blowing at a
steady 14 knots out of the east.
At 3:00 PM, Ciboney was joined by Kokomo,
Shoal Mate, Bleu Belle, Magic, Anyi, Pegasus,
Adelante and Charity at the “HI” buoy. We all
enjoyed fast and comfortable reaches in northerly
and southerly directions.
While the conditions were perfect for everyone,
they were extra perfect for the catamarans. We
had the opportunity to chase Adelante and Kokomo up and down the coast.
We had four, first time boats participate in this
year’s Sailing Social. It is great to see new members and new boats show up for the event.
We hope to meet you all at the “HI” buoy next
year.
