SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 17, 2016 1st Reading: Genesis 18:1-10a 1st Reading: Colossians 1:24-28 1st Reading: Luke 10:38-42 25th Anniversary Celebration of the Foundation of Holy Apostles Parish Mass of Thanksgiving Sunday, July 24, 2016 at 11:00 AM FROM THE PASTOR Next weekend Holy Apostles Church will reach a great milestone as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the parish. Established on July 25, 1991, the Feast of St. James, the Apostle, Holy Apostles began with about 300 families gathering for Sunday Mass at Alpine Country Club. That same month, Bishop Gelineau joined the first members to bless a field on the corner of Scituate Avenue and Pippin Orchard Road that would become the future home of the new parish. Soon, the growing parish community moved into warehouse space on Plainfield Pike. Many founding members of the parish speak fondly and tell many stories of the “warehouse years”. Remarkably, on just the third anniversary of the parish, our beautiful church was completed and dedicated. Within ten years the parish Community Life Center and gym were dedicated to accommodate religious education, youth ministry and many other programs and parish activities for people of all ages. It is a remarkable story of growth and accomplishment that was only possible because of the dedicated, hard-working staff members and a growing community of parishioners who were extremely generous with both their talent and their resources to make it all happen. When I came to Holy Apostles as Pastor two years ago, I told you that I looked forward to continuing to build on the great tradition and strong foundation of this parish. As time has gone by, I appreciate more and more what an extraordinary parish it is. I continue to be truly grateful for the opportunity to serve in such a pastorally and spiritually vibrant parish. Please join us for our Anniversary Mass of Thanksgiving next Sunday, July 24, at 11:00 AM. It will be a great opportunity for us to gather in prayer and gratitude to God for the many blessings of the past twenty-five years. Several priests who have been associated with the parish over the years plan to join us for the celebration. Following the Mass, all are invited to a reception in the parish gym. While you are enjoying some refreshments, you can check out photos of various events and activities from over the years…I’m sure many will enjoy going down Memory Lane and reminiscing. We also have a number of photos on the bulletin boards in the corridor leading to the Community Life Center. Take a few moments to check them out….perhaps you will find yourself or old friends in the pictures. I would also point out that there is an interesting history of the parish on our website, www.holyapostles.com. Reading it may bring back memories and for newer parishioners it is a great way to learn about the first quarter-century. As we reflect on the past, we also look forward to the future and we ask the Lord to guide and assist us as our history continues to unfold in the days and years ahead. Msgr. Theroux Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ July 17, 2016 STEWARDSHIP “Thought of the Week” Today’s readings speak of hospitality. Abraham, who cheerfully did for his guests all that desert hospitality required, was rewarded with his heart’s desire – a son. Martha also busied herself with all the details of hospitality, but grudgingly and with complaint. Am I a cheerful or a grudging giver? Time and Talent - We wish to thank all those parishioners who are always so willing to pitch in and lend a helping hand. Their participation contributes to the vibrancy of our community. Treasure – Thank you for your financial support. CATHOLIC CHARITY FUND APPEAL Holy Apostles’ Goal: $145,000.00 Amount Collected as of 7/12: $154,452.00 I am grateful to everyone who helped us to exceed our goal and provide outstanding support to people throughout Rhode Island who look to the Charity Fund for assistance. ONLINE GIVING This secure program works directly with your bank or credit card. All transactions are done electronically, debiting your bank account or charging your credit card for the amount to which you have agreed in writing. Holy Apostles is offering two debit dates~ the 4th or 15th of the month or both! You can enroll in Faith Direct or make changes to your account dates or contributions online at www.faithdirect.net or call 1-866-507-8757. Holy Apostles parish code is RI18. PARISH NECROLOGY - July Remembering our deceased loved ones is a long-standing custom in the Roman Catholic Church. In addition to offering personal and public prayers, especially the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the church also uses a Necrology. A Necrology is a listing of those who have died within a certain period of time.
