TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 4, 2016 1st Reading: Wis 9:13-18b 2nd Reading: Phlm 9-10, 12-17 FROM THE PASTOR… Gospel: Lk 14:25-33 FALL FESTIVAL INQUIRY NIGHT AND ADULT CONFIRMATION Do you know someone who might be interested in becoming a Catholic? Perhaps you have a relative or friend who has inquired about the Catholic faith and possibly has questions about what the requirements are to become a Catholic. Or maybe you know someone who was baptized a Catholic as a child, but never followed through with other sacraments and now, as an adult, is more interested in having faith as a part of their life. If you know anyone who fits this description, please tell them about the Inquiry Night being held here at Holy Apostles Church on Monday evening, October 3rd at 7:00 PM in the parish community life center. This informal gathering will provide the opportunity to ask questions and get information about becoming a Catholic. We will give a short presentation on The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), a program of classes and activities to prepare participants to be received into the Catholic Church at Easter. Our parish RCIA program is led by Deacon Greg Albanese who is an excellent teacher and guide for those preparing for reception into the Church. There are no doubt men and women in our community waiting for an invitation to join the Church. You can assist in the evangelizing mission of the Church by extending that invitation. If the person you invite is hesitant or shy about coming to the meeting alone, feel free to join them and support them in the inquiry. Assure them that there are no obligations, just useful information. In a similar vein, if you are an adult who was raised Catholic but never received the sacrament of Confirmation and would now like to be Confirmed, please express your interest to Deacon Albanese or to me. In the next few weeks as we organize the RCIA program we will also be making provision for a program of preparation for adult Confirmation. It’s never too late to seek Confirmation and it can be a great opportunity to renew and strengthen your faith and participation in the Church. The Rhode Island Knights of Columbus is inviting all people of good will to join us for a Prayer for Peace, Sunday, September 11th at St Augustine’s Church, 639 Mount Pleasant Avenue, Providence RI at 7PM. This one-hour program will bring together members of religious and minority communities, the military, law enforcement and first responders to pray for an end of the unrest and loss of life in our neighborhoods and around the world. Please join us as we observe this tragic day in America’s history to pray that love for one another will always defeat hatred, and make our world a better place. Go to http://www. kofcri.org for more details. Sr. Priest Retirement Fund After decades of faithful service, many retired priests continue to serve where they are needed, while others require assisted living, or nursing home care. Since priests are paid a very modest wage, they cannot rely upon Social Security to make ends meet. No longer able to rely upon parishes for basic living needs, senior priests depend on support from this challenged fund. Your generosity will make a difference in the lives of many who have served faithfully for many years in ministry – some of whom continue to serve well after their ‘retirement.’ The collection is also our way of saying “thank you” for that service. At Masses on September 17 & 18, our parish will join others throughout the Diocese in a special second collection in support of the Senior Priest Retirement Fund. Please consider a generous donation in support of our senior priests. To learn how this fund benefits senior priests or to make an online donation, please visit www.srpriestri.org. Thank you for your support of this worthy endeavor. Please pray for the soul of: Leo F. Brennan who passed away and his funeral Mass was celebrated here at Holy Apostles. We wish to express our sympathy to his wife, Donna and children: Leo III, Diane, David, Ashley, Ryan and their families.
