PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD March 20, 2016 1st Reading: Isaiah 50:4-7 2nd Reading: Philippians 2:6-11 Gospel: Luke 22:14—23:56 THE JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY FROM THE PASTOR… On Monday of last week, a concerned parishioner spoke with me about an ad on the back of last Sunday’s parish bulletin that listed a number of State Representatives and took a strong position on a particular political issue. I want to assure you that I was not previously aware of the ad nor had I approved its publication or in any way endorsed it. The company that publishes our parish bulletin solicits and sells the ads directly and I have no input into them. However, I have informed the company as well as our local sales representative that I do not want ads of this nature in the future. While the Church must at times affirm its position on moral issues that concern public life, I don’t believe that a parish publication is the proper forum for partisan, political statements. Thank you for your understanding. Msgr. Theroux GOOD FRIDAY, March 25 LITURGY OF THE LORD’S PASSION ~ 7PM Today is the only day of the year that Mass is not celebrated. Today’s Liturgy is a service that includes the reading of the Passion, Veneration of the Cross and the reception of Holy Communion that was consecrated at the Holy Thursday Mass. Good Friday Walk-a-thon ~ 10AM This 5K Walk raises money for the children of St. Charles, Providence. Sponsor forms will be available at Religious Education class. This is a tremendous way to show our love for others on this solemn day. HOLY SATURDAY, March 26 THE EASTER VIGIL AND EASTER MASS ~ 7:30PM (please note that there is no 5pm Mass) The Easter Vigil begins in relative darkness but is soon filled with light. The lighted Easter Candle symbolizes the presence of the Risen Christ in our midst. It is, for sure, the most moving and spiritually uplifting Liturgy of the entire year. EASTER SUNDAY, March 27 EASTER MASSES are at 8:00AM, 9:30AM and 11:00AM ~ ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA!!!! HOLY THURSDAY, March 24 LITURGY OF THE LORD’S SUPPER ~ 7PM This day the church celebrates the institution of two sacraments: Holy Orders and the Eucharist. Today’s Liturgy includes the traditional “washing of feet” and a solemn procession with the Blessed Sacrament to the Holy Family Chapel. The chapel will remain open until 9:30pm for private prayer and adoration. At the offertory time special items to be shared with the poor will be brought forward by the congregation. HOMELESS KITS (please use a gallon size storage bag filled with travel size toothpaste, a toothbrush, soap, pocket size comb and tissue pack, deodorant etc.) HOUSEHOLD CLEANING SUPPLIES (a plastic bucket filled with an assortment of supplies) HYGIENE SUPPLIES (assorted family size items such as shampoo, deodorant, toilet paper, etc. please use a bag that contents can be easily seen.) There will be two collections on Easter Sunday The first will be the regular Sunday offering and the second will be the annual Easter Sunday offering. Your participation and generosity in both will be greatly appreciated. Rules on Fast and Abstinence – Good Friday is a day of fast and abstinence. Those 18-59 are required to observe the rules on fasting which means only one full meal may be eaten and there is no solid food between meals. Catholics 14 and older are also required to abstain from eating meat or meat products on Friday. Poor health can excuse one from the rules on abstinence but not the rules on fasting.
