The community selected seven men, one of whom was Stephen. Second Reading: 1 Peter 2: 4 – 9 Citing many uses of the word “stone” in the sayings of Jesus and in the Old Testament, Peter urges the Christians to be “living stones...an edifice of spirit.” Gospel: John 14: 1 – 12 In this beautiful passage from the words of Jesus at the Last Supper, Jesus promises that he is preparing a place for the apostles. He tells them, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me.” When Philip asks Jesus to show them the Father, Jesus answers, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.” ©1999 Bon Venture Services, Inc. Come join us in praying and working for Vocations to the Priesthood and the Religious Life! 10 TIPS FOR PRAYING THE FAMILY ROSARY MORE DEVOUTLY, ESPECIALLY WITH CHILDREN 1. Avoid forcing or punishing anyone to pray the rosary – let it be a privilege and pleasure. 2. When someone has to be absent for the rosary, let them know they will be missed. 3. Younger children may not be able to participate in the entire rosary because it is too long. 4. Choose a time that is convenient for most in the group, let it be known as “Rosary Time”. It does not have to be the same everyday. 5. Choose a special place that appeals to as many as possible – before a picture or statue, at an outdoor shrine, or even a bedside. 6. Vary the posture – kneeling, sitting, standing. 7. Let everyone be involved according to age and ability, from quiet attending to leadership. 8. The family rosary should reflect the loving relationship within the family – for example, a hug of peace could conclude it. 9. Make the rosary inclusive. If there are guests, invite them to share in it. 10. The rosary is a bouquet, a gift of love from your family to Jesus and Mary. http://www.familyrosary.org/ PRAY THE ROSARY EVERY DAY! + PARISH MEETINGS THIS WEEK + RCIA Adult Choir Children’s Choir May 20 7:30PM FWH-MSR May 21 7:15PM Church May 24 Noon Church A NOTE TO OUR NON-CATHOLIC FRIENDS Although we warmly welcome you to our parish Liturgies, we cannot extend to you an invitation to receive Holy Communion. The reception of Holy Communion is a sign of Unity in Faith, and such unity does not exist between Catholics and those who belong to other Christian groups. That unity is something for which we are to pray. If you would like to explore becoming a Catholic, please speak to one of the Priests. You may find the U.S. Catholic Bishops’ GUIDELINES FOR THE RECEPTION OF COMMUNION helpful. This document is found printed on the inside cover of Today’s Missal in the pews. The role of a “godparent” is to be an “other parent” in matters of our holy Faith. That is why sponsors must be practicing Catholics, 16 yrs of age or older, having received Confirmation and currently living a good Christian moral life. If the sponsor is married, that person must be in a valid Church marriage. One sponsor is required for Confirmation. It is customary to have two for Baptism, in which case one must be male and the other female. A nominated sponsor is asked to get certification from his/her current parish. This is a declaration by a priest/deacon that the individual is qualified to be a sponsor according to Church Law. To be so certified, the individual must be a current parishioner of the particular parish where the certification is being sought, and be known to the priest/deacon as being a faithful practicing Catholic, attending Mass there regularly. Unfortunately, at times, family members or friends are chosen to be sponsors with good intentions, but are found to be ineligible according to Church Law. Also, more and more, people seem to think that they are still “parishioners” of their childhood parish, where they attended school or received sacraments years ago, while no longer living in the area or attending Mass there regularly. It is important for all individuals to be active members of their local Catholic faith communities. The unfortunate fact is that some are neither practicing Catholics nor faithful members of a parish family and are thereby ineligible to become sponsors. Like all other things in life, individual choices bring consequences. Here, at Holy Rosary, Certificates of Sponsorship are given by the pastor to registered members of the parish who are practicing Catholics and who meet the above mentioned criteria. Please see the pastor after Mass on Saturday evening or Sunday to inquire about getting a certificate.
